A Review of the Celebrity Silhouette- Aqua Class, Beverage Package, Bad Weather

Oh, I did have something to comment on about that. The OP said they had to arrive 2 days precruise and 2 days postcruise to be able to use their points, only to have DH bumped and pay an add'l $100 to get him on. When you considered the extra money spent for hotels and meals for 4 extra days, was it worth just paying for the more expensive tix upfront? Just curious. We've run into this before, but I don't think I'd spend 4 extra days. We stayed one extra day post cruise to use our FF points, but 4 days would be pushing our budget. If the cost was the same, of course, I'd take the extra four days of vacation!

Hi Jerseygirl3, the cost was actually a little bit less. The original tickets we were looking at were $800pp to fly the dates we wanted (one day before, and out on debarkation day), and one way tickets were $600pp. We were able to use our miles for one set of one way tickets, and then we had a $200 voucher and a companion fare ticket that brought our overall flights down to $500 RT for both of us.

In terms of the hotels, food, etc., we used Priceline for the first two nights and spent $300 on our hotel, and then our rental car was just under $100. Gas was not much, and we used Starbucks cards for breakfast, and shared the rest of our meals. This is not because we are cheap, but because we don't eat that much. :) On the flip side of the trip, our hotel was $80 per night and our rental car was $16/day (Costco deal). So overall we spent an extra probably $700 total, which is still less than what tickets would have cost-- plus we got two full extra vacation days and two travel days out of it. I would never pay more to "save," but in this case it worked out and we ended up paying less to stay longer.

Day 4 - First at sea day

We woke up expecting to see bright, blue Caribbean skies... and saw grey clouds instead. It was still the morning, so I figured that they would just burn off eventually like they typically do in the Southern states. We got dressed and ready and then headed off to our first breakfast in Blu. There were many options available to eat, and I never felt like my selections were limited. I started off this breakfast with two eggs over medium, coffee, orange juice, bacon and a mango smoothie. I do have to say, I really did not like the smoothies at all. They tasted a bit gritty to me, however, my husband loved them and often ordered two every morning. So opinions can differ. All of the egg breakfast plates come with asparagus, mushrooms and fingerling potatoes. I didn’t care for the asparagus and mushrooms, but I loved eating my potatoes with my eggs, so I often asked for more potatoes instead.

During our breakfast, the captain’s announcement came on at 9:45am like it did every morning, but he told us some unfortunate news: We were going to be entering a storm system for the next day which would provide cloudy weather, a bit of rain, and somewhat rocky seas. He advised us to exercise caution on the stairs and to avoid the top decks when it was rainy. So much for laying out in the sun!

At around noon, we had the Cruise Critic Connections party that was organized by the ship. It was held in Michael’s Club, but the disappointing part about that was that Michael’s Club was not serving drinks. The Ensemble Lounge had just opened up so we were able to grab our beverages there, but it would have been nice if they hosted all of us in a venue that was serving. Also, some people (us included) did not receive anything in our staterooms regarding the Cruise Critic meet-up. I don’t know if it’s because we changed rooms after we registered a few months ago or if it was just an oversight, but we called Guest Relations on Monday morning to ask when and where it would be held, and they were able to provide me with the meeting place information. All in all it was a nice gathering, but out of the 130 or so who apparently registered, only about 30 made it-- and most were from our Sail Away party the night before. We just got to re-connect and make plans for the rest of the day with them which was good. If you haven’t received anything about your Connections party on the first day at sea, definitely call guest relations about it.

We decided to spend the day just reading and resting.

8613127679_dd9f03a40d_z.jpg

We didn’t find anything we really wanted to do on the ship, such as the art auction or some Celebrity Life events going on, so instead we just got our books and found a cozy spot in the Solarium to read for awhile.

This was the only day that we ate lunch in the MDR. The food was decent and the service was good, which gave me hope for when we eat in the MDR on our next two cruises that we don’t have Aqua Class on.

This first day at sea was really just a relaxation day for us, so there’s not much to report on regarding what we did in the afternoon except read, rest, read and rest.

However, I will take this opportunity to talk to you about our experience with the 1, 2, 3 Go! package. When we had booked this cruise in December, the 1,2,3 Go! package was not being offered. All we had was some OBC from our travel agent, but that was it. In January, when the package came out, I immediately called our TA to see whether or not we could take advantage of the package (for traditional sailings, the package included your choice of either the Classic Alcohol Beverage package, on board credit or complimentary gratuities. We opted for the beverage package, because we knew for us that would be the best value. I enjoy wine & occasional cocktails, and my husband mostly drinks either soda or beer.

