Summit Independence Day cruise to New England and Canada

Hello! I am a frequent cruiser and also a reader of this board, although an infrequent poster. I appreciate how helpful and, typically, civil the discourse is, so I am hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here.

We are on the 11 day Summit cruise embarking June 27th. Any thoughts about can't miss excursions and lunch places to check out. We are certainly not tied into ship sponsored and love good seafood, especially lobster!

I have already posted in the roll call but would love to hear other thoughts.

On a related note, thoughts on the different butlers on the Summit? We are fortunate enough to be able to travel Suite class on this cruise. This will be the second time to do so on this ship and I don't think we took advantage of that particular perk the first time around, although we certainly made great use of Michael's!

Assuming you going to Newport I have a great lunch spot. Right near where get off the tenders there is a Marriott, can’t miss it. Walk down the left side of the Marriott, go through the fence and there will be a food truck. Great seafood and delicious lobster rolls. Be advised they are made with Mayo.

Also we took a very nice trolley tour with AIr Conditioning through Newport with a stop at the Breakers. There is also a visitors center on the right side of the Marriot

Across from the Marriott is the country’s oldest operating Minor League baseball stadium.

Assuming you going to Newport I have a great lunch spot. Right near where get off the tenders there is a Marriott, can’t miss it. I see your in Boston overnight, gotta go to Legal Seafood next to the terminal at Harborside for your lunch lobster or if you want a very elegant dinner make a reservation upstairs at Floor Two. It will be a night to remember.

Better yet the DW and I can come pick you up with my boat and give you a whirlwind tour and lunch cruise of Marblehead, Salem, Manchester by the Sea and Gloucester.

In Portland if you like lobster try the Fried Lobster at DiMilios on the water. OMG!

In Portland we love a little hole in the wall place called the Porthole Restaurant. It's only a few minutes walk from where you'll be docked. They do a twin lobster dinner (also available at lunch) for $25. Don't know what time you sail but if you're there in the evening, the Porthole has live entertainment on some nights. We did a tour on the back of an old firetruck in Portland too...that was a fun way to see the city!

We really liked the Summit. Great crew!

We're doing this cruise on Anthem in the Fall. I went to the Ports of Call Board https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20 and did a search on each city you are visiting. Lots of great info on tours, restaurants, and pubs. I found there are lots of pubs and craft beers in Portland, so I am attempting to organize a pub crawl for those who might be interested and not taking a tour.

LisaLeone: We are on the same cruise. Due to some family issues we had to re-arrange future cruises, and so we moved two cruise reservations to the Summit. We will be on the June 27th sailing and the one prior too. Perhaps we will meet in Michael's Club, and I will get myself motivated to real the roll call in a day or two.

But we did a B2B2B series on the Summit last fall with the first two cruises being slightly different Canada/New England itineraries. During both of the Canada/New England cruises we were on the hunt for lobster -- lobster rolls, lobster dinners -- we didn't care. In Portland we enjoyed a lobster meal at the Porthole which a previous poster has mentioned. It was casual, loud and great fun.

In Halifax (both the first and middle leg stopped there) we thought we had the best lobster roll of the trip. On the first leg we happened on the lobster rolls at Goldwater Seafoods and were very impressed. We tried them again on the second leg, and again thought that their lobster roll was the best -- excellent roll and not too much mayo on the lobster. They are located in the Halifax Seaport Farmer's Market. I don't remember any seating inside, but there are tables and chairs outside. The only beverage they sell is water, but "katty-corner" across the street is the tasting room of a local craft brewery.

We did a tour on the back of an old firetruck in Portland too...that was a fun way to see the city!

When in Boston there are three Wagamama restaurants in the city. This is a chain of Japanese restaurants that are huge in England and other parts of Europe. Excellent food, very informal and decent prices, something different. Good for a lunch spot.

In St. John, we had a great tour with Go Fundy Tours. Also purchased tickets for the Halifax Tattoo as soon as ticketing opened. By doing this, we had great seats, just in front of the officer receiving the salute. It's a nice walk UP to the arena, but easy coming back down. Expect lots of activity around the port as it is Canada Day. In Bar Harbor, Oli's Trolley offers an excellent 2.5 hour tour of Arcadia National Park. Again, recommend purchasing in advance as they sell out with several ships tendering in. Have a great trip. Bob

That looks amazing! And thanks for the info about the shuttle. I need to start writing the details down rather than relying on either the thread or my memory!

Here is a link for the Dog and Pony. We were in a local store and had a conversation with a local and were told about this place as being the place that the locals go to and hangout at. As you can see from our lobster roll we weren’t disappointed. It won’t be hot or serviced with garlic butter if that is what you are looking for. The staff was very friendly and service was great. Beer selection was also fantastic and with most placesthat serve craft beer gave a sample to try before buying.

I took this cruise but I wanted to pop in this thread for anyone who's looking to take this in 2019 and beyond.

For Halifax, I would have just spent the day in the City, and just walked on the boardwalk towards the casino and the fireworks were near Macdonald bridge. The fireworks were very short, like 5 minutes. I heard stories that there was horrible traffic getting to the casino. The fireworks were viewable from the ship. We actually watched it from Revelations or you could watch it outside the ship.

In Boston, there's fireworks are over the place. We watched a bunch of fireworks from the harbor near the Chart House near the Harborwalk. There were off in the distance but there were like 3-4 different fireworks going on that you could see from the harbor. The Boston Pops one was partially viewable from the ship because of the buildings.

The only reason why I'm taking the time was because the Celebrity told us over the phone that you could see it from the ship, then the staff on the ship said that you couldn't and you need to leave the ship or buy the bus shuttle from the ship.
