We purchased the wifi service at the Visitor's Information Center building near the ferry dock. I think you can also buy it directly by signing up and paying by credit card through your phone, tablet, or whatever device you'll be using.

We were in Bermuda last year and paid for the three days of Internet, but don't remember where we did that! Does anyone know? We are going in 19 days on the Anthem. Thank you....Ellen

What do you see as the value of doing that on Anthem? You can buy the unlimited high speed Voom internet onboard that ship for the entire cruise.

That's the place! Thank you. $15 for 3 days and we are able to use it off the ship...works for us. Ellen

Interesting. Would you mind telling me more about this? How were you able to purchase only three days? Did it work all over?

Thanks!

That store sells a three day package. It really only works in the dockyard, but good for contacting people at home. It works best right outside the store where there is a picnic bench. Also right outside the ship.

Is that true? Their information says they have a lot of hot spots all over Bermuda.http://www.telebermuda.com/residential/wifi/

We will only be there for the day next Saturday. Does anyone remember if any of the stores, restaurants had free wi-fi?

The Library in Hamilton. The Frog and Onion at the Dockyard. Ask for code. Flanagans in Hamilton, 15 minutes free. St. George, Tavern by the Sea on the Wharf did, but they have changed owners and name to The Wharf. Don't know if they still have it.

Yes, it should work at any of TBI's hot spots....and you don' t have to walk up to a store on the second floor to buy it either. It was for sale at the Visitors Information Center near the ferry dock...or you should be able to buy the WiFi directly via your smartphone or tablet using a credit card (although I'm reluctant to do so because I'm not sure how secure their network is.

  • 3 weeks later...
So there is very limited free wifi in Bermuda? $4.99 hr near a hotspot can add up if one is traveling around!

There is not much free wifi. I mentioned the very few places above. Post 13. The $14.99 for three days (72 hours) is the best bet. Don't have to do $4.99 per hotspot.

I will probably be getting an unlimited package on my ship (Summit) since they have recently put in a new high speed wifi service onboard. I should even be able to make phone calls with wifi calling. I don't really need it traveling around. They don't have it at the beaches where I will be a lot of the time.

Do you know if it's actually 72 hours. I'm on the Veendam and arrive 1PM Monday and leave 1PM Thursday so it's actually 72 hours over 4 calendar days.

Thanks

It says 72 hours. So if you sign up 1PM Monday then your 72 hours would expire 1PM Thursday. It does not say anything about calendar days.

Ditto on T-Mobile USA's Simple Choice Plan ... SMS (texting) is free/unlimited as domestic, unlimited and WiFi calling is 20 cents a minute, once on the islands of Bermuda or within range of cellular towers. Data is slow (128K) at 2G/Edge speed, but usable.

We will also be using Fi Network (Project Fi by Google ... cellular/wifi network with Sprint & T-Mobile as partner) Data is a little "faster" (256K)at 3G speed, it's still not HSPA+/4G LTE speed - but basic email, maps, web browsing & VoIP calling (Skype, FaceTime audio, Hangouts) worked abroad for us - it's designed for Android/Nexus devices ... but, we have the add-on "data only" Fi Sim, activated on the iPad Mini (it's unlocked Sprint & GSM/LTE + WiFi) that we will be using (only paid for actual data usage, no monthly maintenance charge - and, data is $10 USD per GB, same as domestic but slower) https://fi.google.com/about/network/

Don't you have to have a Nexus for Project Fi?

Don't you have to have a Nexus for Project Fi?

Yes, there's been recent price drop for the 3 qualifying Nexus devices - Nexus 6, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P (we have 2 of these) - directly from Google and also via Amazon, they are OEM unlocked with no contract, just like Fi Services ... use & try it for a month, if you don't like it - keep the device/sell it or go back to T-Mobile or port to AT&T, etc. (excellent resale value) N5X is $200 for the 16GB model + taxes & free shipping, nano Sim card is free & FedEx ground in about 3 days.

But, for using the data Sim, iOS devices can be used as well, that's iPad with nano Sim card slots and (unofficially) iPhone 5X and 6X as long as it's running iOS 8 & higher (9.x is recommended) ... got the free data Sim shipped & activated on iPad Mini running 8.x jailbroken) I haven't got around to put it into my unlocked iPhone 5S by VZW to use over WiFi only - it's an inexpensive alternative and/or backup option. We will find out how all this fit together but the Fi Network is reported by other Fi users as being on DigiCel network in Bermuda, as if it's in Jamaica (not on TBI's network, the other carrier)

If this scheme doesn't work or well enough, we could still get the island's paid WiFi plan for 3 days ... we're there in 2012 but not very impressed with the coverage then & even recent reports said it's spotty in coverage, at best - since optimal/maximum range is 300 ft. at most for signals. We have 250 minutes of "free" internet minues from the Breakaway as the promotion, but will try not to use it all up & plan to use it mostly while at sea.

We do lots of air travel and Fi Network is really delivering on its promises and part of it is the partnership with T-Mobile, the cruiselines can't come close to 120+ countries with their rates & once you hit land or go ashore, it's not usable anyway. Of course, US/America's cellular plans & costs are the most expensive compared to other countries - we're in South Korea & Taiwan last October for a 2 week escorted land tour, hotel's free WiFi routinely deliver a 75 MBps to 115 MBps speed, all without paying for a surcharge for "faster" speed - airports @ 100+ MBps, amazing & solidly reliable.

Of course, some of these are foreign language to the average & occasional cruise passenger on internet access ... but, every now & then, I like to tunnel into our home server to check on our security video system online, among other things :D

The other factors that matter to us is Fi's integrated VPN connection over WiFi, unlike most/all cafe's unsecured WiFi, encrypted data traffic should we need to access important data on the links & retrieve info from cloud storage.

Don't want a Nexus.

I will have unlimited high speed internet on Celebrity Summit and I also have AT&T WiFi calling with my iPhone 6S Plus, so that is all I think I need. I don't really need WiFi for my travel around the island, a lot of time will be at beaches, but I would get that 3 day WiFi plan if I did. So I think I am well covered.

PS. They don't have LTE yet in Bermuda but I read both carriers there plan to have LTE later this year.

If I have purchased the ship's wifi - will I be able to use it while on the ship during the time it is docked in Bermuda? I know I couldn't use it off the ship, but will it still be available on the ship?

It will be available on the ship when docked.