I read multiple times on these boards that people were being told that if one person wanted to upgrade their beverage package, that because two were included with the 1,2,3, Go! package, that both parties were required to upgrade. However, this was not the case. I asked about it first thing when we got on board with Guest Relations as I was interested in the Premium Alcohol Package, but I knew my husband would not be. They told me that only one person can upgrade if they want, and that it could be done at any bar on board. Also, another thing you might be interested in is that on the first day, I decided to see whether I would prefer to upgrade or keep the package as is (the upgrade is $11.50 per day, which includes gratuities). I discovered at dinner the first night that most drinks I wanted (Molecular Bar, Martini Bar, Pinot Noir, sparkling water, for example) were between $9 - 12, which meant that I would not be able to drink them under the Classic Alcohol package. I waited until the second cruise day/first day at sea to upgrade, which saved me $11.50 as they do pro-rate your upgrade based on how many days are left. This is a great opportunity I think for those that want to try the Premium package but don’t want to pay $82 dollars or so. The bar staff told me that you can upgrade any time during the cruise. So, my upgrade only cost me $69.00 and I had it Monday - Sunday. I am SO glad I upgraded-- I didn’t drink hardly anything off the Classic package except for morning cappuccinos at Cafe al Bacio. Was this because I had the PAP and I chose accordingly? Perhaps. ;) But still, I am very pleased with this inclusion and (thankfully!!) have the free packages on both of my upcoming cruises. If you have any questions regarding the 1,2,3 Go! offer or the drink packages, let me know. It did take a few weeks for the package to show up on my reservation, but sure enough it was there when we checked in.

Anyway, enough about that. So what my husband and I decided to do as our evening ritual was to head up to the Persian Gardens about an hour before we got ready for dinner and just decompress: read, get warm, watch the ocean, relax in the steam room, etc. Spending time in the Persian Gardens was a very close second place regarding some of my favorite experiences on board. It’s very hard to say whether it would be worth the weekly pass (close to $200 to purchase I think), but well worth the cost of Aqua Class. It was just SO relaxing. We never really had a problem getting a chair, even at 4:30. My husband never spends time actually relaxing-- he is always moving, going, building, etc., and this was the first time I’ve seen him just truly allow himself to read and relax. It was definitely a bonding experience for us, as he typically refuses to set foot in a spa! We would usually lay on the heated chairs for about 25 minutes, then move to the aromatherapy sauna, then to the steam room, then to the rain showers. And we always arrived in our plush robes and slippers from our room, in true spa fashion! It just felt SO good not to be hurried on this trip. We are typically running around going places, doing things, seeing people, etc., and from about 2:00 - 8:00 each day, we just went with the flow and took our time. It was fabulous.

8613126119_948371810e_z.jpg

So tonight, the first night of the ship, was formal night. I have to say, Celebrity does it well, and so do the people on board. The previous cruise lines we sailed on had a very lax policy, and the one time I “went all out,” I felt out of place because no one really dressed up. This time, I didn’t. I did not wear a ball gown, but a nice cocktail dress and jewelry. Many other women wore ball gowns and/or classy cocktail dresses. I did not see anyone “dressed down” in Blu or otherwise. Formal nights really just make things kind of fun for everyone, like you’re out on a really special, romantic date.

My husband and I decided to begin our night at the Martini Bar. I had a pomegranate martini and he had a watermelon martini. Both were okay, but because I am not a huge martini fan, I didn’t totally love mine. However, what I did love was the atmosphere. I felt like I was at that famous ice bar in (Finland? Norway?) where you have to wear a parka and everything inside is like an igloo-- very chic. It was a really popular place to “pre-funk,” and the great part is that we’re not driving!! It was also a good people watching spot, as it was near the main foyer area on the fourth floor, so you could listen to the live music playing while being a part of the buzz.

After another phenomenal dinner in Blu, we decided to make our way down to the casino. Before this trip, all I played were slot machines, and I don’t play much. I have a love-hate relationship with slot machines. Love, because when you win, the dings and rings are an adrenaline rush. Hate, because I basically lose all of my money in three minutes. I gave myself a $10 limit, and then spent $20. Won nothing. Boo hoo to me. I vowed to stay away from the slots for the remainder of the trip, because losing quickly is no fun!

We finished our evening taking a leisurely stroll around the top deck, as it had stopped raining and we wanted to get some fresh night air. There is something so truly magical walking on the top deck of the ship with the person you love beneath the stars. The ocean noise, the smells, etc., it’s just such an incredible experience and view. We often strolled hand in hand after dinner to just talk and take in the grandeur of it all.

