What to do in Alesund?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Its just fun:)love to do it! I hope you will have a great cruise and a wonderful day in Ålesund. I wish I would come with you guys but as we are opening this new baby (read hotel) July 6 we are swamped with work:)

You mean June, not July, right? How much should we expect to pay for a beer in Alesund? Are there any Norway brews? What's on tap?

BTW, I am curious about family in Cuba.

No:) I do mean July:)

Yes, there are many many Norwegian breweries...Hansa, Ringnes, Mack, Tou...are among the largest. I prefer microbreweries. The onse to look out for are: Nøgne O, Kinn, Atna, Aegir....The list do go on.

You will find the largest breweries on tap. Only specialist bars have micro brews on tap.

We will have a beer bar:)

The price for a beer is around $10 in a restaurant/bar....but you will get more than a bottle...usually a large glass is 0.4 or 0.5.

I am married to a Cuban so my mother in law etc is in Cuba....They are the sweetest people and we get to see them every other year or so....Actually, I dont mind having them on the other side of the world:D:D (nah, kidding)

You should have been here today: the weather is in the mid 70Fs and no clouds....perfect weather:) Fingers crossed the rest of the spring and summer will be like today.

Glad you asked about beer in Norway. Good and refreshing there, but not cheap. More info, pictures below.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

In Bergen’s Hanseatic warehouse area, this folk music group is entertaining as people sit outside, drink beer (at $13.25 each) and enjoy the great weather day.:

Just the name of "Arctic" sounds cool as a name for a beer. Get it in Norway! We had the Hansa beer in Bergen. Hansa is Norway's second most popular in sales and is brewed in Bergen. Mack's brewery is located near Tromsø and is considered the world's northernmost brewery. Beer in Norway has a long history, going back at least 1000 years. Until around 200 years ago no farm was complete without a brewhouse.:

Lars,

here is a strange question. Some friends are also going on our cruise, but do not want to drive with us to Runde and go for a hike to see the birds, etc. He's got a bad knee and has trouble on uneven terrain. However, they would really love to see puffins! Are they around the shore in Alesund, nearby? They are also considering the tour to Fiske and Godoy (despite your advice), are there any puffins out there?

And thanks again for your advice on the fast boat and car rental. We are all set with that.

No strange questions but plenty of strange answers:D

I am sorry to say but puffins can only be found at Runde......unless someone knows something I dont:)

If your friend find it difficult to walk on uneven terrain then a tour is perfect for them. Most of the streets in Ålesund has cobble stone.

To see the puffins on Runde Island involves not only "getting there" by car and the limited roadways there' date=' but then taking a boat around to the other side to see where they are actually located at. Maybe you can hike over the mountain to get there, too. That was our experience when there on our adventure from Alesund. We didn't have the time that day to get the boat and go around to there. Fortunately, we got to see hundreds of thousands of puffins at the bird island near the North Cape. Below are a couple of puffin visuals. [b']Cute, cute birds!!! [/b]

Here, the puffin is looking left, allowing a different angle to see their unique beak during our visit near the North Cape.:

This is a large flock of white birds with their different coloring at the top.:

BirdRockWhiteLtHead.jpg

These various birds, including the puffins, were not just filling the cliffs and water, but the air, also. One of the eagles appears to be in the air. It was like a scene out of a Hitchcock film. They were not threatening us. Just busy getting food and living their lives.:

Lars and Terry,

we are going early enough that we should be able to take the boat tour - we hope. If not, all of us will be puffin-less!

Thanks for your replies. We will alll enjoy different areas that day.

Hi

We'll be in Alesund on 31st May which is pretty much before the majority of tours are up and running for the holiday season. As our options are limited and we will have our 11 year old DD with us, we are thinking of going to the Atlantic Sea Park. Does anyone know if there is a bus that runs from Alesund to the Sea Park and where we would catch it from?

Thanks in advance

Debbie:)

Try this schedule:

scroll all the way down until you see "Akvariebuss".

your ship will dock at or next to Storneskaia - its a few minutes walk from the pier to the bus stop.

Lars, read all your posts, well, most of them. Helped make up our mind about this port. We'll rent a car and head out for Gieranger. If you have some time, can you post links to the Magerholm-Orsneset, Hellesylt-Gieranger, and Eidsdal-Lige ferries, I didn't see them and can not seem to navigate backwards from the links posted. We are really excited about this, and are very grateful for all the information you have shared.

The links are posted by boeckli. Let me know if you have any problem finding the right schedule.

