Is this possible?

Just wondering if this is possible...Can you book a Hawaii cruise from San Diego, disembark at the first port, stay a couple weeks in Hawaii, and then embark again to go back to San Diego?

But no.

No, the Passeger Vessel Services Act prohibits sailing from one US port to a different US port without a stop at a distant foreign port. There are no distant foreign ports in North America.

However, you could embark in Vancouver, stay as long as you like and sail back to Vancouver, if you could find a cruise line willing to let you do it. You would most likely have to pay for two full round-trip cruises.

That would violate the Passengers Service Act. HAL being a non US vessel would be transporting you to another US destination without visiting a Distant foreign Port. While many wish it can be done I doubt we will see this law ever changed :o

it is against the law.... its called the Jones Act that a non-american flagged ship with an non american crew, can't carry passengers from one US port to another. It was fostered by the unions to protect jobs.

That also goes for cargo too and one reason things in Hawaii cost so much . MAny times it has been tried to be repealed but the union has the politicians on their payroll.

NCL actualy re registered one if its ships because of this, but it was a disaster... financialy .

If you did you would be faced with a huge fine and the ship too!

We here in Hawaii would love to have an option other than airplanes...

Wrong act, BTW. And you can go by non-US ship between ports e.g. Ft. Lauderdale to San Diego - because it would stop at a distant foreign port (South America or ABC islands).

NCL used that ship in Hawaii only and due to lack of demand reflagged and moved it away from Hawaii. It did not sail between the mainland and Hawaii AFAIK.

Incorrect - the ship is fined, not the passenger.

NCL did offer a San Fran one way cruise several times a year several years ago

Why did NCL re-flag... bcause Senator Inoue blocked their application unless they fe flagged as US and hired Hawaiian crew. NCL was held Hostage so to speak.

I seem to recall a immigration fine of the passenger as well for illeagle act as well as the ship...some one told me this once....?

The ship is fined, and then they in turn normally charge the passenger(s).

Sorry to hijack the thread, but what about this? :)

We're on the 24 day Best of Baltic cruise in September, and on one of the stops we overnight in Lisbon, Portugal.

However, it's a short stay and we'd like to stay one more day in Portugal, and then board the ship on it's next stop before it leaves in Cadiz/Seville Spain.

Is this possible?

Essentially we'd be missing coming back on the ship in Portugal, and just catch up with the ship in Cadiz... one extra day :)

Thanks for your help!

Yes it is possible, just let your TA or HAL know so that they can request approval from the ship and the port authorities involved.

CMYK_iNK, Lisa beat me to the punch with the right answer, but I'd add leave plenty of time to do it. I will be leaving the Prinsendam 2 days early to connect home on QM2, and formal permission to disembark in Edinburgh took about 6 weeks, although we were quickly advised informally hat it was ok.

Yes. It probably would be permitted. You must get permission prior to sailing from HAL (ask for it in writing - e mail) and then address it with Front Office after you board but it is likely they will be agreeable to your request.

Lisbon is a wonderful city. We've enjoyed several visits there and can understand why you would like more time there. Go to Fado.... ;)

But Seville is also a great tourist city so hopefully you'll get to see some of that city, as well.
