One of our favorite things about cruising is to be completely unplugged. We don't look at the newspapers and we enjoy being away from the 24hr a day news blasts. The big screen takes that away from us. We were on the Splendor when the earthquake in Japan happended so that coverage was on the big screen pretty much all the time. Not very relaxing, I felt.

I agree. I don't care for them at all

-and the last thing I want to do while on a cruise, is watch TV or a movie.

Not only that, but you can hardly see the stupid thing during the day!

They should be turned off at 2 or 3 a.m. when no-one's even watching any more

and not turned on again until sunset/dark-enough for them to be properly visible.

Why run them 24/7, when the only real practical, useful time

is 6:30 p.m. until maybe 2 a.m.

I like them! We enjoyed watching movies at night from the lounge chair or hot tub. And we watched a bit of Monday Night Football too. I really didn't notice it much during the day. I think I spent some time at the adults only area while my kids were in Camp, so the tv wasn't an issue for us.

We had the opposite experience on our Freedom cruise.

While docked in Jamaica on a brutally sunny day, we had come back to the ship after an hour or so in Jamaica (never go there again) and they were showing Iron Man on the big screen at noon.

I was stunned at how clearly you could see the screen under a ridiculously bright caribbean sun.

I took a couple of pictures of the screen and even they came out clear as day.

I love the screens, but I'd love to see them utilized more like how they are on Princess. The Movies under the stars there was great! They had blankets and popcorn available, and everyone crowded up on deck every night to watch the movies. It was quite a nice experience!

It is very intrusive on Carnival with the Cruise Directors AM and PM shows blaring out from the loudspeakers. On Princess, there are separate pool areas and you can avoid movies, concerts, or whatever else they are showing on the screens.

We loved the Seaside Theater! The movies at night were awesome and we really liked the concerts that are shown during the day. But the best part was sitting in the jacuzzi with my sons (12 & 14) and watching the World Series...even if the Phillies lost.

It was nice at lunch during the day to have the music going on the tv. It was no more intrusive than a band playing. We watched the hairy chest contest during that cruise. We did not make it to see any movies under the stars though, too busy in the casino and other stuff :D. We were on the Dream and loved everything.

it's not the screen size or locale that bothers me and DW loves the movie night on deck. It's the repeat of all the commercial garbage and CD morning yaps and volume level during the day that drives me away from the Lido pool areas.
