tominabox1 Posted August 26, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 26, 2013 Our cruse on Sunday will be the first one where we don't have pre-paid and pre-arranged transportation so I know we're going to need money for a taxi from the airport to the hotel, hotel to port, port to airport. We'll bring $100s for the ship and just exchange for smaller bills if we need to at GS, but for the taxis and stuff, how much cash should I bring and in what bills? I was thinking about $100 with lots of $1 bills but you can't carry too many in a wallet. What do you guys normally carry? (more info: we'll be staying at the Renaissance hotel in FLL for taxi fare estimates)
Rufferto Posted August 26, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 26, 2013 A few 20s for taxis stateside should be ok. A taxi driver might get annoyed with making change for a 100. As you said, you can always change bills onboard into smaller denominations (the casino is a great place to do this besides guest services). For your ports of calls, I would definitely have 1s, 5s, and 10s for tips and taxis, and for shopping. You don't want to run into the trick of "Sorry I don't have change", forcing you to pay more or overtip. Research the ports of call boards to get taxi estimates of places where you want to go. You mention bringing your wallet- I usually don't bring mine on Ports of call. Just a driver's license and cash in a backpack that is closely watched by myself and DW in case of pick-pockets. 39august Posted August 26, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 26, 2013 Taxi for two (maybe up to 4) is about $15 from FLL to your hotel. And about $12 from hotel to port. I would carry fives and ones in Florida and in your ports for taxis.
luvscruising2007 Posted August 26, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 26, 2013 I would carry about $100 in a variety of bills. Maybe 2 in $20's, 2 in $10's, 4 in $5's and the rest in 1's. Variety is the key so that you don't pay more than you want to in extra tips.
Crazy Gramps Posted August 26, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 26, 2013 My general rules is nothing bigger than a $20. Cracking 50's and 100's can get interesting at times. I also bring a lot of $5 for tips. Gramps
phoenix1181 Posted August 26, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 26, 2013 Our "traveling" cash is always $200 in denominations from $1 - $20. That takes into account cabs, tips, & any incidentals along the way like a snack or a soda. I also put that same amount aside for the trip home. We usually spend less on the way home but by doing that, there's cash to pick up milk, bread, whatever to hold us over until the shopping can get done............ trev71 Posted August 27, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 27, 2013 My DW and I always bring cash.. coming from Canada we usally get 500$ usa and get 300$ in 20's .... 100$ in 10S's then probably about 50$ 1's then about 5$ in 5's and we never have a problem.. the last time we didnt bring as many 1's cause we knew we could use the bill breaker at the casino.. They have them at most of the Royal Carribean ships.. yes it is alot of bills to carry but if she carrys some and I carry some its not too bad and we do leave some in the safe in the room so we arent carrying 500$ in cash at once
bouhunter Posted August 27, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 27, 2013 FYI there's often a wait at guest services. If it's open, it's often quicker to change money in the casino:)
JosieCat-MN Posted August 27, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 27, 2013 Whenever or wherever I travel, I always make sure I have $200 in small bills, usually 6 $20's, 4 $10's, 4 $5's and the rest in $1's.
m*u*g* Posted August 27, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 27, 2013 $700 mostly 20's but not for tips. I always have enough cash to cover the unexpected taxi or shuttle ride. Will keep a few 1's, 5's, and 10's in the envelope also. And I don't put it in my wallet.
cb at sea Posted August 27, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 27, 2013 Larger bills ($100's) are much easier to carry...the ship can break them into smaller denominations, as needed. Just carry some smaller bills for those tips/small purchases until you get to the ship. Even a cab driver can give you change, if you ask!!!! You really don't need exact change anywhere, except, perhaps, on a bus!
