What to do in Alesund?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used the HOHO buses in Alesund? We are considering this option and would love feedback.

Not sure if there is a HOHO bus in Alesund. It's a fairly small town and its main downtown is fairly compact and very close to the docking area for most ship. Easy for doing your own walking around, seeing the sights, interesting architecture, etc. We did a rental car to go reach Runde Island, stop at the great mountain-top vista over the town and area, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Yes, we travelled on the bus this year in May.

Found it very Good and it stops were the Ship Docks.

Another reason we took the bus is that we didn't fancy walking up the steps up to the viewing point over Alesund.

In my opinion this is the Best and Easiest option :)

You get some terrific views from here and the weather was just Perfect.

Here is the itinerary for the bus:

Stop 1 - Cruise Terminal

Stop 2 - Sunnmøre Museum

Stop 3 - Fjellstua

Stop 4 - Rica Parken Hotel

Stop 5 - Tourist information

Stop 6 - Dronning Sonjas Plass / City Center

Stop 7 - The Art Nouveau Centre / City Center

Stop 8 - Ålesund Fisheries Museum & Clarion Bryggen Hotel

Stop 9 - Ålesund Church

Stop 10 - Ålesund Aquarium / Atlanterhavsparken

Even tho as members has said that the town in compact and easy to walk. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for those not able to walk the whole town.

The bus also stops at the open air museum, the Aquarium and of course Fjellstua/Mt. Aksla not easy to get to by foot or would require a taxi.

  • 1 year later...
Yeah, I would be confused to:D They are the same, sorry:D

This should be the right route from Geiranger to Ålesund:

http://www.viamichelin.com/web/Itineraires?strStartLocid=32NDF0Nm40NjIxNjEwY05qSXVNVEF4TnpVPWNOeTR5TURjeU9RPT0=&strDestLocid=31NDFzeWQxMGNOakl1TkRjeE1UWT04Tmk0eE5UVTM=&strStep1Locid=31NDF0M3YxMGNOakl1TWpZd09EYz1jTnk0eE56SXhNZz09&intItineraryType=1&caravaneHidden=false&vh=CAR&strVehicle=0&itineraryCarType=0&itineraryFuelType=0&isFavoriseAutoroute=false&isAvoidPeage=false&isAvoidVignette=false&isAvoidLNR=false&isAvoidFrontiers=true&dtmDeparture=18%2F04%2F2011&distance=km&devise=1.0|EUR&indemnite=&carbCost=1.3&autoConso=6.8&villeConso=6&routeConso=5.6

These 2 routes will take you in a circle of the area and NOT repeat anything.

Where you read on the map:

Series of bends for 1.5 km 2 km 00h02

Series of bends for 0.7 km 4.5 km 00h06

Steep hill downwards 0.3 km 4.5 km 00h06

Steep hill downwards 0.7 km 10 km 00h15

Steep hill downwards 3.5 km 11 km 00h16

Steep hill downwards 7 km 18 km 00h23

Series of bends for 1 km 19 km 00h24

Series of bends for 0.5 km 20 km 00h26

Series of bends for 0.2 km

this is actually the Eagle road - make sure you stop at the top by the view point.

Lars

We have really been reading all the posts thus far. We are arriving Alesund May 13 2015 and in Geiranger May 14th on RCCL Serenade of the Seas. My Question ... we would like to rent a car and drive the circle from Alesund to Geiranger.

Is this the route to see the most.

Ålesund - Magerholm with ferry to Sykkylven over Stranda fjellet to Hellesylt..ferry Hellesylt to Geiranger...Geiranger, eagle road, Eidsdal. Eidsdal to Linge by ferry. Linge to Liabygda, Stordal, Sjøholt, Spjelakvik and Ålesund.

Or should we NOT do this because we will be in Geiranger the next day? In Geiranger we plan to take a bus to Mtn. Dalsmibben and than get off the bus and hike to the Storeterfossen Falls. Walking back to the town after seeing the falls? Do you think the snow may decide which rout we take?

We have done the long circle from Alesund to Geirainger and back to Alesund (in a long port day) and loved the entire trip. But if your ship is actually cruising the Geirainger you will duplicate part of that trip (the cruise or ferry on the fjord) which does not make a lot of sense. But that road leading up the mountain out of Geirainger is simply amazing and the views will stay with you forever. So if you do not do the driving trip from Alesund, try to arrange a tour, or some other way to get up that mountain when you are in Geirainger.

Hi Bev - as wonderful as the drive to Geiranger is there is no point doing the long drive when you are in Geiranger anyway.

I would suggest driving to see the Path of the Trolls/Trollstigen or Hjørundfjord with the vilage of Øye.

The weather and snow will decide if the roads are open. All the major Tourist roads usually are open mind May so you might be in luck 😃
