Our First Cruise - Just got back from the Destiny!

Well got home this morning from a 4 day cruise to Key West and Cozumel. We (my boyfriend and I) travelled with another couple. Here are my overall impressions of the cruise:

The ship - Not having much to compare it to, I thought it was very nice, a little older in some areas, but clean. The Destiny was nicer than I expected. The ship had very little motion, hardly felt like we were moving most of the time, so no seasickness for anyone.

Our cabin - We had an inside aft cabin on deck 7 empress. It was roomy enough, clean and more than fine...our friends were right next to us. The thing that got to me was the pitch darkness of the morning, we overslept every day (i finally had to set my alarm on my cell phone) My BF liked the darkness and said it helped him sleep...I think i would do a window or balcony next time though...however I really liked deck 7...we took stairs mostly as elevators took forever...so just 2 flights down to the casino or club and 2 flights up to the lido deck, buffet and pool.

The people - Not what I expected, it was a very young cruise, mostly ppl in their 20's and 30's, a lot of bachelor parties, "girls" trips, "guys" trips, singles and fun couples; very few sr citizens, families or small children...it was definately a "party" cruise and we went with the flow, ended up partying, drinking, gambling and dancing all 4 nights. Met a lot of friendly people and new friends. I will add that the few small children there were very well behaved. For the most part (except a few drunken ppl), ppl were courteous and happy. Oh and if you're wondering, our ages are 39 and 40 and our friends are late 20's.

Food - MDR dinners were terrific, enjoyed everything we ate. Loved the pumpkin soup and onion soup, as well as main courses...BF loved the prime rib and chocolate melting cake. We ate breakfast at the poolside buffet. The Sun and Sea lines were crazy long. It was fine and hit the spot, just what we thought it would be, the food is not a big priority for vacations, so we were content. We ate lunch at the deli once and it was very good (try the reuben). The BF had an ice cream cone like 2 or 3 times a day lol....we missed dinner when we got in from Cozumel, so we took a nap and ended up having pizza at 11 pm instead. Oh and the sushi, I had heard it was not good, but we really liked it! We ate it 3 nights, great 5 pm snack as we always had a light lunch if at all....

Evening Entertainment - Comedy club was great, very funny comedians, I definately recommend it...The casino was fun too, we didnt even plan to gamble at all, but spent a little time at roulette thanks to the $5 match play cards when you buy a classic cocktail..Sports bar was a big hit for Sunday football, packed w/ ppl watching the games, fun and lively..The Disco was awesome, packed every night, we loved the music, kept us dancing every night...the crowd was very young and energetic and loved to dance...the club was a pleasant surprise for us.

Alcohol - The drinks were not any more expensive than were used to living in S Fla, we drank about 2 drinks each every night. We dont drink "fruity" drinks poolside or much alcohol during the day at all, except a beer by the pool one day, so bar bill wasnt that bad, $150 total. Mostly had long island ice teas and vodka and red bulls. The 2 bottles of wine we brought helped. I will admit we brought a small amount of Jagermeister with us to enjoy Jagerbombs with friends in our cabin (fun way to meet ppl too, but it was gone after the first night lol), but we felt too guilty smuggling anything more than that.

Steward/Waiters - The most memorable was our Cabin Steward (Dennis). He was great. He filled our 2 ice buckets twice a day, every day. Always helpful and available, we tipped him well, he deserved it. Our MDR waiter, Carlos, was great too, very nice. Him and another waiter were very helpful in finding a hard to find drink for my BF that he wanted (Jameson and Pickle Juice). We LOVED the waiter dance, it was cute, and fun to watch during dessert...everyone really got into it...our dining room (Galaxy) was very "lively",, especially the last night, where it seemed there were 20 bdays, with cake and singing..including 2 at our table.

