Constellation 4/2-4/9

Just got back home from my first Celebrity experience. I must admit that this cruise line is grossly overrated. I am certain that I will quickly be attacked by those who have "ingested the kool aid." But for those who are contemplating a "clebrity experience" think twice. There is absolutely nothing special nor even interesting about this experience. I have never been so bored in my life, not that we (wife and I) are party animals (not even close) but the boredom at times was overwheliming. No music playing on the pool deck! Casino shut down during much of the day as were the shops. I have a nicer movie theater in my home (I really do!). There were many time, almost on a daily basis, where you think..."where is everyone"..."is this a ghost town". I was actually embarrased because I am the one who researches our vacations, and this one was most definately a swing and a miss.

Now not everything was terrible. We had a sky suite which was nice. We had a butler who was the highlight of this trip. Were it not for our butler this trip would have been one of the most disappointing for us. The dinners were very good, as was Oceanliners.

Now to more of the bad. The breakfast and lunch buffets were absolutely the worst that I have ever had. You can only have so many waffles and omlettes or you can only have so much pasta at the pasta bar. The juices watered down beyond what one should consider "juice". We even went to San Marco for breakfast and lunch and they were not much better. The lack of any enticing entertainment during the day and the poor quality of entertainment at night was a true disappointment. The cirque experience was laughable, something I would consider embarrassing. In speaking to others on the ship there were many who felt the same way. I could go on and on but I will stop. For those of you who are X fans I would recommend toning down your enthusiasm, as the expectations built cannot be met. This is a middle of the road cruise line with the word "luxury" being used very loosely.

I could not have said it better myself.

According to the OPs one other post, he was invited to the Captain's table on the second formal night and declined. Couple that with the complaint that the casinos were closed and the entertainment was limited in port and one wonders if this was not only the OPs first Celebrity cruise, but his first cruise at all. Possibly he would have preferred a Carnival cruise where there tends to be more activities on board when in port (though, of course, the casinos would still be closed) and more noise (music, etc.) than quiet.

Some people just do not know what to expect and, as a result, there is disappointment. Too bad the OP didn't ask some questions here before his cruise rather than only posting after his return with complaints.

I see OPs join date was march 05. Perhaps everyone is right and cruising just isn't for OP. Or maybe it was just a bad cruise. I was on Galaxy in 2004 and Galaxy 2002. same itinerary same time of year. hated the 2002 cruise loved the 2004. so I guess it is possible that the cruise was bad but the complaints (as others already pointed out) seem to be about things that are true of every cruiseline when in port. There are people that really do not like the cruise experience. To each is own.

You can bet the OP will miss that sky suite and butler if they cruise with another line. Turning down the dinner invite was interesting also. Those Capt table dinners make some great pictures to bring back home, along with all the drinks that are included all night. :D Plus the invite is rare. Most likely it wont happen to them again.

A big part of the celebrity experiance for us, IS, a suite and Butler. I know we sure did miss celebrity on our carnival cruise a few months ago. Nothing but sandwiches on Carnivals room service menu. So, forget in cabin meals, let alone someone to put a table cloth on the table. :eek: Maybe the OP has nothing to compare.

I agree, if they thought the casino would be open while in port, then this was there first cruise. :confused:

On the last Carnival cruise there were not even drink waiters out at the pool on port days. :(

We sailed on Connie last April and have found that we were spoiled compared to the Carnival Spirit trip we just completed.

As mentioned, on Carnival the drink waiters were plentiful on the first day, then disappeared. We had to go tho the pool bar for our drinks. When the kids presented their soda cards, the bar tenders disappeared until all "paying" customers were served. The dining room service was deplorable. We have had better service at a banquet. The waiters were delivery people, not waiters, drop & run. Even the supper club left something to be desired, four people at our table had completed desert before the fifth even received theirs.

When we voiced these comments to the "Carnival Vacation Club" sales person, they shrugged their shoulders and stated you can not compare Carnival to Celebrity, as X is a higher priced line. NOT!!!!

I will tell you that we were extremely happy with the Connie experience and were spoiled to no end. I do not think we will be satisfied with anything less in the future.

We are trying X for the first time Feb 2006. Have sailed Carnival 7 times and Love the Spirit, Legend and Miracle.

Only cruise we did not like -- more the ship -- was the Destiny -- Yet others LOVE her --

Everyone has an opinion -- I have found the best is to keep an open mind -- then I am not disappointed.

