lauram Posted May 18, 2005 #103 Share Posted May 18, 2005 (I do think it is was bit bizarre to be on the lobby deck and watch the passengers trying to get a petition together for Carnival to refund ALL the money to ALL the passengers since we would miss ONE port--which they ended up replacing!) Are you serious?! Please, oh please, say no.
waterrats Posted May 18, 2005 #104 Share Posted May 18, 2005 Derf - do you know where the term "three sheets to the wind" comes from? How about "head" (obviously since this is a boating website, i am talking about a head on a boat)?

How about "head" (obviously since this is a boating website, i am talking about a head on a boat)? To be “three sheets to the wind” is to be drunk from http://www.bartleby.com/59/4/threesheetst.html The "head" aboard a Navy ship is the bathroom. from http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/traditions/html/navyterm.html Is someone going to ask me about the POOP DECK? Carnivalization (the creative interchange between opposing, contestatory uses of language) From http://www.mla.org/adfl/bulletin/V26N2/262007.htm That will have to do for now. Are there any Literary Teachers out there who want to tackle this. I wonder if this is how they named Carnival Cruise Lines. mwpyle Posted May 19, 2005 #110 Share Posted May 19, 2005 Crusingator, I WISH I was joking about the behavior of some of my "fellow" cruisers (but thankfully, no cruise-critic folk--we ARE a higher breed, you know!). I intentionally went down to the lobby deck just to get a 'sense' of what was happening--hoping to get some more information/details. I could hardly believe it. I was REALLY hoping that the person who went overboard didn't have any family (we didn't know that they did at the time). I kept asking myself, "How would I feel if I had lost a loved one and walked throught the lobby to hear these opportunistic blood-suckers (and that's what I thought them to be) planning a commercial mutiny!"? You might have thought they had won the 'free-cruise' bingo lottery like "hey, maybe we can get our money back if we make enough noise..." It was amazing how many folks suddenly decided that Aruba was the only port they ever wanted to visit in their entire life AND how they wouldn't have booked the cruise without that port AND how without it, all the food they had eaten, shows they had seen, other ports we'd visited were totally 'worthless' without a visit to paradise--aka Aruba... DFD1 Posted May 19, 2005 #112 Share Posted May 19, 2005 The actions of those who did not give a damn about the lost souls and only cared about getting to Aruba are perfect examples of the fact that today's cruising explosion has brought the "bus people" to cruising. Would to God they would go back to the buses and take their outrageous lifestyles and bad manners with them. I'm ready for the flames.

NewOrleansGuy Posted May 19, 2005 #116 Share Posted May 19, 2005 >>I am sad that they disappeared but I think I would be a little upset that they skipped Aruba because of it. << Yeah, wouldn't want to ruin your trip just 'cause a couple of people might be dead. Heck....it's almost that way now......look how enclosed the pool area is....... Hmmmmm, maybe a ship in a bottle Ok.....all kidding aside...how horrible..... and of course the ship should turn around and look for the people......I think the comments about that were just trying to inject a little humor into a sad situation. FreesiaE Posted May 19, 2005 #124 Share Posted May 19, 2005 I just finished reading all of the threads on this--how tragic :( I hope the family is able to find closure. I also wanted to add my .02 regarding their description as Vietnamese Americans--it could have been done for the purpose of body identification in case a ship picks them up, or they wash up on shore--that way people have a reference and the body can be ID'd and sent back to family sooner. We hope that very soon, you have closure, and that you are able to put the tasteless comments on this thread into their proper perspective.
