NORWEGIAN JEWEL - Interior Photos

NCL has released some interior artist renderings of NORWEGIAN JEWEL. Looks interesting. For me personally the decor is a little too Asian for my liking. A little too ornate and over the top, like an Atlantic City casino hotel. I'm sure many will love it, it's just not for me.

I should clarify my statement. The decor is not Asian in that it looks like something you think of being traditional Japanese or Chinese. It's Asian in that the style is generally what appeals to many middle-class Asians. Bright and bold colors, shiny surfaces, lot's of red and green, extensive use of patterns. Having been to several cities in Asia, the decor reminds of some mass-market type hotels and casinos I have been to .... maybe even a few hotels in Hawaii that cater to the Japanese, and even some casino junket ships.

This is the same feeling I got when I sailed on NORWEGIAN STAR. It was different in that I felt the entire ship was designed for Asians, which it pretty much was. Even some of the seats seemed smaller and lower to the ground. The colors were very bold, there were a lot of patterns, and many shiny surfaces of gold or silver.

There is nothing wrong with it, it's just not my personal style. I prefer the decor of QM2 and Celebrity ships. They are vastly different with mostly neutral colors, extensive use of wood veneers, and splashes of color here and there. Another new favorite is CRYSTAL SERENITY which has interiors that look very much like QM2's. Not surprising considering many of the same design teams were used.

I should also mention there are areas of the ship that I think look very appealing. I think the atrium lobby especially looks very unique and smart. Much different than what we have been seeing on new ships lately.

I'm glad NCL is producing innovative ships with bold interiors. Just because the renderings are not to my liking doesn't mean I won't want to sail on JEWEL someday. Besides, many times the finished product is quite different than the renderings. I'm not a huge fan of NCL but they do seem to be getting better and better with each new ship.

I wish them the best.

Thanks for these pics, Ernie! We're booking Jewel for one of those New England/Canadas and it's great to get an idea of the interiors. Looks more serious than the Dawn, but perhaps more elegant, too. As a Dawn fan, however, I'm not sure what to think of the new ship's 2 (only) main dining rooms -no Impressions-, no cinema, no lap pool, and the contraction of Dawn's 4 separate card, lifestyles, game & writing rooms. Very old-fashioned, having so many great places to enjoy quieter amusements. The Jewel, I suspect, was designed to generate a little more revenue. The redesigned pool & sunning decks, though, sound great :) .

I rather like what I see - the atrium looks rather elegant, and Chin Chin looks much more appealing than the very bland Bamboo on DAWN.

On the other hand, it's unfortunate that she will have no indoor pool. The cinema is a more minor omission. It's also interesting to see that that not only has the third main dining room gone the way of the dodo, but the second one (Azura, aka Aqua on DAWN) seems to have gotten an awful lot smaller... Meaning more seating capacity in extra-charge restaurants, and less in included ones. Whether this is based on demand or is a try by NCL to get more people into the extra-charge restaurants, I don't know.

In the end only time will tell if JEWEL is an advancement over STAR/DAWN - I suppose in some ways she will be, and in some ways (notably lack of an indoor pool) she won't be. But it will be interesting to see what the decor turns out like as this ship was designed for the US market unlike STAR/DAWN - so it will be interesting if the "Asian look" (which was described perfectly by Ernie) remains. If so, I guess that's an indication that American passengers like it - if not, no doubt they'd have Tillberg come up with something else (they're experts at replicating almost any style you can possibly imagine).

After reading the literature regarding jewel it is hard to tell if there will or won't be a cinema? Do you have the deck plans Doug? No cinema doesn't matter to me very much as they play the same first run movies in the staterooms on the dawn/star.

Regarding an indoor pool, Both the dawn and star do have the indoor lap pool in the spa area, I would assume the jewel will continue this....

I'm excited about bar central.. Because giving the later night crowd one hangout spot will increase the atmosphere at night. I'm also excited about the 10 minivillas which will share their own private pool, courtyard, and gym.. I'd love to be sailing in one of those for an innagural voyage.....

ChrisConnelly. go to NCL's website and under fleet, click Jewel... then you get an option for deckplans. No lap pool. I like the cinema/lecture room on Dawn, although I believe it seats only 195. As a venue for lectures, however, this beats the cavernous showroom, and movies on a tv, first run or not, don't make the same impression, IMHO. The space definitely makes no money for NCL, though. Tsar's Palace seems much larger in the plans than the current Venetian, possibly enough so to absorb lost 'Azura' and 'Impressions' seating. I wonder if this is a traffic, and/or staffing issue. A separate dining room requires much duplication of staff -more tables in the big dining room require only a few more waiters...

Deck plans are on NCL's web site. There is no cinema or lap pool.

Personally I wouldn't use either and so wouldn't miss them - but I'm sure some people wood. As I said, the total lack of any indoor pool seems to be quite an omission. The cinema is a feature most other ships don't have anyhow, but most ships the size of JEWEL do have an indoor pool of some sort.