At first, I thought that this had to be from one of those whining and complaining old farts of my generation (I'm 64), but the OP's profile says he/she is only 36. My wife is 36 and she loves everything about the M-Class ships and is incapable of being bored on a cruise.

My second thought was that this was a very poorly-thought-out troll

attack specifically intended to cut down Celebrity and those of us who love the M-class ships. I was trying to decide whether he/she was a mole for Carnival or for NCL.

My third thought was that he/she had to be pretty ignorant not to realize that the casino and shops aren't allowed by law to be open when in port. And it was obvious that the OP probably never left the ship during the cruise.

The statement that there was never any music by the pool is also laughable.

As for the Windjammer buffets, there is a lot more offered than pasta, waffles and omelettes. There are burgers, pizza, the Aqua Spa delicacies, the Sushi Bar, almost every type of fruit, cheese and salads you can image, casseroles, roast beef, themed specialties often representing the ports being visited, many different types of breads, soups, etc. etc. etc. Some people generally just sort of look down on the buffet "experience" as not being elegant enough for them, but there's a much broader variety of food offered there than in the dining room at lunch and breakfast.

I wouldn't know about the movie theater, because in nine cruises we've always been too busy with tours or activities (and reclining in a lounge chair near the pool sipping Coronas or BBCs is definitely one of the most important activities on sea days:cool: ) to ever have the time to spend two hours watching a movie.

If he was so bored, then it seems like the Captain's Table would have been a refreshing change of pace from his customary lethargy, tedium and ennui. He also didn't mentioned why he/she declined the invitation, although at this point you have to wonder why in the world they were included. It certainly couldn't have been because of his or her personality.:D And it appears painfully obvious that the OP had never been on a cruise ship before.

It's almost as if he or she read a review or two of the Constellation, got confused about what they were reading, and then tried to make up an egregiously negative review to flame the ship and Celebrity supporters.

There are just too many inconsistences and false "facts" being offered to make me think this post is a legitimate opinion.

The closest I ever came to being bored was on SeaDream, where at 64, I was one of the youngest passengers onboard. This was right after 9/11 (November 2001) and there were only 52 passengers on the 4,000 ton ship, which normally carried 104. Most nights, after 10:00 p.m. I was the only person still up. The service and food were fantastic, and the liquor was all-inclusive, but of course you pay a premium for that. Several tours were cancelled because they didn't have enough people sign up, or because of rough water which wouldn't let us dock at the port. During the sea days, there were literally NO activities. All you could to was read, watch a video in your room, or sit on deck and talk to other people.

We love the M-class ships because we can choose an activity to match our mood. SeaDream, even though the average age was about 70, didn't even have Bingo, which most of us old people love. We even laugh at the corny jokes when we've heard them 1,000 times. Well, I don't, but everyone else seems to. "B-1, the Baby of Bingo!", "I-22, two ducks on a pond... quack, quack", "B-11, nice legs! Wooo... Wooo".

One of my wife's friends at work is gay and we've been to Gay Bingo with him a few times. All proceeds support RAIN, I think. Gay Bingo is much more interesting:D The announcer is a drag queen, and transvestites skate around on rollerskates to collect cards and verify cards. Any time that "O-69" is called, everyone is required to stand up, raise their hands to the ceiling and cheer and yell. It's definitely a little different from Bingo on HAL or some of the other "senior-oriented" cruise lines.:)

We sailed on Connie last April and have found that we were spoiled compared to the Carnival Spirit trip we just completed.

 

I will tell you that we were extremely happy with the Connie experience and were spoiled to no end. I do not think we will be satisfied with anything less in the future.

My wife and I are about to sail on the Constellation TA cruise. I asked a question over on the roll call board but no one answered (yet anyway) so I thought I'd ask over here and to someone who has been on the Constellation a number of times. I hear that there are no laundry facilities for guests but that their dry cleaning service is good. A 14-days and nights cruise will put heavy pressure on my wardrobe if I can't get some laundry done. Do I have to take 15 sets of underwear or can I get stuff washed and dried. Or do I need to do the rinse it in the sink and hang it over the balcony railing trick if I run short (so to speak)?

I thought about bringing only some (a week's worth), and then having the laundry done, but decided two things: underwear takes up very little room in a suitcase, and they're always having a sale on underwear at Ross/Target/Marshall's, so stocking up on a few extra pair was easy. The laundry is also charged by the piece, and, while not expensive, I didn't want to waste $ on things like underwear and socks.