The Pool - The central point of daytime fun, it was packed every day...chair hogging was not too bad..we managed to find 1 lounger that we shared one day...by the time we got back from the Twister slide (how fun is that!), the chairs next to us opened up, so we each had one. The other day we spent at the pool we were up on a higher level but we did manage to find 2 loungers. The music is loud, the pools and hot tubs are crowded, but it was a fun place to get some sun and cool off in the pool. We didnt spent more than 2 hours there both times we went as it was just a 4 day cruise.

Elegant Night - Everyone seemed to participate in this, I had read that ppl dont get very dressed up, but that was not the case here...it seems that the younger ones (college aged/20's) dressed up nicer than everyone else, suits and beautiful dresses...for the most part, men all wore dress shirts, tie and dress slacks and women wore nice sundresses or cocktail dresses. I only saw maybe 2 polo shirts but nothing less than that. It was a fun night and very enjoyable to do as a first time cruiser.

Shopping onboard - We checked out the shops a few times and the prices were not that bad really...there were some sales that were good, especially on duty free liquor...we even looked at engagement rings (both of us couples actually) for ideas! We did end up purchasing some pretty earrings and BF bought a very nice tie...my friend bought a very cute Guess handbag...

Key West - Well it was super crowded getting off the ship, and the trolley we had to wait for to get off the military base we docked at was a bit of a pain to wait for, and i will add that it was super hot, we sweated like crazy....we only spent about 2 hours there and went back a bit early to avoid the crowds...weve all been to KW many times so not a huge draw. We shopped a bit and had a beer and oysters at the Hogs Breath. We still had a good time, but needed to cool off at the pool after.

Cozumel - Got off the ship with ease, grabbed a cab for $13 and headed to Paradise Beach....the good: Very nice beach club, nice sand, drinks were good, the ceviche and guacamole/chips were delicious, waiter was awesome...prices werent bad...they charged $2 for loungers and $12 for use of water toys...I dont think it was worth it, as although we had a lot of fun on the slides and climbing stuff, we were not able to snorkel as the ocean was murky, dirty and disgusting...we had to shower twice to get all the crud off us. That was the only drawback, otherwise it was a very nice beach club and a great time. After we went back to the pier and went shopping a bit. We got back on the ship very early at like 6:30 pm and took a nap for a few hours, the hot sun did us in lol....

Overall, we had a terrific time, we can't wait to cruise with Carnival again. My vacation time is booked for the next year, but we want to squeeze in a 3 night cruise to the Bahamas in the next few months. I loved it and can't wait until the next time!

Glad you enjoyed your first cruise - and you do sound almost like a seasonsed cruiser - very impressive! :D

Going to try Paradise Beach this time so appreciated your comments.....what time did you get there? How crowded was it? Any problems getting loungers? (did you see any shade and/or available umbrellas?)

Have never been to KW and really lookingn forward to it? Did you perchance see any 'wandering chickens'??

Also wondering if you were aware of the Farewell party (free drinks) on the last night? I believe it is on the 'cozumel' day? Did you know about it? Did you attend? And if so what was it like?

Thanks,

Good to hear you enjoyed you trip! Not too many children onboard this time of year (school).Seems a lot of the 3 and 4 day Cruises are more party goers trips to me.

Yes it totally was, I wasnt expecting that...we mainly went for the cruise experience and to go to Cozumel...we can party for a lot less here in Ft Laud...it was supposed to be a relaxing vacation and I ended up sleeping all day today to recover....

Hi there and thanks...I learned a lot on this board and I felt like I knew more about cruising and our ship than my friends (who have all cruised before, including my BF).

We got to Paradise about 2 pm...it was not super crowded and there were plenty of loungers, we got loungers right up front next to the massage area. There were plenty of umbrellas, we had 2 of them for 4 of us.

We slept in so only spent 2 hours in key west....if you've never been, try to get off the ship when it docks at 8 am so you can enjoy your short day as its only 6 hours....there is a lot to see and do, so you will love it..and yes we saw plenty of chickens and roosters!

