The most recent kidnap and I don't think this is the first time such incidents have occurred.

Of the 4 taken, 2 were Canadians, 1 Norwegian and 1 Filipino woman.

Philippines Police released this grainy video showing the kidnappers leading away their hostages.

One news source we followed reported that authorities believed they found the boat used to kidnap the 4 in rebel controlled area but no signs of their whereabouts or the bad guys.

We just came back from our 2 weeks in Asia, still a bit jet-lagged but read about it. We're in a different DMZ with fully armed military on the move & tanks rolling next to our bus, and soliders weapons waived at roadside checkpoints, a bit un-nerving so it's good to be "Home". There is - sadly - little coverage on US or American media since no US nationals were taken, otherwise CNN would be all over it.

Perhaps, some of the Pope's message needed to get thru - pray that the hostages can come home safely to the loved ones. Most often, the rebels in these regions wanted ransom money in exchange & done quietly, as they can continue to finish their ops ... thus far, no demands had been reported, which could be a good thing if. This has happened not too long ago in the same general area with folks staying in a different land-based marina resort.

CC's planning for those once-in-a-lifetime cruises should always take into consideration the risk factors once they set foot into a port - the cruise ship itself is the protective bubble with some security onboard, on land - you are counting on the wisdom & intel of your guide and driver, to get you in & back out on the first sign of trouble, as tourists & travelers are often specifically targeted.

Obviously this is tragic, but it should be put in perspective. About 4 1/2 million people visit the Philippines every year. Your odds of getting killed in an auto accident in your home town are far greater than being kidnapped in the Philippines or in any other tourist destination.
