Jack's shack. Grand Turk

Is it far from the pier? Is it better than Margaritaville? Thank you.

Was at Jack's May 15th, it was not worth the walk. Our server looked like the most miserable human on earth, not a smile, not a word. It was easy to see he hated his job. Took an order for two drinks, delivered one and we never saw the other even though he looked our way several times. It wasn't busy, so that's no excuse.

I personally would never go again. Like they say, you get one chance to make a first impression.

Whatever you decide to do, have a fabulous time, Grand Turk is beautiful.

Though I love jerk chicken, I doubt we will go to Jack's Shack after reading the negative reviews on the place. I can't believe service is this poor.

It's not always that poor. Remember: Everyone who has a bad experience at a place rushes to the internet to post about it. Folks who have good experiences rarely rush to post about it.

We stopped at Jack's Shack two weeks ago. It was crowded but everyone seemed pleasant. I gave the bartender (a young friendly woman) 2 free coupons for shots of rum that I got off the website. She gave us the shots right away. We sat down next door by a place with a Yamaha sign. They were nice and told us we could sit there. Best part - we played with Topher :). I guess it depends who is serving that day. I would stop by again.

was a t Jack's Shack a week ago!!! Wish I was there today. We got off the ship about 9 and walked directly to Jack's, took maybe 10 minutes. We wanted to get a couple chairs and umbrella and knew whit two ships it would get crowded.

We ordered jerk chicken as soon as we got there because sometimes it takes a while. Took maybe 15 minutes this time. Topher is still there and there are two other dogs that are very loveable also.

There were water toys in the water and Jack's is very child friendly. People come just for topher and he now has a gift shop with shirts and hats.

Here are some pictures from last week.

I haven't seen poor service from Jack's in the times I've been there. I'll be there again in 2 weeks. The girl at the bar was the pleasant sort. The young guy serving food wasn't smiling but he was efficient and I didn't think he was angry or depressed or unhappy. Certainly the owner and his wife are nice people.

The place has changed some from our first visit. Our first visit there was just Margaritaville and a 15 minute walk down the beach. Jack's was just a shack with a grill, a small bar, and beach equipment to rent. Now there is a small casino next to Margaritaville, and another beach shack place next to Jack's. There are usually some guys with water toys in front of that beach place, although it might just be a shack for equipment storage as I've never seen it open. Jack's is still the same small place, but part of the shack has a souvenir shop. It's a laid back place, no wild parties. Just people sitting on the beach eating, talking, drinking, music playing, decent beach scene kinda stuff. My kids enjoyed it. I didn't see anything that would concern me for my kids.

There is an inflatable rock wall and rubber slide right next to Jack's. It wasn't part of Jack's but looked like an independent setup that anyone could pay to use. There were also towed banana boats rides from the same people. I didn't use them and didn't pay attention to prices.

I would say that if you think that a place that serves food should be sterile like a stainless steel cafeteria, you won't like Jack's. It is a beach tiki bar with an old BBQ grill. But the jerk chicken that comes off that grill is only outdone by an old BBQ grill on some beach in Jamaica. And the conch was so fresh, tender and tasty, it's the best I've had.

I completely agree with this. Last summer my son (who was 10 at the time) and I walked to Jack's. Walking there was OK but when we were ready to leave I asked about getting dropped back at the dock because I had read that the owners did this for customers. I was pretty rudely told no by the owners. Our server (young male) also was not friendly. Food/drink was fair. Shouldve gotten a taxi back because the walk back in the July heat for a 10 year old was miserable even though we live in FL and are pretty used to the heat. This summer I think we'll stick to Margaritaville.

I didn't go there on purpose, but ended up there after a scuba diving excursion. They dropped us off there at the souvenir shop as a soft sell. Anyways, there was a horrible smell in the air. It smelled like rotting meat mixed with sewage and sunscreen. I was gagging. That dog that everyone is so enamored with is absolutely filthy and smelled almost as bad as the shack itself. I'm no prima Donna but it was honestly gross.

WE LOVED JACKS SHACK!!!! It was perfect for us.....no frills for sure. Beer was $4 each for the local brew, I had 4 beers for $16. We stopped by Mville pool at the end of the day....guy we met on the ship had a bucket of the same beer I had at Jacks.....he paid $41 for 5 in a bucket on ice.....so you do the math!!!

Jacks is a dive, that is what it is......good people, we had good service but I can see where people would say they had poor service. While at the bar a couple came up and ordered drinks, the owner (Janet?) said I don't do blender drinks here, the blender is too damn noisy!!! I thought it was funny, they probably didn't.....they pour drinks, they don't mix them!!!!

We had the Jerk Chicken, thought it was fantastic.....half a chicken and a load of fries for $12....cooked over coals.....tasty.

The lounge chairs are beat up....but free....umbrellas are $10.....

The owners are very nice in my opinion. Their daughter was behind the bar also.....all good people from Canada.

We had a great day at Jacks, we will go every time we are there.

If you want blender drinks, go to Mville......take your wallet with you it will be a $100 day, guaranteed!!!!

Heading to Grand Turk in 2 weeks and when I was there 7 years ago it was rather scary.

The reviews of Jacks has me intrigued-especially with the dog as I will be missing mine. :(

As a solo cruiser, do you think it would be safe for me to head there alone? Again my last visit to Grand Turk left me kind of weary.

Thanks!

You will be fine doing it alone. Its just a walk up the beach and you can see the ship from Jacks. When we went it was just the owners Jack and Janet and topher the dog who loved to swim and play in the water with anyone willing to play :)

I think you would be safe and would enjoy the day, especially the dogs. We went to Grand Turk in May. We started off the day by going towards the conch graveyard which is to the right when coming off the pier. We found some conches and made friends with a dog who I think is named Cooper. He would go up to a hole and smell. Sometimes he would dig and sometimes not. If he dug, a crab would pop out and he would play with it, but he never killed them. He walked with us to Jack's shack and laid under our chair. I think he belongs to the owners. Then Topher showed up and he is just a mad, wild digger. Very entertaining to watch. We enjoyed our day at Jack's. We aren't big drinkers but it is a nice beach and wasn't very crowded. We didn't order any food so I can't comment on that aspect. We would definitely go there again.

Thanks so much! I think I will put on my big girl britches and do it! Plus the conch graveyard has me intrigued too!

  • 2 weeks later...

Didn't care for Jack's Shack much at all. The beach was nice though. My handful of kids were very bored. Seemed like a great place for someone who just wants to lay on the beach and drink all day. Not for us.

We moved to Margaritaville and all had a great time!

Won't do Jack's Shack again.