We didnt even know about a farewell party or free drinks..I had heard of it from this board but if it happened we missed it. However, there was a Mexican fiesta at 11:30 after we sailed from Cozumel..we didnt go but we saw a lot of ppl heading there since most missed dinner times as we didnt leave Coz until 10 pm.

So glad that you had a good time!

Very nice review, brought back memories for me of our trip with the Destiny.

Our(dh and myself) first cruise was with the Destiny 2 years ago. We really didn't know what to expect. But we are easy going people and just thought that we'd make the best of whatever. We were PLEASANTLY surprised with the ship and had such a blast. We didn't go to the Club, but I wished we would have. We were trying to be good and get plenty of rest.lol

We are going on another cruise next month with the Carnival Liberty! I would love to do one at least every other year if possible. Just nice to get away from it all.

Thanks so much for the info and response! We usually do Nachi Cocum when in Cozumel but seeing as we would only be docking at 1 pm it did not seem 'cost effective'....so will be heading out to PB and glad to hear it wasn't that crowded and shade was available.

...and yes I have my heart set on seeing those chickens (and roosters) all over Key West (can you tell I'm a city girl and don't get out much?:D)....and will definitely be heading out early to see all there is to see (and have some key lime pie on a stick too!)

Welcome to what will be your new addiction. No seriously, it already started, you've planned your next cruise already. :) Be warned it'll only get worse. Squeeze in that time for even those short cruises!

Glad you had a blast and welcome to the addiction club. Wait till you take a 5day or longer, you think you had a blast with a 4day, thats just the tip of the iceburg, but that was the perfect amount of days as a first cruise!

Thank you for your thorough honest review I am sailing on Sept 30 same itinerary.I am from Miami priest and the hard rock is the place to be.I was worried about all the negative reviews about the ship being old and worn out and the big tv in the room LOL.think you for posting the review.

Thanks for a very useful review ! Glad you enjoyed your first cruise...and planning your next one...way to go

Not sure I can get over the "Jamison and Pickle Juice " LOL>> but you have to admit they really do try to please the customer haha

the Customer Appreciation party is the last night...listed in the Fun Times

BUT it does not say the magic words :Free Drinks: so many people do miss it but next time you guys will know

I also live in South Florida and I love our ships here, Imagination is very nice for a 3 night cruise

Now...here I come with my begging LOL...do you by any chance have the "Fun Times" for the 4 night Destiny Cruise?? I am really looking for them

thanks in advance

@ Tattoos - that was really a draw back, they said was dirty since a storm had passed thru a few days before...it felt disgusting under my feet, mushy and our guys had to pull us in on a raft lol...we got all kinds of black muddy stuff in our swimsuits ew!

@sharecruises - I gagged when i tried that Jameson and pickle juice, i think its a southern thing...ugh! Did you see the pic i posted of it? And no we didnt keep the Fun Times, sorry I had SO much paperwork i thru them away, I wish I would have kept them, darn! We will try Imagination for a 3 day cruise to Nassau next time.

@Lakers - We live close to the Hard Rock and go there often, the crowd in the Destiny night club was similar to the Hard Rocks party crowd. The ship didnt look worn out to me, but I've never been on another ship, so looked fine...and we had a flat screen tv in our room, didnt really watch it...our friends in next cabin had a big ole tv though.

@Mr Fun in sun - Yup, I would love to do a 5 or 7 nt cruise...with all the trips we have booked for the next year, we wont be able to do this until at least Dec 2011...I'm going to look at itineraries...a 3 nt to Nassau can probably be squeezed in before that though.

Welcome back from the Destiny. While she was not my first ship, she was OUR (my wife and I) first ship. She was our Honeymoon ship so she obviously holds a very special place in our hearts.

Same here! This was my very first cruise, he's cruised a few times before, but it was OUR first cruise together, so very special!

Thanks for your review. We are cruising this same itinerary on Jan 6 and can not wait. We have done RCCL twice, and loved it. This will be our first Carnival cruise! Did I mention that we can't wait!

Glad you had a good time, and enjoyed your first cruise. Now time to book that next one. :D