I did end up sending out some laundry- mostly exercise clothes because I hadn't predicted how GOOD I'd be about that for two weeks!:) The price seemed moderate, especially when compared to my bar bill!:o

If your luggage is on wheels and you have enough to bring without doing laundry, go for it! Do watch the 50 vs. 70 lb. weight limits on airlines though.

About halfway through the cruise, we assembled a lot of "basics" (underwear, t-shirts, polo shirts, dockers, tuxedo shirt, etc.) and sent it out to Celebrity's laundry. It came back the next day and the total bill was something like $35. It was probably cheaper than what I'd have to pay here in Charlotte. It made it possible to pack a lot fewer clothes for the trip.

Thank you very much for this info. It is exactly what I was looking for.

Exactly the barbs I was expecting. Without knowing anything about me many of you have made ridiculous assumptions, such is life I suppose! It is unfortunate that this constructive criticism is not scrutinized for its validity but rather is attacked by those who fail to or refuse to see the flaws of this experience. Being honest and truthful with insightful introspection is the only way that you as X fans can improve the experience for those who are new to Celebrity. My comments were meant to "awaken" those who only read the rah, rah, rah comments posted on this board. Given the unfortunate replies above I will make sure not to recommend celebrity to all friends and co-workers.

First let me clarify a few things for you. This is not my first cruise. Yes, we did get off the ship at every port and spent virtually the entire day on the islands (CDC, Grenada, Barbados, Antigua, and St. Thomas==we went to St. John). Staying on that ship during a port day would definately bring out suicidal tendincies in even the most stable person. No, my wife and I are not comatose like webecruisin', after spending the entire day on any of the islands we would return, shower and then go out to enjoy the "activities" or enjoy the "ship". Unfortunately, there was virtually nothing happening on this ship, it was amazing. It was one vast ghost town. And no, we are not fans of the Carnival party line (have never been on Carnival). I walked around the entire cruise apologizing to my beautiful wife, explaining to her how the ratings for this ship were amongst the best. It was hard to believe that at even 7pm one could hear a pin drop at the champagne/martini bar. No music, no people, no nothing. When the live music finally did start I burst out laughing thinking that who they had up there was clearly a joke. No joke, the dynamic duo were the main act!

Again, I could go on and on but I wont. Please note that spewing your celebrity flavored venom towards those who have legitimate complaints accomplishes nothing. So I fully expect more barbs about how this is only my third post, about how I am from a different board, how I never got off the ship, how I am a gambling addict, how I am "ignorant", etc...Is it so hard to believe that maybe your beloved ship is not so perfect, and does in fact have many flaws. And yes, I do feel "ignorant" for spending our 10 year anniversary with celebrity. Oh by the way Webecruisin' you said....

Maybe what you say above explains why she is not bored on an M class ship, catch my drift?

Did you ever read your daily activities and event sheet? Activities start at 7:00AM and ends in the wee hours of the morning.

As far as being bored with the breakfast food, what exactly did you want for breakfast that Celebrity didn't or couldn't provide. Did you try the Cova Cafe for a european flair? And yes I must admit that most pasta bars do have nothing but pasta (duh)... Did you try the pizza or the sushi bar? Or how about the wonderful midnight bites?

Did you ever sit on your balcony and gaze out at the beautful waters, and think to yourself how fortunate I am to be here. Guess not!

I wasnt going to get involved.......but I have to say something and I apologize ahead of time but this will be a very very long one. I was on this exact cruise April 2-9. While, yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion I have to disagree with alzaco68. I am 31 my DH is 34. We felt the food to be delicious, we are New Yorkers who love and enjoy good food. The cuts of meat for a cruise ship was just unbelievable. We had a balcony room and enjoyed breakfast in the room or on the balcony so we did the room service thing most mornings except two mornings we did the buffet. I absolutely LOVED the waffles at the buffet. There were sooooo many choices for breakfast-cereal, pancakes, french toast, waffles, fruit, omelettes, etc., you name it. Want bacon? you got it! want sausages? you got it! I can tell you that every day I had something different for breakfast. I even went to the Cova Cafe in the morning after a massage and another day after an ION treatment and loved that too. The chocolate crossants were delicious and so was the cappuccino (I am a huge Starbucks fan and this cap was good). What I am trying to say is that it is impossible, in my opinion to not have enuf choices for breakfast. I wont even bother to get into the lunch ordeal cuz as someone else mentioned earlier between the pizza, burgers, hot dogs, buffet, sushi bar, again too many choices.

