weird incident in the explorer of the seas

I am in the explorer of the seas doing the western route. Sunday after we left Miami and at about 10pm, we felt a load noise , like a explotion. the ship tilded on one side at a angle of about 45 degrees. It went like that for about 10 minutes, I was in the Aquarium Bar , and the water from the aquarium started coming out from the top of the aquarium in the side that we were leaning to. Anything that was not tied down felt in the floor, including many bottles and stuff in the gift shop. We asked around but all the anwsers we got just made not sense (i.e. a explotion in the botton of the seas, the capitan flushing his toilet, bad weather when there was not rain outside and the seas were very calm etc etc). Scary, scary, scary. !!!!!

45 degrees? No way perhaps seven to ten at most. 45 would be really, really bad.

Explosions underwater don't happen unless a mine or other charge is detonated. Don't think that's the case either.

Have you noticed a decrease in speed??
Wondering if it was something with the propulsion system, etc went bad??
I am sure you will find out soon if it was something like that..

A very scary situation for the OP, regardless the degree of tilt.

Almost sounds as if the ship bottomed out on a sandbar or something. I experienced that on an aircraft carrier back in the 80s. Imagine a large deck carrier listing 20 degrees to starboard. Freaky stuff. Hitting bottom causes a heinous sound and could cause the ship to list such as what this person is describing.

Could have been caused by poor navigation through relatively narrow sea lanes south of the Miami area. It dangerous in the worst and extremely embarrassing for a captain and driver in the least. I'm not surprised that they're hesitant to admit it. Also, with all of the lawsuit loving passengers on board these days, someone would want cruise credits for life if their drink fell off the bar or something.

I agree. A 45degree tilt is way to far over. Can you imagine what a ship would do if you tilted 14 stories at a 45degree tilt? Funny thing is, I just checked "events at Sea" on cruise junkies and they have listed this report (from cruise critic) on their site and put that the ship was tilted and omitted the 45degrees. Interesting report. Only report so far that I have seen. And it would help if there was a sail date included.

I agree that it could not have been 45 degrees. Voyager class ships are too top heavy and would probably be rolled over from even a 30 degree list.

If the ship really did go 45 degrees over to one side, my guess is there would be smoke, fire, a hole in the ship or something along those lines. I would surely hope that if this really did happen, the Coast Guard would be en-route to get people off the ship or escort it to a safe port. Not to mention, it would probably be all over the media since they monitor police scanners. Also cruisecal.com shows a webcam from the ship and it is in port right now as scheduled. I'm starting to find this story hard to believe.

I have a video of the making of the Voyager class ships and it is a Maritime Requirement for the ships to be able to handle a 45 degree tilt and be able to upright them selves. On the voyager class ships all decks above deck seven I believe it is walls are all aluminum. This was done to take the top heaviness away from these vessels. The problem was how to attach steel to aluminum. A foriegn scientists came up with what they call "Blast Welding" Its all in the video and very very interesting. This video was put out by RCL. Its a three tape set Design and development, Building, A City at sea. These are the names of the three tapes.

If it did strike a sandbar they are required to stop and check to see how much damage was done. It could be a reef that it hit as well. Anytime a ships hits anything they are required to report it.

The same exact thing happend to the Carnival Legend a couple of weeks ago. I do not remember the cause. I think it was a thrown propellor blade.

There have been a couple of instances where the ships "auto pilot" has screwed up and made the ship make a very sharp turn without warning. I think Carnival called this a "navigation error" on the Legend? a couple of weeks ago.

In any case, the ship will list (tilt) quite a bit during this manuver. I was on the Disney Magic a couple of years age when we did a sharp U-turn for a rescue at sea. Even though the list was only a few degrees, it's something the average passenger has never experienced and feels a lot worse than it is.

Unexpected list - explosion - unintentional grounding (contact with sandbar-reef-etc.) Sheesh starting to sound like headlines seen in the supermarket checkout tabloids!

Folks get a grip! There's litterally hundreds of things that can happen and cause a sound like the ship hitting something. Anyone on this ship would know if it were truly serious by now. Sounds like the worst that may have happened is a few bottles of booze fell to their demise. I know that's enough to make some folks cry but still...

It's a millpond out there - flat seas and no rain! Enjoy it while it lasts because trouble is on the way!
