Woman gives birth on 'Paradise'

I would say shame on the mother. It is clear the woman violated the cruise line policy and was well past 24 weeks of pregnancy.

I believe the woman should be sued in court and required to pay for the cost of the evacuation. Just think of the impact this horrid woman's decision to cruise had on thousands of people!

While I am glad mother and baby are fine, this is not a heart-warming event that should receive attention, like some would give it. I would rather see the cruise line make an example out of this reckless new mom.

You're funny. The story annoyed me too.

All I can think of is... no epidural!! That poor mother.

Assuming the best in people, I can't help but think that this woman could NOT have guessed that this would have happened or she wouldn't have taken the cruise. That's assuming the best. Also, the crew seemed so happy for this event. What a miracle for them. There's nothing like holding a newborn and to be part of the birth of a child. Congrats to mom and baby and the Carnival nurses and doctors!

I'm so happy for them. This made my day :-)

The mother made a very dumb decision is what she did....babies come early all of the time, even if the due date was a month away, you still never know! My first baby came 10 days early, Once I was 3 months away from the due date, I didn't dare travel anywhere farther than 2 hours from my hospital.

Yes, the birth of a newborn is a beautiful and miraculous thing, however, making a selfish decision that could have put the baby at risk, and also inconvenience thousands of other people because you wanted to go on a cruise, even though the rules state that you can't (being that pregnant) is not.

What would have happened if she would have gone into labor while in port? I guess she would have had the baby in Mexico then, wouldn't she. Then she would have missed the ship, and would have been stuck there. Then what?

I just hope taxpayers are held liable for the bill of the medical evacuation......that's not cool. No epidural? Boo hoo.....that's what happens when you don't think about what your actions may lead to. Just saying........

We were on a Sea Day. The only inconvenience that we had was that the casino and the shops had to close while we were within 3 miles of the port of San Diego.

The birth of a premature baby who had to be emergency evaced fro

a ship isn't a beautiful thing.

Well, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.

I'm sure that the mom, grandma, nurses, doctors, Carnival staff, coast guard and some of the passengers (from what I heard while watching the video) would say that this was a beautiful thing though.

Also, I think lots of mothers of premature babies would take offense to your statement. A lot of babies are born in emergency situations regardless of whose 'fault' it is. They all deserve the same amount of joy and awe that uncomplicated births receive.

Just read all 7 pages of comments - and it amazes me that about 90% of comments are sympathetic, wondering about the name, or gushing that it is great that the baby and mom are okay.

All well and good that mom and babe are doing fine, but no kudos to the woman for a selfish and stupid decision to cruise while very pregnant. The comments about "tax dollars at work" are quite appropriate - whether she had insurance or not, the Coast Guard services aren't free. The new mom is obviously a tool - if the birth would have caused an emergency medical situation that would have caused the loss of a port call for the cruise, would the people still be so positive ?

You can't charge people for stupidity, otherwise the prisons would be jammed even more than they are... Hopefully, though, the baby grows up to be smarter than the mom...

You can give birth to something OTHER than a newborn? lol. :)

It seems to me that the way they are reporting this might encourage more pregnant moms to cruise when they shouldn't. "Oh forget about the rules, that woman gave birth and had lots of positive articles written about her!" John Heald even wrote about her and failed to mention that she had broken the rules.

My bet is most women want to be at home, close to their doctor and hospital. Of course you are right, there are some people might be encouraged but really I think that number is probably quite small.

Not only would I want to be close to home when I had the baby but I would stay home for the next few years also.

Very well said...I too am surprized over all of the positive comments. Breaking the rules is NOT a positive thing people! Sure, everything ended all fine and dandy, but there could have been far worse results in such a situation.

Agreed! I cannot understand why the mother would put herself and her baby at risk like that. Yes, cruise ships have a medical center, but it is not for that type of emergency. So many things could have gone wrong - mother and baby are incredibly lucky.

I can't believe all of the conclusions that people draw!

A good friend of mine was pregnant with her 2nd child. In January she was measuring big and they decided to do an ultrasound. Changed her due date from May 25th to March 13 and her daughter was born, full term, on St. Patricks day.

On the other hand, when I was 5 months pregnant with my 2nd child a lady checking me out at a local grocery store said to me "Wow, you are about to pop..." (word to the wise NEVER say that to a pregnant woman!). I measured about 6 weeks big that entire pregnancy and my son was only 8lbs 13oz.

Every pregnancy is different and it is possible that this mom truly did not think she was breaking any rules. Just sayin'!
