Can you negotiate an upsell?

I got a call from Carnival offering to upgrade my room on the legend from a interior to a extended balcony for a $150. I took it but later on I wondered if I could have negotiated for a lower price. Has anyone ever done that successfully?

I am sailing the Legend on 10/21.... got a call last week to upgrade from balcony to an ocean suite for $250 more pperson. I asked if that was the best price I could get, he said yes... then I asked for $100 on board credit and he told me that the $250 price was all he was authorized to give. ( it is half price already).

Sooo.. I guess it all depends on how desperate they are to book out/book up. This cruise looks pretty full as it is.

P.S. I took the upgrade !! 3 weeks to go and counting!!!

Yes you can, it is much like a plane, no two people pay the same price for a seat. It applies to Carnival as well, private deals for everything from free specialty restaurant meals, OBC, cabins are all negotiable, just like any other venues.

I doubt you will read about it here, the people who have the influence to make these deals are not going to publish the how and why on a public message board.

The fact that you will possible post your good fortune on the internet, guarantees that they will not deal with you, and you will pay the "masses" price.

Most deals are made privately and the possibility that you might brag about it in any forum makes it unavailable to you.

You went from an "inside" to an "extended balcony" for $150???????????

OMG.... I wish that upsell fairy would call ME.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. This is one of the best offers I have ever read about. HAPPY CRUISING.:o

My goodness, what did the poster want to negotiate to? It looks like practically a giveaway offer.

I think you made a good call and doubt you would of gotten very far trying to talk him down. I think you got into someone's cabin who took an upsell of their own, probably to a suite leaving their room open.

I had quite the conversation with the upseller the last 2 times he's called. Here's what I've learned.

There is an upseller for each ship. He handles upsells off of a list from inventory control and has little flexibility. Inventory control shares a 'new price' for each category of cabin that remains in inventory and a list of candidates is created for email and phone calls. You are offered to pay the difference between there 'new price' and what the customer already paid for their cruise. Not much back and forth, kinda a take it or leave it deal. With that being said, the longer they go unsold, the target price will be reduced.

So, the better deal you got on your original booking, the upsell may seem like a bad deal because you have to make up the difference. Though, the OPs deal sounds like one to just take and run with. I've paid considerably more than that, but I was also going into an Ocean Suite and Grand Suite. Worth every penny...

I have an old post around here somewhere about who gets called based on what the upsell fariy told me. short of it, its complicated and the cabin you are currently in and its 'attractiveness' as an upsell to someone else does influence it.

Can't answer the question, but I will say that I got my first call from the upgrade fairy last night. We're on Sunshine, deck 8, interior, and they wanted to upgrade us to a standard balcony for $225/person. The total cost would still have been much less than the original price of the cruise when we first booked, I didn't see the point of paying that much more just to get a balcony room.

Thanks everyone! Just wondering. I did call Carnival the night before my upsell call inquiring about a balcony price and they quoted me a price of $800 extra. The next morning I received two calls from carnival, one about doing a b2b after the cruise and a different call about the balcony. I called back about the balcony like 12 hours later. Thank The Lord the balcony was still available.

We tried to negotiate a lower price on the owners suite last January. I figured if someone else didn't take it or they were having trouble they probably would have adjusted the price. But they never called us back. I guess the bottom line is that you should only pay what you are comfortable with for the upsell.

I am booked on a "tax only" casino rate for March on the Magic. I have called twice so far trying to upgrade to a balcony and have been told NO both times. The only way they will allow me to upgrade is to just pay the full, current balcony rate. I told them I would just stick with free as that is a better rate lol. But I don't understand why they wouldn't let me upgrade for the difference between the two rooms. Maybe inventory control? Trust me, I'm not complaining and will be happy to be on a ship in any room but I'll keep checking with them as the sail date gets closer just in case they have any open that they are willing to fill.

38 cruises with Carnival, and many upgrades and perks negotiated, so personal experience and with months of cruises and travel all over the world, I know how things work, and frequently benefit from it.

I tried to negotiate some for my upsell, but couldn't get near what they were asking. They wanted $1750 to go from grand suite extended to owners suite on Fascination. I countered offering $500 and saying that was as much as I could go. He didn't even email me back to deny my offer. :)

Well, that's exactly what they were looking to get from you: the difference between what you paid for your room ($0) and what the balcony would cost.

Dude! The first rule about the Upgrade Club is that there is NO Upgrade Club!

The plot thickens. So, you initiated the call. That explains a lot. And you got a killer deal.
