Splendor - Carnival Offering Full Refund if Desired

My TA says it is not usual for Carnival to offer full refunds (sometimes a credit for port changes) so still concerned that this is a routine fix with very low probability of delays or more serious. What are you basing your opinion on?

I was on the 12/9 cruise and the ship had to slow down to 18 knots instead of over 21 knots(the usual top speed) all the way to PV. Parts for repairs were installed overnight and we were able to make top speed to Cabo and Long Beach. An overnight repair was not feasible in Cabo because we would not be docked.

Maybe they are going to have a new excursion for those that like to scuba dive, "Carnival presents major ship repair, 2 day scuba" Price is only $47,999 per person.

That's funny stuff right there!

So after the repairs they did on your sailing, they sailed at slower speeds with altered itinerary on subsequent sailings until they got parts etc to repair the "damage to seal of propulsion shafts" during the 1/6/13 sailing. We made a last minute decision not to go for various reasons but mainly husbands disability, and will get a full fare refund. Kudos to Carnival. Based on what someone posted earlier, the previous sailing went fine. Hopefully all goes well getting to PV, repairs will be done as scheduled, and all future sailings have no issues. Happy Day!

Being it's an itinerary change, with a lot of mumbo jumbo in the contract, you are allowed a full refund.

I just have never seen them proactive as such, and "public".

It's sad that their reputation leads people to feel such as you do.

However, could it be they are just doing the right thing?? (I am pretty trusting and naive so that should be taken into consideration...:p:p:p)

anyway, I haven't read the entire thread. I will keep reading to see if something changes my mind.

Before I go back to reading however, I would like to say having been to PV that I would absolutely LOVE an overnight there. Cabo is nice too, but PV is SO much better.

Sea days will be chilly and the weather in Hawaii is warm all year.

that depends on your elevation when on any particular island. There were times when we were in hawaii that I had a jacket on and was freezing my butt off (we cruised there last April).

I would not go back in April....jmo.

We just got off the 12/30 sailing today. There were no itinerary changes, hit every port as scheduled. Only delay leaving PV was due to a sick passenger offload. We did notice periodic 'shudders' while underway at sea & wondered about that, but no slowing of speeds that we could tell.

Yes if you travel up to see the volcanos it is cool but the the weather is about 75 to 80 in the winter and 80 to 90 degrees in the summer.

i think the earlier poster was right… the ship is cursed. Specifically, it is the curse of blackbeard. It is well known that when lt. Maynard cut off blackbeards head and threw the remaining body overboard, blackbeard swam around the ship three times until he got tangled in a fishing net. To this day he still swims around with that fishing net trying to capture cruise ships for their booty. And today’s cruise ships have quite some bootys.

for those sailing on the 1/6 splendor… not to worry. I have been saving chicken bones from my sunday dinners ever since the last splendor problem. If blackbeard’s curse raises it’s ugly head during repairs, i am on standby to beam to pv. I will perform a chicken bone exorcism and insure the ship sails on time thursday.

by the way… the lt. Maynard i mentioned above is not to be confused with maynard g. Krebs who later tuned into gilligan. It was gilligan that was cursed and sailed the cursed ss minnow. This all resulted in stranding of two of the loves of my life… mary ann and the movie star of course. (i never could make up my mind.) of course there were rumors that it was all a corporate conspiracy by company operating the ss minnow, but i believe that a proper curse is indeed the most likely cause of the ss minnow’s grief.

I was on the 12/2/12 sailing and had no problems. Loved the ship. Layout was a little odd, but didn't have any problems. Only thing I didn't like was the buffet closing in the afternoon and only option was the pizza and outside grill or room service. However I would have love to been in Puerto Vallarta for two days. We love PV.

Now MrPete, I am sailing to Hawaii on the Splendor next week.....no negative thoughts!!!!!

OK. Only positive thoughts coming your way! I'm sure they will get it done.

I would get some pointers from Gilligans Island before I left, though.

I wonder if this repair in PV was a continuation of the repairs when we were in PV early December?

Maybe they went and removed the fishing nets and found other problems, leaky seal or something like that, and now the parts were available.

Not that it was a "NEW" problem.

I hope it is fixed and they have a better ride home than we did. It was a little rough on the way back to Long Beach.

Was the rough ride caused by the problems the ship had, or by rough seas ?

For the three Mexican Riviera cruises I have been on, the way back has always been rough. I have heard it because the ship is sailing against the current coming down from Alaska. I love the rough seas, personally, but imagine not all do.

A friend that just got off the Splendor this morning had this to say:

Hello everybody and happy new years! We just got off the Splendor and we did not hear anything about issues while onboard. Everything was smooth sailing.

I guess they used their own chicken bones to get rid of the curse.

LOL Love ya Bob! No, no chicken bones...just a lot of vodka!!

The 12/30 sailing was full steam ahead..we were surprised to hear of issues when we pulled into port (heard from FB friends).

We're booked on Splendor 2 Feb so we are anxious to hear if the repairs were successful.

Maybe they won't know until they cruise for a bit. I'm guessing they really can't "take her out for a test drive" so hopefully someone on board now will give us the scoop.:) Thanks, m--

Still parked in Puerto as of 0530 PST. Uh oh.

When were they scheduled to depart PV?

We are on the Splendor right now, and this is day 3 in Puerto Vallarta. We were supposed to leave at 11 pm yesterday, but they have been working pretty much non stop on the ship.

After the initial email we got that someone posted, we have no more information. Except for passengers noticing this is not a seaday, but instead, we are still here.

Maybe later we will be given an update. It is costing them a lot of money. People left the ship for 2 days and drank on shore. The casino and shops are closed tight for 3 days (plus the one day in Cabo)

We are having fun, but then, we are go with the flow people. Cruise is supposed to be back in Long Beach Sun morning
