I Don't want Shrek

Recommended Posts

I think this deal with Dreamworks is more about production shows and less about characters roaming the ship. Disney can have onboard shows that are smaller versions of its films, but RCI can't because it doesn't have the licence. Now with Dreamworks, it can have production and ice shows based on Dreamworks films - more variety, bigger budgets, etc. I expect that next year on my Indy cruise there will be a production show based on a Dreamworks film and there will most likely be Dreamworks merchandise in the onboard shops. I seriously doubt that Shrek is going to be stopping by in the MDR to see how dinner is.

You are probably right about this, and it only makes my feelings stronger.

It is turning cruising into a theme park vacation.

Princess will be where we turn. Hope they don't follow the same path...

On our cruise last weekend, the show was "Once Upon a Time" or something like that. I've seen this show before, it's a production show based on fairy tales. On a four night cruise, this was the family show. On the other nights there was a musical act, a comedian and then the farewell show on the last night. So 25% of the entertainment was family-based. How does having a family show make crusing a theme park vacation? Are you saying there shouldn't be any family entertainment?

While you were taking your 24 RCI cruises you got older and now the thought of Shrek disturbs you just as much as the thought of all those oxygen tanks bothered me on Princess. To quote Disney, it's the circle of life!

Won't it only be on 4 ships? Just my opinion, but I'd say just avoid those 4 ships. None of the Radiance, Voyager, Vision, or Sovereign Class will have it.

True, but by choosing the four ships they did, they deny those who do not want the "little green fellow" running around the ship the opportunity of sailing on what RCI has deemed to be the ultimate in cruising experiences. Put him on either Allure or Oasis, one of the Freedom Class, etc.

I personally have no dog in this fight as I will not cruise on the behemoths that have been selected, but to those who want that experience, RCI is being unfair and needs to reconsider.

I had been hoping to try these ships after the initial prices came down but now I want to stay as "far far away" as I can.

I like Dreamworks as much as the next guy but as one poster said, "I don't want them on my cruise ship"

There's already too much of a wait for certain activities, too long a line at things, and enough rugrats for my taste... This is only going to increase that factor. I suppose from a business perspective it makes sense... Having families aboard enables you to double your occupancy by having 4 to a cabin but sheesh.

I agree. We're sailing on the Allure this January (two married couples, no children), and when I saw the announcement, I was a little disappointed. I like Dreamworks, but featuring them one one of the ships instead of both would have been nice.

Sorry. I still don't quite understand the complaint. These ships used to have the Kruze Komics, which most people seemed to be entertained by. Their presence brought a chuckle, but it's not like there were dozens of them all over the ship, eating with you and sleeping with you. I just don't see this pair being much different.

If people want to latch on to this as an excuse to, once again, rag on a cruise line, so be it. I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. The ships they are going to be on are so large, these two would be easily avoided.

Thats funny, I was going to mention them on a previous post then I didn't. They were pretty entertaining. I can remember people on these boards complaining when RCI got rid of them.

This is one thing that I would add though since my previous post to this thread. When we sailed Mariner out of Port Canaveral the Disney ship pulled out just before us. I was watching all the Disney stuff occuring on the upper decks and I can remember saying to my brother that I was so glad not to be on that ship.

I have to think about this issue some more. I suppose it could get to be quite annoying depending on how it is done.

I always find it amusing to read about the Disney ships from people who haven't cruised on them. Yes there are characters, but you have to go find them. We didn't see any at the sailaway on the pool deck, but to date have only been on deck for one or two sailaways...that was for the scenery (Alaska, Hawaii) than anything else. It's not typical of what you see around the ship all the time. But what we did see was beautiful art, hardly any of it cartoonish and gorgeous furnishings and fixtures.

What a lot of people don't realize about Disney is how classy they are. I'd compare it more to QM2 than any other ship we've been on.

It's like any other ship, if you don't want to participate in that activity, don't go to that particular venue. I don't care much to attend cruise ship shows at night, so I rarely go. But the one Disney cruise we did go on, the night time shows while certainly more geared towards family, were the best we've ever seen at sea. The talent was far more talented, the costumes, the sets, everything was absolutely awesome.

There are also adult areas on Disney ships where children are not allowed, just like on many other cruise lines.

I'm another one not into cartoon characters unless I happen to be watching a Shrek or Disney movie, but just like on a cruise with a silly art auction or Bingo, I can just choose not to go to that area.

