I guess what gets me are comments like in this article that said he couldn't believe "Carnival allowed this to happen"....

what does he think.... Carnival is psychic????

It happened, Carnival handled it....end of story....

I am thinking the same thing. When we booked the two upcoming cruises, and as I hear about the violence in Mexico getting worse each day, we have already decided not to get off the ship. I heard if you look rich or nicely clothed, that they will kidnap you and demand money for your return. No thank you. This will probably be out last cruise to Mexico.

Who needs violence on any cruise? I'm glad Carnival put them off the ship! Sets the example for future misfits or those who want to fight.

The violence occurring in Mexico is far, far away from the cruise ports. We love going to Costa Maya and Cozumel. Have done both cruise vacations and land vacations in Cozumel. We will continue to book Mexico itineraries. ☺ ☺

I live in Mexico and there is very little violence. The press loves to have stories of bloody killings and such as shock press. There are a lot more drug related killings in most major cities in the USA. I feel safer in Mexico than I do in the USA.

In responding to the quoted post I would remind this person that it did not happen in Mexico. It was not Mexicans that caused the trouble. I see no reason to not go to Mexico based on the data presented in the post.

Why do you feel compelled to make Mexico responsible for this incident that was caused by Americans on an American ship?

I would be more concerned about getting mugged or caught in the cross fire in Los Angeles or New York City.

This stuff can happen anywhere and on any cruiseline, airline, etc.

We were on the RCCL Sov. of the Seas and there was an "altercation" at the pool. Then one guy runs up to the bar and grabs a knife and threatens someone with it....

That guy ended up in the brig! Royal Caribbean handled it quickly and efficently.

Sorta like saying "I was bringing my bag of hamburgers home and a pack of dogs attacked me and stole em. That's the last time I'll go to Burger King!"

;)

I just heard about this today, from my friend whose travel agent neice was on the ship.

Supposedly there were gangs on the ship and several(I heard 8) people were literally "mugged" and injured by what was described as gangs.

I also heard that lots of kids under 18 were at the adult comedy show...without any adult supervision...that it was just bedlem on the ship.

Sorry for the hijack, but I see you are from Ormond Beach. I lived there for 30 years before moving over to DeLand 7 years ago. What part of Ormond do you live in?

we were on this cruise. from our friends who witnessed this in the dance club, it was caused by a song. one "group" (i don't believe they were gangs as stated earlier) started trouble with another group (both from the NY area). this quickly got out of control and some people spilled into the art gallery. yes, many pictures were damaged as well as flatscreens in the dance club. a guy was knocked out and needed medical assistance...lots of blood. it moved down to our deck (deck 2) as one group looked for the other group. carnival tried to control the problem, but at the time seemed to be short on security according to the witnesses. the people AND thier families were removed in costa maya and one man was escorted off by fbi in port canaveral. after the troublemakers were taken care of, there seemed to be a stronger security presence, as well as many ship officers walking around during the night. i believe carnival made a strong statement and for the remainder of our cruise there were no problems. GOOD JOB CARNIVAL!!! we had a GREAT time regardless of what happened.

And were they wearing a sign saying we're from the NY area(which could be NJ, CONN or NY)

This from a friend who was in the dance club.

You don't really want to see the stas do you? You and I are both embarrassed by mexicos murder rate percentage. Please don't gloss over it .

Not a whole lot of information, but there is a news article regarding the events that transpired here.

Would love to know more, of course, and perhaps more importantly why 1 was turned over to the FBI while 11 were left in Mexico?

Still, very glad Carnival got a handle on it quickly and definitely glad I will be sailing with them again soon.

I live in Central Fla and watched the 5 o'clock news ( Monday 8/16 WFTV Channel 9)and they said everthing that was printed in the link that you provided but they stated that Carnival did arrange flights home for them not sure if this means they paid for the flights or just made sure they where booked on flights out.Other than that nothing new and Kudos to Carnival and all other lines that take care of the major trouble makers. I can't remember who stated it in this thread but Carnival or any cruise line for that matter can not predict how passangers are going to act when on a cruise I feel that if you can not handle your liquor then don't drink. I have also sailed on RCCL and they had just as many partying people on there as Carnival does on there ships. I would sail RCCL again but I LOVE Carnival and it's the best priced for me and my daughter to be able to have mother daughter vacations so don't blame Carnival or any cruise line for the actions of people who can't handle drinking :-)

I was on deck 8 (verandah), the whole family stayed in inside cabins across from me. they were young people from New York, & their parents also. Every night they made quite a bit of noise. on Wed night they got into a fight with one of the security that worked the door at the Calentia club (deck 5),after one of them cut someone with a broken glass, we also heard that they vadalized some art work in the art area next door. That night they were aguring very loudly outside of our cabin, my brother had a cabin right next to mine. we all heard it. In the morning I heard alot of knocking, I heard someone repeating "open the door mame" I went to the door, looked out the peep hole and seen a mass of officers. I opened the door they told me to go inside & keep the door closed. I seen 3 young men. 1 with a large bandage on his head, 1 with a large bandage on his arm, and 1 with a bandage on his lip. The parents were asking to speak to the captain, which they were denied. they were told to pack a bag, they had to get off the ship. There were quite a few of them put off. My family & I seen them at the elevators with their luggage. Later security was showing a picture of a young man to our room steward & telling them to report asap is they spotted him. this was after the ship left Costa Maya. The next day I did see the mom & some of the young ladies still on board. I seen them seeing how there rooms were all across from our. we had 6 balcony cabins, they were in the insides across the hall. When we landed back in Port Canveral. The one they were showing the picture of was arrested by the FBI, my Aunt witnessed this event. There were several rumors on why & who they were fighting. But they were NOT gang members just young men on a cruise with thier family that did some very stupid acts and are now paying for and all the officers that were outside my cabin were males.

I was on this cruise too, and I have to tell you, about 90% of the people onboard did not know what happened until after we left Costa Maya.

When we returned to the ship from Costa Maya, we saw a group sitting at the top of the gangway with luggage (I guess waiting to be escorted off) There were about 10-15, I didn't count, at the time, I didn't care to know anyone's business... my assumption was emergency at home.

We heard from our team head waiter that night that about 30 passengers from NY - Brooklyn and Staten Island (this piqued our interest, because we are Staten Islanders) were put off the ship for fighting in the night club. He said someone was knocked unconscious, and someone had a broken nose. He also told us that ship security escorts them to the airport and makes sure they get on the plane home.

Debarking took forever, we were zone 30 and were not called until almost 11am... tonight, here, is the first time I am hearing about the FBI.

At no time, before or after the incident, did I feel unsafe on the ship, and at no time were we inconvenienced by loud, rude, or rowdy behavior by the large groups that were onboard.
