Hi All

I just saw this and was hoping if someone could tell me if it's true or not. It sounds strange, but they don't have anything on order for Costa or after the vista.

Looks like Costa will be the biggest beneficiary, with a rumored new class of 175,000 ton ships.

I bet CCL only gets one ship out of this whole order.

What is your logic for the one ship? Princess has had multiple new builds more than Carnival and HAL as well. My guess would be two. We will see, soon I hope.

Your guess is as good as mine. ;)

Either way, looks like Costa comes out a big winner.

The only thing i can come up with as to why costa would get the big ship is for them to compete with the quantum class in china. Especially after RCI announced a second quantum class is to go to china. costa has a presence in asia. Just hope for the sake of the company they don't let joe farcus design a 170k gt ship. I would say carnival cruise line would get a few of the 10 since it has an aging fleet.

I heard a rumor a few months ago that Costa was designing a prototype about that size so I guess it was a valid rumor. With Royal Caribbeans quick movement into China with new tonnage I expect one if not both of the prototypes to go right to China, or perhaps one of the prototypes and the new Costa Diadema.

I'm sure Carnival Cruise Lines will get two or three new builds for themselves, in anticipation for Virgin cruises and the MSC seaside both coming stateside in a couple of years. Probably one or two of the Fantasy class will be retired in the next 4 years, too.

Here's a sneak peak at what the Virgin twins may look like: http://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/12370-virgin-cruises-ship-renderings-and-details-shown-in-lawsuit-filings.html

Not sure if Costa will get newbuilds from Fincantieri for China. Carnival's strategy in China appears to be to have a Chinese subsidiary (either a new entity or Costa) that builds in China, flags Chinese, and gets around the cabotage laws that will restrict foreign built ships.

I think Carnival will get 2 ships, Costa 2, P&O one, China 3, HAL maybe one, Aida one, leaving one for the other lines. And remember, this order book is reported to stretch out over the next 14 years.

I suspect the Chinese market, for Chinese passengers, not North Americans looking to cruise China, will be the big winner.

Agree that the Chinese market is the winner.

That isn't a lot of ships over that many years.

Perhaps Carnival is trying to get things moving on building ships in China by threatening to build them elsewhere. Or maybe they are trying to assure slots at shipyards in anticipation of new competition.

The problem with threatening to build the China ships elsewhere is that they would then not enjoy the favorable cabotage status of ships built in China, and would be on equal footing with other lines with foreign built ships.

True, but isn't Carnival currently the leader in the Asian market? They likely want to hold onto that position while negotiating with China and that will take new ships from somewhere.

Yeah the rumor might not have been "new ships at a Chinese yard", but "new ships for a Chinese line."

I know Costa and Princess cater to the Chinese market, but I'm not aware of any major structural changes that were made for this market, which are required, even by Carnival's statements to meet the demographic of the Chinese. Star cruises has ships built for the Chinese market. Since their foreign built ships will most likely be displaced by Chinese built ships when they come, it makes more sense, to me, to place the new ships in the established markets, and take the older ships, renovate them for the Chinese market (no buffets, bigger casinos, smaller theaters), and then dump them when they are displaced by Chinese builds.

Perhaps you're right but the article mentioned the ships would be built at either Fincantieri or Meyer; so i thought that maybe the Chinese company would have ships announced at a later date as there was only a memorandum of understanding signed and not an official deal. Yet. I do believe that a Chinese cruise line is that best way to penetrate the market.

That hull form is making a comeback. Look at the future USS Zumwalt. Aida's new Japanese built ships are moving in this direction, as well, although not as radically.