To be honest with you, I think I'd rather cruise on a Disney ship than the Navigator class again. We have cruised Mariner twice in the last 6 months and have no plans to cruise on that style of ship again. It was like cruising in a shopping mall.

I wasn't knocking Disney. I was commenting on one aspect that I observed. I am glad that Disney is a good fit for you. I don't agree with your comments about the Voyager class ships. I see the royal Promenade differetly that you.

Its all good.

with this post. After December of this year, my wife and I will be Diamond Plus on RCI. We've been on enough cruises to know that RCI already has enough family-oriented entertainment. It's now going "overboard" with Shrek and friends! I believe RCI has a strong marketing push on now for more family travelers and their revenue. Just as another poster stated -- more people in a cabin equals higher capacity and more revenue for them. We don't have anything against children, but we don't want to be part of an overcrowded version of Disney World.

I don't think it's the characters so much. To me it means they want to go in that younger family direction. So more and younger kids, more theming, etc. I have done Disney and I thought it was great but that was when my kids were 4, 7 & 8. Disney has a good product but I won't go again because there are loads of little kids.

I'm sure it's about the demographics but I'm aged out of that category already.

There is plenty of space for adults "only" on the Oasis and Allure...I really don't think it will be much of a problem. I avoid places where many of the children are now, and will continue to do so.

I hope this means that some of RCI's ships will still stay the same, and be void of Disney characters...maybe children will stay away from those. That would be lovely.

When I say children, I do NOT mean all children. Many are well behaved and wonderful. I'm speaking of the spoiled, unsupervised brats that seem to be on every cruise, mucking up the space of other guests. These are the children I avoid like the plague.

We all seem to be missing the point families mean extra bucks! Instead of 8 people in 4 cabins you can have 8 people in 2 cabins, now there are more cabins for people to sail in. As I probably would not sail on one of these ships unless I was sailing with my grand children from a marketing strategy it is quite good & probably will be very profitable.

So, let me get this straight... now they can have 8 people in 2 cabins, doubling their occupancy. SO these monsters may have as many as 8,000 pax on board! NO THANK YOU! Especially if over 1/2 of these are kids.

Bye Bye RCCL! After our B2B, we are NEVER looking back.

DH is disgusted with the thought of the "characterization" of cruising. Whatever happened to providing good food, good service, and docking in exotic ports of call? Now all these ships do is sail the ocean, stop at 1-2 predictable spots, and offer theme-park madness and crowds at every turn.

HappyKS -- my pictures posted on page 1 were from sailaway -- :D -- here is the progression of picture #3, #4 and #5 of that cruise taken on our Disney Wonder sailing. And our Disney Magic sailing had the exact same sailaway....

Hubby holding crazy happy 5 year old -- wooohoooo Mickey

Characters dancing on the stage while we are sailing away...

Look how HOT and uncomfortable the adults look at this display...lol

Have you even bothered to look at the deck plans of those two ships or ar you just posting misinformation? The ships can only hold so many guests. The Oasis and Allure actually have a small amount of cabins that can hold three and four people compared to the number of overall cabins. Families will have to book two cabins. This will not mean more people on board. LMAO at some of the drama on this board.

You folks are aware this isn't a feetwide RCI thing, right? You folks are aware this is only on the larger ships that are already geared toward numerous activities, right? I have to ask, because some of these comments seem to indicate people think all RCI's ships are being painted green, or something.

I don't cruise to be entertained by juvenile themes I need some sea spray and great service, five meals a day and good ports of call. Disney fills the family niche but RCL now wants to compete with Disney? I enjoy seeing families on board but what happened to family time instead of "entertain me every minute". I remember what happened in Las Vegas when they tried to go over board with family themes and see where it got them, back to the old "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". I like RCl enough to have over 24 cruises with them but I'm thinking it's not as a good a match as it used to be. Princess will get a closer look and Celebrity for my cruising dollar after I sail my next 2 bookings with RCL.

Flame away, I'm still allowed my opinion.:D

No flames here....I agree completely! If I wanted to be assaulted by cartoon characters I sail on Disney.

Shrek will be on board, you may see him or you may not, just like you may or may not see friends of Bill W, ice skaters, comedians, people on a flowrider, a parade, the casino.

Amazing...how many times can some of these people leave RCCL?