Tomorrow, is our Cozumel day. We had plans to visit the beach club called Nachi Cocom, which limits its guests to 100 per day and provides all you can eat drinks and food for $55 per person. We booked Nachi Cocom immediately in December because we did not have the drinks package yet and we wanted a relaxing Mexican beach front experience. We were beginning to second-guess our choice of reserving space there because of the fact that we already had unlimited food or drinks, but we already had reservations so we were going to still do it. Laying under the Mexican sun with a cold drink in hand by the ocean was my idea of paradise... ;)

Day 5 - Cozumel, Mexico

When we woke up first thing in the morning, we threw back the curtains waiting to be greeted by hot, sunny, Mexican weather... and instead, we were greeted with this:

8613127523_9c0ebbdb51_z.jpg

8614235468_494659bb40_z.jpg

We were shocked! We’ve never been to Mexico before when it wasn’t sunny. We had quite a lot of rocky waters the night before so I suppose that we shouldn’t have been surprised, but we were still disappointed. The waves crashing over the beach chairs that were visible from our deck sure didn’t make me want to lay out, nor did the windy weather and the cool temperatures. Thankfully all that Nachi Cocom had required was a 10% deposit, so we were only out about $10. We emailed them letting them know we wouldn’t be making it, but we also felt a little good that we had just saved $100 by not going. Plus we had all the free food & drinks on board that we could want, anyway.

We headed down to breakfast at Blu to see whether the weather would change, but it just got more windy and even started to rain. The shore excursions desk had a huge line because apparently many people’s excursions were cancelled-- especially the ones that involved boating. There was a Captain’s Club party with Mr. Bayley that was offered to guests at the Playa Mia beach club, but again, since this was our first Celebrity cruise, we were not invited. Some of the people we met decided to go, and some decided not to. Reports I heard were that it was pretty windy until the sun briefly came out mid-afternoon.

To give you an idea of the conditions in Cozumel, check out the pictures below:

All in all it wasn’t horrible. We saved some money, split a cab with people to visit downtown for awhile, fended off Diamonds International sales people luring us into their stores, and I even got to use free wireless to check in with some of my photography clients while there. Around 2:00 in the afternoon the sun made an appearance which made everyone really happy, and we booked it back to our ship to get a little lounge chair action before it went away. It was not a terrible day at port, but it definitely could have been better.

At dinner that night, we heard from a guy sitting next to us that the seas were SO rocky that many people were throwing up off the sides of the boat on both the going to and return trip from the Mayan ruins. One man’s wife in particular was so sick that she couldn’t even make it to dinner. It sounded terrible to us! I feel so bad for those people. They were actually delayed making it back to the ship because of the rough waters, and the captain had to make an announcement letting us know the ship would be delayed about 45 minutes in order to wait for them to make it back. This is one example where I think it does pay to take a ship sponsored excursion!

This night was a difficult one, as the seas had not calmed down and many people were getting sick on board. I left at one point to use the restroom while we were eating dinner at Blu, and both bathrooms on deck 5 were closed because of “messes” and the hallway near Molecular Bar was closed as well because someone had gotten sick there, too. I don’t tend to get seasick so I was okay, but I know a lot of people were having a hard time. This is another example where taking medicine with you and/or wearing the bands or ear patches might be a good idea, just in case. People I knew who were taking medicine or wearing the patches did not have any problem with seasickness. This night was the worst of it, and thankfully the rocky waters calmed down for the rest of the trip.

After dinner, I got my first drink at the Molecular Bar-- the Black Mamba. I was hooked! I knew the Molecular Bar was going to be my go-to after dinner spot. My husband did not have the PAP drink package so he could only taste sips of my drinks there. He got his drinks from the Ensemble Lounge or from the Sunset Bar if he drank anything besides soda during the trip.

Tonight was the night I graduated from the slot machines and learned how to play Roulette! It was exciting because no longer was I at the mercy of the slot computer-- I was at the mercy of my own luck. I bet my standard $10 per night, and then lo and behold, I doubled it! I bet my winnings again and lost, so I walked away with my $10 in tact. Winning. ;) After we spent only a few minutes in the casino (I really didn’t want to lose anything), we got coffees at Cafe al Bacio and listened to the live music in the foyer area for awhile before heading off to bed at around 11:00pm. These late nights are growing on us!

We also had very rocky seas for the rest of the night, so laying down was interesting to say the least. It took me a couple of days to stop having the “rolling” feeling when I was laying down! I was excited though-- in the morning we had sunny Grand Cayman and our Royal Palms beach day to look forward to...!

What ships are your others cruises on? I ask because my wife and I started out on X in AQ on the Solstice and were hooked. We then did AQ on the Silhoutte and then AQ on the Summit. We were disappointed on the Summit because we were use to the S class ships and thought that they would all be like that.

The M class is nice but they don't have all of the features that you may have liked on S class. There is no Molecular bar, no hide away, no heated loungers in the spa, no foot stools on the balconies except for the new added cabins and a few other things that I may have missed.

So if you have a cruise on a M class don't expect it to be like the Silhouette.