My DH and I got off at every single port and I have to say, while sooooo many people were afraid or scared or just didnt care to "chance it" and get off the ship at Dominican Republic I think its a darn shame cuz I have real nice pics from that port and we went to a really nice beach called Catalina Island. Being from New York, we are use to "scammers" so while there was an attempt to try to rip us off at one of the shops at the beach, we dismissed it and actually expected it.....though all we purchased was a hat for my DH for $10 (average price).

Oh another port worth mentioning is Grenada. While, yes there was a lot of devastation, the scenery was still absolutely beautiful. We went on the 4x4 adventure and it was my favorite excursion all week. I even got really really burnt on my arms but STILL consider it my favorite favorite excursion. Your in this open 4x4 with bars above your head to hold onto and you can just see everything. Your in this vehicle climbing hills that my DH and I joked that there was no way his Dodge Neon was climbing that made you feel you was going to fall off the hill. Another thing worth mentioning is that you may want to purchase some spices from here. I got so much for me and my mother-in-law as we love to cook especially with fresh fruits, vegetables and of course SPICES. Dont be afraid to "wheel and deal" with the people when you make your purchases.

Finally I want to add something about St. Thomas. I was just a lil disappointed with the "great shopping" that everyone spoke soooo much about. My DH and I got back from our excursion and walked over to the shopping area (maybe this wasnt the right shopping area?????) and I can tell you that there were no deals to be found. I shopped around for a watch, a Citizens Eco Drive valued at $265 and was offered $159 at St. Thomas. Previously on the ship the same watch was offered to me at $147. Guess where I purchased the watch afterwards. We even tried to price out my camera and compare what my DH paid for mine for Christmas and once again, he got a much, much better deal here in New York. I wanted to purchase the imitation name brand handbags that others on the boards spoke about for $20 or $30. I couldnt find any shops there that were even selling them. Although there were sooo many jewelry stores. But Im sure we were probably in the wrong shopping area.......at least I hope.

I feel bad that alzaco68 was so bored. I felt that I didnt have enuf time. Every morning after breakfast, DH and I ran out of the ship to our excursion and then spent the rest of the day in the port enjoying it, shopping, whatever. I just didnt have too much time to spend on the ship. When we would come back from a long day at a port, we went to our cabin, changed into our suits and jumped in the pool which had loud varied music every single day and if it wasnt the band, it was just regular music playing. We managed to jump into the incredible "t" pool which is the Thalassotherapy pool and absolutely loved it and now miss it (yes it was FREE). I thought it to be hotter than some of the jacuzzi's and a heck of a lot nicer. I was amazed to see 6 jacuzzis in total.

I have to mention something else that alot of people mention on the boards....there are alot and I do mean alot more younger people on this cruise than anticipated. Alot more people in their 30's than I imagined. I was very happy about that. Sooooooooooooo, many nice people too. I am not only talking about the crew, my waiter Marius and my room attendant Marta, I am speaking about other cruisers. My DH and I would get in the pool, or at a table at the buffet and we were able to conversate with everyone we sat with (young, old, in between) and even had a great time with that. We met some really nice people and continue to talk to them today. Even traded pics with them. I dont know, I guess life is what you make it. My table mates at dinner Debbie and Brent (Canada), Rhinea and Claudia (Germany) were the best table mates I ever had. Every night we all enjoyed the shows after dinner and had drinks in a lounge or at one of our balconies.

My DH and I passed by the movie theatre and peaked in real quick it seemed fine. I gotta tell ya, when I chose this cruise, I chose it for the ports and not so much the ship. That being said, I had absolutely no interest in the movie theatre. I watch movies at home and you can be sure that I did not spend a couple of thousand dollars to watch a movie on the ship.

We did the wine tasting on the ship and while I DONT DRINK it was still fun tasting things I know I will never drink. It was cute at one point cuz there were about 20 kids dressed as pirates walking through the room and while the guy doing the wine tasting was talking all the kids creaped through the room and then screamed "raaaah". It was adorable and funny cuz you can see that the guy in charge pretended he didnt hear a thing but you know he was annoyed. The best is........I never saw any of those kids thereonafter except in the buffet area in a corner where they all sat there quietly behaving. Cutos to the staff on board for kids activities. I want to tell people also that another girl I know Brooke did the Flower arrangement class at 11:00am which Im pretty sure was every morning? But she loved it and best of all got to bring the flowers to her room and keep them. The other couple, Debbie and Brent both watched the ice carving which I think was on the pool deck and they were amazed how the carving was done in a mere matter of minutes. I wanted to do the elegant tea as we had done previously on the Zenith in June, 04 but just didnt have enuf time.

