Balcony Smoking

I will be taking my first Carnival cruise next month and had a question about smoking on the balconies. I am a non-smoker who prefers a smoke-free environment, but on a previous cruise with RCL had a balcony neighbor who liked to smoke. I read somewhere on here that the port side of the ship is designated as non-smoking. Firstly, is this true? When I booked my cabin, I booked starboard side because it wasn't advertised on Carnival's site that port side was non-smoking. My main question is, do you think it would be worthwhile to change my cabin to the opposite side of the ship? If it didn't show that the port side was smoke-free when I booked my cabin, there wouldn't be anything to keep a smoker from booking that side of the ship. Is this supposed to be common knowledge that I'm just now learning about, or did I get misinformation to begin with? Not trying to call out smokers or anything, just would prefer no smoke when resting on the balcony.

Unfortunately the port side thing applies only to public decks and not balconies. I really wish they would instigate this rule shipwide. Would make for a much more pleasant balcony experience. I always seem to end up with a smoker nearby.

Smoking is permitted on all balconies no matter which side you are on. The designated side is only for the common areas

Thanks for the quick responses. That makes sense that it is for the common areas only. It would be a bit difficult to enforce for private balconies (not just for supervision reasons, but practicality and fairness if one side sells out quicker than the other). Maybe things will go well and I'll get neighbors who are non-smokers. Either way, I'm looking forward to a great vacation :-)

All you had to do before booking was not believe what you read here and look in the Carnival FAQ's section to find out the rules....

All balconies and staterooms (except for spa cabins on the Splendor, Dream and Magic) are smoking......

Smoke from neighbors balconies is clearly an issue for many; Carnival is beginning to recognize it with the advent of the "Spa Category" on newer ships. Unfortunately, not yet an option on other ships.

So what we did was book the most forward balcony in a section where the next three staterooms forward of us are window staterooms (8A #4209 Spirit). This way we know there will be no nearby balcony smokers forward of us. We may have a smoker aft of us, but ship is at sea 10 of the 15 days and every night. So we anticipate (hopefully won't be disappointed) that we can enjoy our balcony free of smoke.

This is our 13th Carnival cruise and we've enjoyed many upgrades. But because of our perceived advantages in this location we blocked the stateroom as "no upgrade". Will let you know how it goes!

Let me respond as a dreaded "smoker". You know when we cruise we are always very aware of where the smoking areas of the ship are and adhere to the Line's policy on smoking. Yes we always sail in a balcony cabin and yes we always smoke on the balcony but never in the cabin.

I really take exception to those who have an issue with smokers, outside, 30k+ wind moving across the deck, smoking in allowed areas. You know the ones......the glare, the rolling eyes. Wow...this is a wonderful country we live in. Same thing in the casino which is down to about 3 smoking tables for 4500 guests in the case of the Dream. I cannot tell you how many times on our last cruise that a non-smoker would sit down at a smoking table and then proceed to ask everyone "Do you really mind?" I always graciously pointed out the other 66 non smoking tables available.

Just sayin.....You know I have a real issue with those folks who insist on entering an elevator prior to the guests on the elevator getting off. You know the "ones" I speak of.

Hopefully CCL will recognize the difficulties we are experiencing and make each ship a wide open smoking area and only for those who know elevator etiquette. ;)

i smoke on the balcony, but i put it out if i see my neighbors coming out

Nope, I'll be honest, not me. I smoke too, and it's allowed on the balcony. I will not give up my habitual problem on my paid for balcony for anybody. I'm sorry for those who freak out at such a thing, but it is what it is. Get over it. Or if it's going to bother you that much, save yourself the grief and book an inside. BTW, I will not smoke inside my stateroom.

If we were in port and not moving and my balcony mate asked me really nicely and politely then I would put mine out. If they were like the ones on my last cruise that sat there and complained at the top of their lungs about me smoking on my aft balcony then I smoke more

Since smoking is allowed on the balconies...I would never ask a neighbor not to.

I usually just don't book balcony cabins. And when I do book a balcony, I book the first one.

No way would I ask someone not to smoke in a designated smoking area.

You would be surprised...If it was really ruining your balcony experience and you were really sweet and polite about it then most smokers would be ok with you asking. Now if you were on starboard ship public deck probably not so much but private cabin balcony I would be ok if you asked -- As long as we weren't cruising at 20 knots which would kinda make the request ridiculous -- Know what I mean?

I would never ask someone not to smoke on their balcony, but I REALLY wish Carnival would ban smoking in cabins. I think it's just a matter of time until they do.

The people in the connecting cabin to ours on the Fantasy smoked constantly and it seeped in through the door and I think the bathroom. Newer ships may have better barriers between cabins; I hope so anyway.

I think all ships should ban smoking in cabins but just my opinion. A lot of us smokers won't even smoke in the cabin

I've been on a few cruises and luckily my staterooms never smelled like smoke. I agree with others that if smokers are already being considerate and not smoking in their rooms then why not ban it in there to begin with. I will not be happy if i have a neighbor who smoked in their room and it seaped into mine. I have asthma and cigarette smoke can bring on an attack. I stay away from smoking areas on the cruise and limit my time in casinos as well. IMO all indoor public areas (which most are) should be smoke free and smoking should only be allowed in designated outdoor areas.

not all smokers are aware, or care. I once sat at the aft bar with the little non-smoking tent sign right in front of me when someone sat next to me and lit up. I put my drink down and casually nudged the sign in front of him. He looked down at it and continued to smoke. I asked him if he realized this was a non-smoking bar and he asked me if I realized I was a b!tch.

I agree except for the casino. Carnival is slow to get on board that train. ON NCL ships you may only smoke in the casino and the cigar bar or on deck

Well a smoker can quit but an a-hole will always be an a-hole :D

OMG how rude!!!!

What did you say to that?

I would have spoken to the bartender and made a complaint. You were in a non smoking area. I"ve gotten bolder as i get older so i would not have taken that lightly. I choose not to smoke and try to keep my body as healthy as possible and i refuse to let a smoker pollute my air in a non smoking area.