Is it possible that only 38 people have looked at these great drawings of the new NCL ship? Take a gander, ye NCL fans, the link is at the start of Eroller's thread. I'm betting that MANY of us will find ourselves gazing at the real thing within a year or so...

I just looked at the deck plans for the Jewel on the NCL website.

In the spa area there is what they call the relaxation/wet area where there is a floorplan drawing for some type of pool. If you look under the press release for the Jewel NCL lists that she will have both a jet-current exercise pool and an indoor lap pool.

That makes me feel better because I do use the lap pool. Loved it on the Dawn and look forward to it in Jan. on the Star. The jet-current exercise pool seems great.

I loved the Dawn decor so much (especially the lobby carpet, that was the first thing I saw entering the ship and it made a BIG impression on me) and for me the Jewel lacks of colorful patterns (I like the mini-suite capet though). It's simply a matter of personnal taste, we all like different things and I like colors (done in a tasteful way).

I am sailing on the Spirit the 17th of this month from Miami. This will be my second NCL cruise - my first was on the Leward and she was a neat ship, but not really an NCL Fleetmate. I figure, therefore, my Spirit cruise will IMO be my first real NCL experience.

I cruise about 10 times a year. For some unknown reason, I have been loyal to the likes of HAC, CCL, Radisson, Cunard, X - but not NCL...so I am anxious to experience the NCL brand. I love ships, the sea and the cruise experience...

From what I have seen, and recently read, NCL has an appeal and finese that many of today's cruise lines are simply missing - NCL seems to have taken a different path towards delivering a mass market product. For example, their new ships are evidence of a commitment to quality and individuality. These new ships being built in Germany by perhaps one of the finest shipbuilders today further supports a desire to be different and excel as an industry leader.

The Jewel looks splendid and gives us a look into a very unique and carefully designed ship. What a departure from cookie cutter floating shoeboxes and the confused design clutter found on many of today's megaliners.

My only issue is as a single traveler, where and how do I eat without looking like a hermit - I fret at the thought of sitting alone at a table for 8...but with my mouth and personality, I am confident that Freestyle dining will appeal to us single sailers...I can't wait to report on the Spirit and promise to post an educated review along with a portfolio of photos from what I believe will prove to be a very special ship and experience.

Holy moly, I guess I can't read: the long version of the press release expressly mentions lap pool and jet-current exercise pool. Mea culpa, NCL... I've already booked for 9/28/05 but now my happiness is well nigh complete. Can't tell where the jetpool is from the deckplan, but the lap pool seems to have views out big windows at the back of the ship. In fact, with the 2 outdoor pools, Jewel has FOUR pools. Verrry nice. Thanks for pointing this out, marilynd!

I'm a first time cruiser (London based) and have just booked the maiden voyage on the JEWEL on 10 August with my family. I am very much looking forward to it but have nothing to liken it to....it sounds like you guys have plenty of experience in these things. Any tips or advice you can give me?????

Thanks for posting this, Eroller.

I have deck plans. Jewel is in the South America & Panama Canal brochure - 2005/2006. I see two main pools, one in the relation/wet area, a private pool for the garden villas. I don't see anything aft.

No cinema either, where would I look for that, lower decks?

Hello Tinbum My DH and I are also booked on the maiden voyage Aug 10.

There is a roll call started. It is started by PTcruisers. They posted the date as Jewel 8/10/03 in error. I found it by doing a search.

I have seen the drawings. There is a lap pool in the spa area. The press on the Jewel also mentions a swim against the current pool in the spa area.

Can't wait for the actual photos of the ship.

It also appears that NCL has departed from the soaring

multi floor atriums of the past. Jewel appears to only have

a two floor atrium with no open glass elevators. Not sure

if Im going to miss that or not?

I went to the Jewel site and can't find the press release that indicates the Jewel will have this type of pool. Can you tell me where to find it.

The jewel will have four pools as described earlier. There is a small cinema by the teen area, but I don't know if this is for everyone or kids/teens. Being in this area it will probably be used by teenas anyway.

I just spent some time looking over the deck plans and found myself giving some serious thought to a Jan. 2006 booking. I noticed two things re the staterooms-1) it is now possible to book and AFT AF minisuite (our favorite) on deck 11:D and, 2) the forward AA penthouse suites on decks 9 and 10 will also be able to use the private pool area on deck 14 (for those of you who really like having 2 balconies). I am really sorry that an Impressions type restaurant has been eliminated. That is our favorite on the Dawn but, the addition of an outside aft area (where the kiddie pool is on the dawn) with tables and chairs looks great! I did envy the folks with "littleies" cause I thought they had the best outdoor spot on the whole ship. Course, now that the kiddie pool area is so close to the main pool area may prove to be an irritation to some--not to this "gramma" of 18 though:cool:

love the pics, can't wait to see her in person. We were hoping to sail her in Sept on the transatlantic cruise, but she is so close to sold out I have a feeling we won't get to this time. We can't make our final plans for about another month or so. NMnita
