going to bars & not drinking

Do you think Carnival pays the Piano player for fun? No they pay him/her to bring people in to drink. That bar is open for revenue not for a sitting area/lounge and if people were coming in to drink and wanted that seat it would be expected that the person not drinking move.

What? Hopefully whoever has that expectation is prepared to be disappointed. It is an entertainment venue that has beverage service. No matter how crowded a bar is, never had trouble getting something to drink. I'd rather stand than sit but either way, the servers get their tips and then some. And so does the piano player. Those that drink, especially in the piano bar, make up for those that don't. Same thing for the Sports Bar. OP, enjoy the entertainment. :)

I would suggest what your supposed to do at a bar .DRINK

As far as being a non drinker they have many many virgin drinks

After 8 you can go to the theater shows that are not bars

problems solved

I disagree with this, I do not drink that much and by the time dinner is over I usually do not want a drink so I will go and listen to music and not order anything or just order water. You are being discriminating against people who do not want to drink. I do not drink soda anymore and the virgin drinks have way to many calories for me.

Im sorry to say if you dont want to drink why go to a bar.Would you do this at home? Would you drive to a bar, be seated and not order a single thing. You would be asked to leave for loitering

Last cruise, my DH & I went & sat down in the piano bar for a while. The drink we ordered was finished but we wanted to sit & listen to the music. The place wasn't crowded. Is it okay to just sit & enjoy the music? In a regular eatery or bar outside of a cruise ship, I would feel compelled to either order another drink or leave (vs tie up a table) but on a cruise ship, I'm thinking that this might be different since we've paid to be on the ship. thought on this?

sit as long as you like...We usually have late dining. On the way around the ship we stop by and listen to the performers at the bars. Right after dinner it is rare we are ready for a drink virgin or alcohol. So we sit and enjoy the peerformance with no problem.

When a server asks us if we want something we politely decline. They usually put knapkins on the tables as a signal to other servers that they were approached and were offered bar service. That way, the other servers don't waste their time. If we are there any length of time and we want a frosty beverage, we just make eye contact with a server and we get a drink. No fuss, no muss. Quite often if the venue is not busy and we are seated away from the performer (as not to be distracting) we have had excellent conversations with the servers learning about their home countries. Not once did we feel we had to pay to be there.

I have gone to a bar and pay the cover to see a band and just ordered water all night long and did not get kicked out. Entertainment is included so that is like paying a cover for a bar. If I do not feel like drinking I should still be able to enjoy things.

Only if you are shoeless and in your bathrobe.

Crap, now I have to change my plans;)

It's not a land based bar which solely gets it's revenue from selling drinks. There is no expectation that you buy a drink. Sometimes it is nice to just sit there and listen to the music.

My point. Thats why a cover was created

So my point is on a cruise the Entertainment is included in the price of the cruise so that is like paying for a cover on land. When you pay a cover at a bar on land you do not pay the waitstaff it is for the band playing. If you do not drink because you want to drive home, they are not going to kick you out of the venue. I say sit down where ever you want and enjoy the music or the dancing.

I guess people shouldn't sit in the buffet area either unless the are eating. Its eat and get out. Yet people use this area to socialize and play games. I have seen many people playing cards in the buffet area. They should be kicked out immediately after they are finished eating.

Actually, the card players should be considerate of others who would like to sit down and EAT, which is what that area is designed for. There are other areas of the ship to socialize and play cards.

They pay the piano player to entertain people in a venue that has a bar. It is definitely not expected on a cruise ship that non-drinkers have to get up and let drinkers have their seats. That's ludicrous! And it has nothing to do with being courteous or paying the wait staff; there's no rule against it and that pretty much tells you what Carnival expects!

You are the one that is not getting the point because you use Chair Hogging as an example...There are rules against Chair Hogging...there are no rules against going to to a bar on a cruise (unless it's some kind of specialty thing) and sitting down to enjoy music and not ordering a drink. So you'll have to come up with another example because, really none of the ones you have given make any sense at all. Not only that, you are insinuating that I'm saying its my vacation and to heck with everything else. I haven't said any such thing! In fact, I'm saying the opposite! I'm telling the OP about the rules, or in this case the lack of one for sitting an listening to a piano player and not ordering a drink! So, you are totally off point! There isn't a rule to break so how am I saying to heck with the rules I"m on vacation and to heck with everything else. You totally are so off base!

First of all, I want to say I don't go to the lounges or the piano bar. I do drink and most of my drinks are purchased in the casino. I do want to play devil's advocate for a minute though. If I were one that goes to the lounges or piano bar and ordered my drinks there, I would be more than a bit upset if I had to stand while someone sipping water or nothing is sitting. It's not just YOUR vacation, it's MINE too. I'm not saying the non-drinkers etc. aren't entitled to be there, but, to me, the seats should be for people spending money in the bar. Also, if I were the one drinking and couldn't find a seat, I darn sure wouldn't stay there. So, Carnival loses, not me.

This probably wouldn't be a problem on most days, but on day 1 when it is difficult to find a seat, I do think that people should eat and leave so others too can enjoy lunch. No need to be a chair hog in the buffet too!

It really doesn't matter what anyone thinks yea or nay...there is no rule that says you can't, therefor you can! The argument that "it's your vacation too" doesn't fly because it's never-ending. I can say the same thing "it's my vacation too" and since there are no rules against sitting in a lounge on a cruise ship and just listening to the music and enjoying yourself, why should I have to get up to give you a seat! It just doesn't make sense. If there were a rule that you had to buy a drink in order to be there then you'd have a point. Drinkers don't have any more rights than non-drinkers. Just say'n and not flame'n.;)

Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they don't get it. That is the beauty of having our own opinions. No one is right or wrong. Since there is no rule regarding this subject you do what you feel is best and others will do the same.

Its really not hard to understand and by the way I do understand the different opinions including yours:)

Drinkers should have more rights than non drinkers in a BAR.The piano bar is not open to be a free lounge for listening to music. Its open to sell beverages PERIOD.Like I said before they do not pay for staff to work at a bar for fun .They want revenue, thats the only reason the bar is open.Whats so hard for people to understand

Because the bar isn't a separate business entity. You can sit there all night and not buy a drink and not one crew member will ask you to move- the proof is in the sitting;).

I always drank when hanging out at the piano bar, but i could care less if someone else does or doesn't. You got there first-you're seat. I hate standing at bars, but I wouldn't begrudge the non-drinkers for hanging out if I had to stand. They paid there cruise fare too.

Sorry still think you are wrong. We go to the show and do not order a drink. Do we leave so a drinker can have our seats?