Another option if the ship is staying in Ålesund for 12 hours is to do the Hurtigruten fromm Ålesund to Geiranger. The ship departs Ålesund at 930am and arrives Geiranger at aprox 130pm. (cruising the fjords)

Disembark in Geiranger and take the bus tour arranged by hurtigruten back to Ålesund. Arrival in Ålesund will be at aprox 6pm.

Here is a link to hurtigruten:

http://hurtigruten.us/norway/

If this is an option I would arrange fjord cruise and tour before travelling.

l.myren We had a great time in your lovely town. The "train" ride was delightful and the view was grand. I looked for your hotel, but didn't see it until we were having dinner in the dining room; it was behind our ship and I totally missed it from our cabin and from the ground. I would have liked to have met you. Thank you, again, for the great information.

Glad your trip went well. Alesund is a very enjoyable town with lots of nice, interesting, nearby options. For those going there, they should plan ahead and consider their many good options.

Hiltner is back and has posted a few times since returning. So glad he had a good trip and we can't wait to get to Norway ourselves! Hope he sees this! :o

Hank...Still hoping that you will chime in to let us know whether you made it to Geirangerfjord in a rental car...

We are hoping to make it there and would love to hear about how it went with the ferries, the timing, etc. At least one other family on our roll call is planning the same adventure. We'd love to hear from you! :)

Thanks!

Hlitner or anyone else:

Now that the Baltic / Northern Europe cruise season is well underway, has anyone been to Alesund this summer? It would be great if you could share your experiences. We are planning to drive to the Geirangerfjord and wondered if Hank (Hlitner) or anyone else has tried this.

car hire alseund. where did you pick the car up from? port or in town? cost?

thanks

We rented from Budget where we got a very small car for 487 Kroner (about $90). The Budget site is actually handled inside a 7-11 Store (10 - 15 min ez walk from the ship) which is very convenient since you can fill the tank right at the 7-11 upon return. We also noticed that Avis had an office next door. Keep in mind that this is Norway where gas costs around $12 a gallon. Our car was small (had a 6 speed manual shift) with a 1.3 liter engine but it was perfect for the 2 of us and handled the steep grades with no problem.

Hank

P.S. The pier is Alesund is located right in town.

We would also like to visit the Alnes lighthouse...how can we get there without going on the Ship tour? We also don't want to rent a car.

Thanks...

Appreciate Hank's update. Glad things went well. Know that 7-11 location well! That's the site we used for our car rental from there. It is an easy walk from the ship docking location. Does it still look like on the inside as my picture below shows?

The only options are the bus or a taxi.

The easiest and most expensive would be taxi.

You can catch the bus from close to where the ship docks.

You catch the bus from Ålesund to Valderøy (Ytterland). Change there for the bus to Godøy/Alnes.

You can also take the boat from Ålesund to Valderøy and then bus to Godøy/Alnes.

This link and search site will give you the bus routes from Ålesund to Alnes.

http://www.177mr.no/

It doesnt seem like the search excepts Alesund but only ÅLESUND.

Copy and paste into the search engine and you should be fine.

The option for Alnes is ALNES BEDEHUS or ALNES SKULE.

If you have any problems please let me know.

Very helpful and much appreciated...

How much do you think a taxi would cost ? ( an approximation)

Thanks

Kim

Below are the fares from one taxi company.

The drive from Ålesund to Alnes will take approx 20 minutes one way.

It depends how much time you would like to spend at Alnes. Would 20 minutes be enough to see the lighthouse.??

For me, I would say 20 minutes is a bit rushed because when you are there you might want to walk around the village - Take it all in.

I would suggest to spend 45 minutes-1 hour at Alnes lighthouse.

Sightseeing tours (suggestions - from centre of Aalesund):

Fjellstua tour, inclusive waiting until 30 minutes.

Sunnmøre museum tour, incl. waiting until 30 min.

Atlantic Park aquarium tour, inclusive waiting until 30 min.

Giske church tour, inclusive waiting until 20 min.

Alnes lighthouse tour, inclusive waiting until 15 min.

One of options- up to 1 hour:

Up to

4 passengers

NOK 685, -

Up to

8 passengers

NOK 1.050, -

Up to

11 passengers

NOK 1.375, -

Up to

16 passengers

NOK 1.900, -

combination of these options up to 3 hours:

<

4 passengers

NOK 2.000, -

<

8 passengers

NOK 3.300, -

<

11 passenger

NOK 4.000, -

<

16 passengers

NOK 4.700, -

You can contact the taxi company using this email address:
