so what happens if somebody removes their tips the last day? Do they go back to the employess affected and ask for the money back.

I'm not saying what you posted isn't true but it doesn't make sense to me.

Why the need to announce over the intercom that the employees have received their money?

Bill

I'm not buying it......makes no sense. And I have never heard this announced over the intercom.....weird....it would make more sense if they received the tips from the week before......otherwise it would be an accounting nightmare......

Well, you weren't on the Carnival Magic from May 10th through the 22nd or you would have heard it.

Some of you believe nothing from no one.

NOTE: BARBADOS CRUISES

All gratuities are pre-paid and automatically added during the booking process for Barbados itineraries.

Does this refer to the people that start and end their cruise in Barbados or does it refer to the Victory that sails out of PR and goes to Barbados

This is for the pax that embark and debark in barbados not for the ones that embark in San Juan.

People STOP removing the tips!!! If there is something that is wrong, done improperly, or needs doing LET THE DEPTARMENT HEAD KNOW! Don't let it ride until the last day so that nothing can be done about the problem. Let Carnival make it right don't stiff the staff.

.

I agree with this totally.

Furthermore, I was on the Magic last week and asked about "non-refundable credits". If for some reason you have too many of those, instead of looking for ways to waste them....... increase your tips.

Ex - you have $20 non-refundable credit at the end of the cruise. Forget the internet or the casino. Increase your tips by $20.

I asked the front desk and they said it can be done.

The staff work hard, and this will help compinsate for some who think they can save $100 on the price of the cruise by removing the tips.

I do believe that the tips are given to those listed on the Carnival site. For those on Magic, I think John Heald was the cruise director and perhaps he wanted to let people know about the tips. Do I agree with that? No. I do believe it takes two weeks for them to get the tips put on automatically by Carnival.

I also think that most people, NOT THE OP, remove tips because they are cheap and don't want to pay the full amount. To us, tipping is part of the cruise expense so we expect it. To pay the steward and waiter, assistant waiter the full amount, still stiffs the people serving them in the windjammer etc.

I have heard all the excuses including I wait on myself etc. but they are still eating and just look for reasons to save a measly $14 for 2 people for the week. But, to most of them, they don't look at it as $14, they look at it as spending money for something not necessary.

I don't understand why it's so difficult to pay the tips as requested and I, for one, will be really happy when ALL people have to pay a surcharge that is non-removable. Too many people look for reasons not to tip---usually it's because they spent their money elsewhere and can't come up with the money. How sad when you are served all week. I wonder how they would feel if their employers decided to not pay them for the week because not enough people did business there that week or some other picayune reason.

Sorry for the rant, but skipping out on tips to pay directly or some other reason really gets to me. I'm fully ready to be flamed! Also, we are not wealthy or any other reason you can come up with to say why even when we don't eat a meal or a few meals in the dining room, but we do believe we should tip.

So if the staff is not good and not even average and does horrible(which has happened before) your advice is to "not stiff them". How can you stiff someone that is not doing there job? By tipping someone thats providing a horrible service your letting them know its ok. You probably reward your kids for going to jail, getting d's on their report cards...ect... A tip is for a service performed above expectations, not for not cleaning your room, forgetting towels,ect... If you want to donate to them as a charity case because you believe they are ppor go right ahead but to tip someone for not doing there job is poor advice IMO. Also there can't be a list for those who remove tips if they remove them the last day.

When we cruised in June on Valor we were on an excursion in Honduras with a private tour company. Our driver/guide was actually an ex-cruise employee who had worked on RCCL, Carnival, etc. He told us that when we tip our room steward, waiter, etc. (on Carnival...I don't think this happens on RCCL) and the charge goes on our Sail & Sign account...100% of the money does NOT go to the room steward, waiter, etc. We were so shocked, but I did not ask a lot of questions. What I did do was go to Guest Services and had all the charges removed from my credit card and then I tipped everyone in cash so that I was sure they would get 100% of the tips. Has anyone ever heard about this? I would imagine Carnival would deny this, but why would an ex-cruise employee lie about this? He has nothing to gain because he doesn't work for the ships anymore.

Just out of curiosity, do you always believe everything that a taxi driver in a 3rd world country tells you?

:p;):D

Because they are the MOST reliable source for information, especially if they are bitter ex-employees who now drive a taxi.

Are you serious? Do you really believe that? I am astounded! I see some really inane comments on this board and this would fall into that category.

Then that would explain the mention of tips......

At first I didn't realize what you were getting at and then ;) I realized that many Europeans don't tip or they go in a and take them off. Yes, that might be exactly why it was announced.

It was mentioned in JH's blog that a certain very large group that used to be in the cold war were very demanding during the entire cruise and had the waitstaff hopping for extras and specials every single night of the cruise and then they ALL took their tips off. He made a point of saying that Carnival decided to replace that money because the staff had worked so hard and deserved to be tipped.
