It's Not Freestyle Cruising If You Cannot Wear Shorts In The MDR

We were on the Dawn last week and I was surprised to see at least 2 men wearing shorts in the Venetian MDR. I only noticed it on one night, not the first night either, but we only ate there a couple of times. All things being equal, I'd rather see the shorts than the 50+ guy wearing a new black t-shirt every night - each with a rather suggestive saying - all week, even if he did wear pants.

 

Being from the northeast, I can't help feeling underdressed if I'm not wearing pants for dinner out. However, I can see the point of those who live in warmer climates that nice dress shorts are acceptable. However, you are more likely to see cargo or jean shorts.

 

Shorts don't bother me.....even when the guy has ugly legs!

 

But the over the top suggestive t-shirts make me stretch my tolerance level. Doesn't matter if it's male or female some "messages" are not suitable for many places other than the privacy of your own home.

 

So count this as another reason why I like Freestyle! We won't be sharing a table with an embarrassing t-shirt.

In truth, the need to wear big-boy pants in the dining room at dinner can have something to do with the homeport and the time of year.

Nevertheless, big-boy pants and a decent shirt are always acceptable.

NCL isn't really trying to emulate the Carny Experience.

Are you on the Sun? There is a sports bar with food after 5:30 and a tapas bar with snacks.

Thanks for that info -- 36 cruises and counting -- and goes back so far that I rarely saw men in shorts in any MDR. My BF did wear Tommy Bahama silk Bermuda length shorts and a very subdued Tommy B. Hawaiian shirt with them and looked great on a Royal Caribbean cruise but shorts were not the norm.

 

SO glad to hear that on our upcoming NCL cruise he can wear shorts in ONE of the MDR facilities. I assume on the Sun, since there are two MDRs, the menus are the same so that I won't have to eat the same food every night for 10 nights just so he can wear shorts??? LOL In my experience, every MDR on every line serves up the same fare each night. We are not fans of the speciality restaurants but on NCL it looks like most of those have no problems with shorts, either. Hallelujah!

 

This is a huge relief as we like to pack LIGHT and not check bags on planes and this will really help out, plus making BF super happy as he cannot stand wearing slacks in the Caribbean. He's tall and lean and tan and looks like a middle-aged model so I doubt anyone will find him objectionable.

 

 

They have one MDR where you can wear shorts, and one MDR where you can't wear shorts. Carnival is now allowing shorts, except on elegant nights. It's becoming common on a few lines. Just go to the more relaxed MDR and enjoy your cruise.

 

I think NCL offers the choice to satisfy those that want to be really casual as well as those that wish to dress for dinner. Freestyle means giving you more choices to cruise the way you want, it doesn't mean totally casual everywhere on the ship.

Wore khaki shorts and polo shirts on the Breakaway and never had any issues, I did look a lot better than most of the guys in long pants;)

 

This is about as dressed up I want to get on any cruise

I see that your favorite cruise line is Carnival. Do they let you wear shorts in all restuarants. I don't know since I have never cruised with them.

 

I don't understand why people get all upset because they are asked to look some what presentable to eat. I think that NCL is too lax in their dress code. Shorts in the speciality restaurants should not be allowed but yet most of the they do.

 

I don't need your hairy legs near my food. Suck it up and wear jeans.

 

 

Oh please, you can't even see a mans legs once he's seated (for that matter, women either). And how does someone's legs get near your food? What a stupid statement. Get a new life!

If what others choose to wear to dinner on their vacation bothers you so much, you could always choose to sail on a cruise line with a stricter dress code and leave NCL to those who choose to follow NCL's dress code wearing shorts or jeans and enjoying their casual vacation without judging everyone else around them...whether they choose to dress up or not:rolleyes:.

YES YOU CAN!!!! The guy at the next table In

Manhattan Dinning wore a high style bathing suit

And flips at 7:30 pm.

It's very free style In the Casinos at

Midnight you can wear tank tops and shorts

And flips

Bermuda.

Never saw high end outfits or jewelry

On the ladies. The Casino dress code is more Free Style than

Atlantic City.

You can bring BUD Light cans into

Any dining restaurant

Many bud light empty beer cans are left

In elevator floors.

Very very free style.

Actually CCL started relaxing their dress code in response to NCL's Freestyle, at least to judge by the posts on the CCL board.

 

Who determines if the shorts are "nice"? Is there some fashion consultant at the entrance of the MDR making the decision of nice or not nice?:p

 

The host/hostess at the entrance is the arbiter.

And...on some itineraries out of some homeports, the crew just gives up and hopes to escape unharmed.
