Just off the Dream!

Recommended Posts

From a passenger: We were on the Carnival Dream sailing 08/07 to 08/14 and heard that a brawl broke out in the dance club around 3:00 a.m. on the morning of the 12th. We heard from passengers and a bartender that the brawl started over a song. It involved so many young people (men and women) that the security on board was unable to handle everyone and had to call in assistance from wait staff and other crew members. The fight spilled over into the art gallery located next door and apparently a $10K painting was ruined with blood spatter. Flat screen tvs were smashed and there was a lot of damage done. We heard that people on the ground were getting kicked in the head by men and women and that one person needed to be revived because he was hurt so badly. We also heard that the crowd spilled out of the dance club and that innocent people were getting punched in the face as they were walking by. The next morning in Costa Maya there were a bunch of people sitting by the side of the ship with all of their luggage as they were kicked off the ship and their relatives were shipped off to Mexican jails. Carnival needs to learn a lesson here and not serve alcohol after a certain time and perhaps shut down the 18+ dance club before 3:00 a.m. Nothing good can come of drunk teenagers at 3:00 in the morning.

My husband and brother played basketball with them and they also all stayed right across from our cabin on Verandah, they told us they were from New York.

We were zone 35(last one) and I hadnt thought of that, but I quess the arrest by the FBI was probably the reason it took us so long to get off. It was about 11:30 when we got off the ship. Our driver from Travelynx said he witnessed the arrest

Hundreds of thousands of people cruise that ship alone every year and because of one incident you want to shut the club down early because 'nothing good can come of it'?

we were on this cruise. from our friends who witnessed this in the dance club, it was caused by a song. one "group" (i don't believe they were gangs as stated earlier) started trouble with another group (both from the NY area). this quickly got out of control and some people spilled into the art gallery. yes, many pictures were damaged as well as flatscreens in the dance club. a guy was knocked out and needed medical assistance...lots of blood. it moved down to our deck (deck 2) as one group looked for the other group. carnival tried to control the problem, but at the time seemed to be short on security according to the witnesses. the people AND thier families were removed in costa maya and one man was escorted off by fbi in port canaveral. after the troublemakers were taken care of, there seemed to be a stronger security presence, as well as many ship officers walking around during the night. i believe carnival made a strong statement and for the remainder of our cruise there were no problems. GOOD JOB CARNIVAL!!! we had a GREAT time regardless of what happened.

was snooki involved???

ROFL...I was thinking on the same lines...somebody has been watching to much Jersey Shores and decided it would be cool to act like Snookie and her Jersey Thugs...:D

The thing that kills me is Snooki and most of her pals are from New York and Jersey gets the bad wrap! Thats why all us Jersey folks are so against the show. Only what we call citdiots (city - ots) are what they act like....people from NY or North Jersey towns! Once you are south of the Big Parkway bridge nobody is like that.

Embarrassing, isn't it?

I'm originally from NJ. Lived in Bergen County and had a summer house in Lavallette. (and ok, we DID say "down the shore" :) ) but I never met anyone like those people, either....

I live in Mexico and there is very little violence. The press loves to have stories of bloody killings and such as shock press. There are a lot more drug related killings in most major cities in the USA. I feel safer in Mexico than I do in the USA.

In responding to the quoted post I would remind this person that it did not happen in Mexico. It was not Mexicans that caused the trouble. I see no reason to not go to Mexico based on the data presented in the post.

Why do you feel compelled to make Mexico responsible for this incident that was caused by Americans on an American ship?

I would be more concerned about getting mugged or caught in the cross fire in Los Angeles or New York City.

It's part of what's wrong with our world. It is a misunderstanding of the problem and miscommunication of the same. Amazing

Oh Please. I guess the bloods and the crips are running out of territory.

"Welcome passengers, if you're in an even numbered room you're in the bloods gang, and if you're in an odd numbered room your in the crips! Let's see which gang has the hairiest chest!"

K

Well damn, I'm in an even number cabin and have always felt red to be one of my favorite colors....oh well, hubby is a retired USAF Con so, naturally, he likes blue. Guess he wins this one. So do we bring brass knuckles and numchucks (sp?) or just sneak or killer, 18 y/o, miniature poodle aboard and tell them he's a service animal?:p.

I guess I need to edit my time clock to read no family or friends along but planning a welcome aboard party for all the gangs joining us!

We were on this ship as well and were also awoken by the ruckus in the Main deck hallway and peering out our peepholes. (We were in 2314 and 2318.) We heard one lady repeatedly telling someone "You're not the only one hurt, he got stabbed with a fork!" Same lady, presumably talking to security "Those guys are dangerous; you need to get them off this ship. I don't feel safe." She probably said it at least 5 times.

Then in Costa Maya, I went to the pursers desk about 11 am and witnessed a couple and their sons (late teens / early 20s) come down and request to talk to security. The lady at the pursers desk asked if they had been involved in the incident in the disco. They replied that they had been witness to it and had been hit with a shoe. They also said that Carnival's security in the Disco consisted of two individuals and that while they had done everything they could, the guys involved were like "6'4 and 300 lbs" and there really wasn't much that only two security officers COULD do. I later saw the boys signing something and appeared to be receiving a stern talking to from security.

It was pretty crazy that night.

If there's this big "melee"....how does one know who really did what?

No one is going to "take credit".....and we are innocent until proven guilty.

Although I am in total, 100% agreement with "tossing them off in Mexico"...it is possible that they could have tossed off the wrong passengers.

Being stabbed/hurt does not necessarily make you "the victim".

Sorry, "innocent until proven guilty" is not the way it works on cruise ships. If you are expecting trial by a jury, you are not going to get it. The sovereign is the Captain and he acts in the best interest and safety of the ship. If this is not acceptable to anyone, they should not get on a cruise ship.

I'm not challenging this....or the captain's authority.

Just saying....in a big melee...so much is going on...it's very likely that those "assumed to be guilty" may not be the actual instigators.

And...how can they put off the "cabin mates" who just may have been sleeping.

I think there will be more to come.........

Susan and Chuck...switch to the Dream and go cruising with Mike and Laurie and all the crazies gang...They great and fun folks :)You'll have a ball!!!

Back to topic...Glad Carnival handled this quickly. It's hard to separate who's who in these incidents. I'm sure some of the "victims" were part of the problem too. There's a thread on this board about songs that remind you of cruising... I always do a playlist of music that fits the cruise itinerary. Would love to know which song sparked this melee so I can avoid putting it on my ipod playlist.

I'm a patent attorney, not an admiralty attorney (however, in Britain, I could engage in both admiralty and patent cases, as they are heard by the same court...go figure!), but I know that most crimes onboard during travel in international waters can be prosecuted under the laws of the ship's country of registry. I believe also, however, if the captain or ship's master permits law enforcement authorities of a certain country entry onto his ship, they can claim jurisdiction.

BTW, not to hijack the post, but Mark, I just read your post -- I can't believe that the Dream (and therefore likely also not the Magic) doesn't have an adults-only pool! That's one of the things my DW and I truly enjoy about the Miracle and Legend.

If they're still serving alcohol at 3:00 a.m. (which I believe they do) the tendency for people to be drunk and out of hand is pretty high. If there are people having a bloody brawl "over a song" that pretty much tells me things are out of hand. Ridiculous.
