mom2girlsVT Posted August 21, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2010 Has anyone tried the Indian Vegetarian dish offered in the dining room on the first night (I believe)? If so, looking for your thoughts on how it was. I hate to give up the ribs that are offered that night, but I'm hoping to try new things this time....and the Indian dish would definitely be new for me! Thanks! SenatorsFan Posted August 21, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2010 If you eat cheese, you'll be fine. Part of it is paneer (Indian cottage cheese), so my son wouldn't eat it. It does come in a separate dish. I've also had it and the rest of it is delicious. Heather
MiddleAgedBroad Posted August 21, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2010 Indian food is wonderfully complex, and full of spices that are good for you (like turmeric, which is a powerful anti-inflammatory that may have a protective effect against many diseases; fenugreek, which helps stabilize blood glucose levels and reduces blood cholesterol; and cumin, which is loaded with antioxidants). Once you try it, you'll never go back to bland American food that tastes of nothing but salt. (Kidding. Somewhat. :D) Why not give it a try? If you don't like it, you can order something else or go to the buffet.
mom2girlsVT Posted August 21, 2010 Author #4 Share Posted August 21, 2010 I tried the Indian food at the buffet once (Taste of Nations)....I had no idea what was supposed to go on what. I figure this dinner option will be put together for me, so I think I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for the replies!
firefly333 Posted August 21, 2010 #5 Share Posted August 21, 2010 If you want a Indian treat of real Indian ... go ask the maitre d' and you can order it 24 hours in advance at dinner. My waiter didnt believe they were going to give me a whole dinner full so he talked me into ordering more ....and again it was half a dozen items and way more than one person can eat. The whole table got to sample too. Its better and the real thing which I prefer. You cant get it the first night, but order it ahead of time for any other night. PS Indian food is the only nationality you can order like this, because most ships have Indian cooks I was told.
travelinggrandma Posted August 21, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 21, 2010 I have the Indian dish in the MDR everytime I cruise and the spice level is always different. Sometimes it's hot, hot, hot and sometimes medium. Maybe you can request the amount of spiciness. I do like the fact that each item is separate on the plate so you can sample all and eat what you like with no problem. Try it, I think you'll enjoy. Mary Ellen1 Posted August 21, 2010 #7 Share Posted August 21, 2010 I had the Indian dinner on the Liberty in March, and it was truly one of the best dinners of the whole cruise. :)
yogimax Posted August 21, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 21, 2010 The Indian food on both Carnival and RCCL tends to be excellent. Part of the reason, no doubt, is the number of Indian chefs onboard!
gizfish Posted August 21, 2010 #9 Share Posted August 21, 2010 Just order both the Indian sampler and the ribs. Many people routinely order two or more entrees. BTW, that is what I did...ended up finishing the Indian sampler and leaving some of the ribs.

lillian marie Posted August 22, 2010 #11 Share Posted August 22, 2010 I really disliked it. It was overcooked, but that may have just been the day and time that I had it.

mom2girlsVT Posted August 22, 2010 Author #14 Share Posted August 22, 2010 Wow! I'm glad to hear that most of those who try it, like it. It's not one of the most talked about dishes. Would love a description of what the actual foods are that are included. I will be trying this in approximately 30 days!
matj2000 Posted August 22, 2010 #15 Share Posted August 22, 2010 Although it was RC, my last cruise, I ordered the Indian dinner every night. Most people don't like it but I always get the hard stuff. I thought it was great.
marshhawk Posted August 22, 2010 #16 Share Posted August 22, 2010 I have debated about ordering this on our next cruise, because it is a healthy option, and I love Indian bread. Thanks for letting me know that it's good, it's a go!:)

Nicole in NJ Posted August 22, 2010 #18 Share Posted August 22, 2010 So now I've learned that ribs are on the MDR menu the first night and an Indian vegetarian dinner. How do you learn this and more? If I see something I like, am I to order it because I might not see it again? Is that how it works? Do they not offer the same thing twice? Thanks

Or is it just different every night and you view the menu at dinner? We don't want to miss the night when lobster is served, and we want to try Nick & Nora's one night too. Thanks. I've never seen where the entire menu for the week is posted. Usually you can see the menu daily on the TV in your cabin or after lunch by the dining room. I've only been on 3 Carnival cruises so I may be missing something.
Nicole in NJ Posted August 22, 2010 #23 Share Posted August 22, 2010 Thanks. I noticed a lot of chilled fruit soups on the sample menu. Has anyone tried them? Opinions? I'll be on the ship on Friday so I guess I'll just give them a try then.
Rosefloater Posted August 22, 2010 #24 Share Posted August 22, 2010 I always order this. It is one of the few meals that I look forward to. Sometimes it is hot spicy and sometimes it is mild spicy. It all depends if the chef has a heavy hand with the spices that day or not. Also this last time, I only got a 1/4 piece of Naan bread instead of getting a full piece. This is what I had on my last cruise on the Paradise in May. Going Clockwise: Naan bread, Roasted Vegetables, Cottage Cheese (Paneer) & Peas, Chickpeas, Rice
CanWeGoYet? Posted August 22, 2010 #25 Share Posted August 22, 2010 I've ordered it a couple times, I thought it was quite good. Also quite filling. Not sure how you could eat an order of ribs plus the vegetarian dinner, but no harm in trying I guess.
