Ok i looked and couldn't find anything on passport... maybe i overlooked it... but heres my question. .. Carnival say i can cruise without a passport since Im a citizen. . Then I here other folks taking about that I need one or I cant get back on the ship at mexico port? Please some share your advice... its driving me crazy

On a closed loop cruise a US citizen may sail with a government issued birth certificate and a government issued ID. To get back on the ship in port you will need your S&S card and photo ID. As long as you don't have to fly back early (missing the ship, having something happen back home that requires your presence, a medical emergency) then you don't need a passport, although it is recommended. You have to determine what your risk level is and your own acceptance of that risk level in order to decide whether or not to get a passport.

I just wanted to expand that a closed loop cruise is one that begins and ends at the same USA port. Many cruises such as one that does the Mexican Riviera or say the Western Caribbean which also might include Cozumel would not require a passport. Please remember that if you had to fly home in case of an emergency and you were outside the USA you could not without the passport.

Pasport NOT required when you leave and return to same US port. Most ports of call do not require it.

 

NO EXPERIENCED TRAVELER WOULD LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT.

 

Govern yourself accordingly and have a great trip.

Have never heard of anyone who regretted having a passport!

 

Get a passport and you'll be glad you did.

Finally put in my application for a passport today. About time. Cruising in January.

 

I have to say, the process is simple. The wait in line is ridiculous. Had all my paperwork completed and ready....I have no idea what the people in front of me were doing. Took them anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes to do what ever they were doing in the office. I went in and within 5 minutes I was out of there...

Let me tell you something. I work at ain airport and meet people who are not aware of the implications not having a passport could have. Of course it's not mandatory, but you can save yourself a whole lot of trouble and money just by getting a passport.

It's all good until something out of the ordinary happens. And then all sorts of problems occur. You can't imagine the number of people having problems every day because they don't have proper documentation. I wouldn't want to feed them...

Does anyone know what can deny a passport issue.....

Besides missing documentation, not sending in payment or not completing the paperwork correctly, if you owe past due child support, you will be denied a passport. If you have an outstanding felony/criminal warrant you can't get one. If you have a felony conviction that prevents you from international travel, you won't be able to get a passport.

You never know when the cruise ship will have problems as this has happened and you did not read about the many hundreds of issues that arose from those on the most recent cruise ship failures had when they docked and then had to jump thru hoops just to get off the ship.

What hoops? The last incident I recall was the CCL ship that let people off in St Marten. Passengers without passports were issued a letter by CBP that allowed them to fly back to the States without a passport.

They have done this many times when its the whole ship. The State Department can and does issue a couple of times a week "an authorization to travel without a passport" which as the name implies allows someone to travel back to the US without a passport. But it takes a real emergency to get one quickly and losing your passport or not having one with you doesn't count...

It's extremely rare that something like that would ever happen, and if it did you make it sound like you be stuck at a foreign port for months which simply isn't the case. You will be on the same airplane heading home with all the other cruise ship passengers who don't have platinum cards or passports.

Could you please verify which cruiseline (and maybe ports) you are referring to? My family and I took our first cruise in 2011 with Carnival, and when we came back to the ship, they only asked for S&S card.

 

They must have changed the rules. I just want to make sure since we're taking another cruise this June.

On NCL Star last month, they announced before every port disembarkation (Columbia, Costa Rica, four Mexican ports) that we needed to have on us the ship's card AND a govt-issued photo ID. My husband (who has a better memory for details) says it was only checked once, maybe twice, at PRE-Check (i.e. before letting us proceed down the dock back to the ship) by Mexican authorities. I think it was Huatulco (where security was much in evidence) and he thinks it was Puerto Vallarta.

 

Better to have it and not need it than the other way around!

To the best of my knowledge all ports require a photo ID and sail and sign to gain access to the pier. Whether they actually ask for them or not (or bother to check them) is a different matter. At each port the ship you are on should have this information available as to what documents you need to gain access to the pier. (When actually boarding the ship they only check your S&S card.)

Last summer DHS and I cruised NCL around Hawaiian islands. We were told to take Sail cards and photo ID. At one port when coming back to ship, bus stopped at gate, checked drivers ID the. Boarded to check all passengers on the bus. One person did. to have his Photo ID. They were escorted off the bus --- wife/girl friend went off with him. Would guess she had to go in through the "walk in" gate, showing the ID then bring back his photo ID so he could walk through.

Some ports in Hawaii are "working ports" and require a photo ID. You also need a photo ID and ship card to re-enter the port in Nassau