We have always sailed in AQ but we were recently on the Constellation and were in CC because they don't have AQ yet. We found that dining in the MDR was just as good and in some cases better than Blu. We also had the liquor package, would get a coffee from the coffee cafe and then have breakfast in the Aqua Spa cafe. You could get smoothies, fresh OJ, egg white omlettes and a lot of other good healthy items there. We also had lunch there. We decided after that cruise that a balcony would be fine unless the difference for AQ was very small. We also liked the Coffee cafe better on the Constellation as it also has a bar that you can sit at instead of the counter. It was a nice place to sit and have frozen coffee drinks mixed with various liquors, and socialize with other passengers as they ordered their drinks.

And the T pool took place of the Persian Gardens.

Thanks for sharing your cruise and pictures with us.

Hi Miched, thanks for the info. We are sailing on the Reflection in July through the Mediterranean, and then we are sailing on the Eclipse next June through Northern Europe. I have heard that about M class ships-- we also set our bar high on AQ with the SIL, because we can't afford it on our upcoming cruises as it's currently $1,000pp more than our standard verandah. :) So hopefully I will come down off my AQ high and be okay with future M-class sailings!

I think you will enjoy both of those ships even though not being in AQ. I wouldn't pay that much extra either. As we found out that with the bev package most of the AQ perks won't be missed, you will get bottled water, smoothies, and fresh squeezed OJ or grapefruit juice with the package. Eat your breakfast and lunch in the Aqua Spa Cafe. I think you will find that the dinner food isn't that much different than Blu in the MDR.

You won't have the shower panel, Persian Garden access, and dining in Blu, no foot rest on the balcony and some other little perks. There is the option of paying $29 pp/pd for the ultimate dining package that allows you to eat all of your meals in the specialty restuarants or you can also purchase one of the dining packages that discounts them. I would just try the MDR during the next cruise and then maybe do a special restuarant on the next one if you feel that it is needed.

Your wonderful review convinced us to change from Concierge Class to AQ for our 11/1/14 Transatlantic sailing. I was hesitant to spend the extra $300/pp, but after all, it IS a 15 night sailing, so that made the decision easier.

It'll be our first time in AQ, and so looking forward to dining in Blu and spending those 8 sea days relaxing in Persion Gardens on our way back to the States.

Day 6 - Grand Cayman

This particular morning, we were not scheduled to arrive at the Georgetown port until 10:00am, so when we woke up around 7:00 we were still sailing on the seas. The skies were partly cloudy, and we were looking forward to a sunny day in Grand Cayman, which was another port we had never been to before. We were hoping that we would have better luck this time with the weather as we were planning to visit the Royal Palms beach club which was just $2 per person for an entry fee and a quick cab ride from the port.

Around 9:00am, our captain came on the announcements early and notified us that the seas were very rocky (as we had experienced earlier) and he made an executive decision to have us not tender in Georgetown. Instead, we would be tendering about 10 miles down the shoreline in a town called Spotts Bay. There was supposed to be three other cruise lines in port with us that day, but apparently two others had already given up their plans for tendering in Georgetown and instead moving to Spotts Bay. This news was given to us as we discovered that the weather had been getting progressively worse. Most people on board had their excursions cancelled once again, including visits to Stingray City. The Shore Excursions line was the longest we’d ever seen in! Our captain also notified us that we would be tendering about thirty minutes late because of the detour, and that we would be let off based on a priority basis. I was SO disappointed that we had day 3 of bad weather. All I wanted to do was lay out and relax in the Caribbean sunshine!

8614233658_8b6ab3840e_z.jpg

The plus side of this was that Celebrity was paying for a shuttle service to bring passengers from Spotts Bay to Georgetown; the bad news was that once on land after tendering, the wait for this shuttle service was over an hour. After my husband and I and some of our friends made it out onto the port, we decided to forgo the wasted time waiting in line and hire a sightseeing service that was being offered where other vendors were selling their goods. We were a bit skeptical, but with a price of $25 for two hours (where the taxis into Georgetown were already costing $5), we decided it was worth it.

Our driver, Valerita, crammed us in one of her tiny vans-- we weren’t sure if it was a good decision or not, but it sure beat standing in lines for the shuttle service in the rain! Plus, it was the exact same tour of the island that Celebrity was offering, but about $30 cheaper.

So, off we went for a grand tour of Grand Cayman with Valerita-- our animated tour bus driver!

I liked Valerita because she always laughed at my jokes... ;)

Some of our group mates weren't sure about this adventure... but some of them were!

More on the tour of Grand Cayman with Valerita on my next installment tomorrow... :)

Great review so far! I hate when there is even a day of bad weather on vacation, and you guys had more than your share for sure! Glad you were able to make the most of it though.

Ps: our next cruise is in AQ, and your pictures of Blu are getting me very excited! :)