I want to tell everyone that after running around all day at every port, I enjoyed laying in the shade by the pool and falling asleep. We had late dinner seating so enjoying an hour of peace before the hustle and bustle of getting showered and ready for dinner and then the after dinner activities was the greatest. Yes even at 31 I actually needed a teeny weeny little nap to continue the night til about 2am and yet we would start the day at approx 7am.

Okay, after all that has been said........in all fairness, I saved the "Celebrity Today" daily paper. If you dont want to exercise or listen to some kind of yap, yap speach, most times there isnt anything "exciting" going on while in Port, if you dont leave the ship. HOWEVER, before everyone kills me.......Celebrity is known for "EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE". I dont care to climb rock walls or go ice skating and as I said earlier, I chose this cruise for the ports and did an excursion in every single one. Mostly my DH and I chose this for the food and service and boy were we ever satisfied.

Lastly I will comment on the Cirque du Soleil experience. I tried to make it into the "white night" and they will not and I do repeat, they will NOT let you in without some kind of mask, if you need to attend.......go to Party City or some party store prior to the cruise and purchase a $2.00 mask cuz the cheapest on board was $20. I peaked in and it looked freaky to me. Something I wish I got to participate in. People dancing with weird lighting and those characters running around. We did get to make it to one of the other nights with the regular experience. I liked it, rather I think we all enjoyed it. My DH and I and all of our table mates attended for about an hour or so. There were about 5 characters running around. I will admit this to the world and I dont care........people in costumes freak me out but I still enjoyed this. The only complaint I have about this is that the characters spend a little too much time with the individuals they select. They need to be out into the audience a bit more. There were little weird shows on stage but because we showed up late and got poor seating, the view we got was not so good but It was pretty cool to still watch. Someone in a previous post stated that it was like a Star Wars experience in one of those Star Wars movies....thats a perfect description.

Another thing worth mentioning is that by the time we made it to our final port, St. Thomas, my DH was very sunburnt. We ran to the excursion desk 1 hour prior to our beach excursion "St. John Beach tour" and would you believe that Celebrity even accomodated us with that 1 HOUR PRIOR to the excursion and let us exchange the tour for something without the beach in it? We were so thrilled.

Also, I went to the spa three times. One for a stone massage with is awesome. My favorite massage ever! Another trip cuz my DH won at the auction a half price "Ionithermie treatment" for me. While this is not my forte, I went with a smile and an open mind. It was weird to be sitting in clay covered from belly down to above the knee and then having these wires pulsing on your thighs etc., it was a different experience and if my DH didnt win it, I probably wouldnt have tried it. Would I recommend it? Only if you want seriously soft skin for a few days in those areas. Did I lose "inches"? Not in my opinion. The third trip I made to the spa was for a "hair up" done by this American girl from California named Alicia. I highly recommend her. I have very long hair and I didnt know what to do for the "hair up" and she just performed magic and I ended up with so many compliments throughout the night that it was crazy. To boot, the cost was ONLY $33.00!!!!!!!!! You couldnt pay that for a hair CUT here in New York.

Finally, my DH and I went to the specialty restaurant "Oceanliners". The ambiance was really, really nice. They sat us at a table in the corner where I got to sit on a couch, it was pretty cool. The service was just a tad above the regular dining room experience. However, the food was the same quality only prepared slightly different to look a lil fancier. To us, not worth the extra $60 total and night away from our great table mates. Plus a glass of wine was more money here.

Okay, after stating all that, a very very long review, I want to say that I loved the ship, the itinerary, the crew members and my table mates. If you consider Celebrity to only be a "middle of the line" company, then what do you consider Carnival and Norwegian, who both can't even come close to the class and quality of Celebrity??? I'm confused.

I thought the movie theater was more than adequate for a ship; but why for the life of me, would you spend all that money to do something you could do at home??

The only thing I will agree with, is that the entertainment on X ships is usually not as good as some other lines and does need improvement, but they more than make up for it with their food quality, very courteous service, and willingness to do whatever it takes to please the customer. Unless I find something better in the same price range, I will always go back to Celebrity.
