I do hope Carnival comes back year round once this is done. Sad, I have 3 certificates , 2 for NCL and 1 for Celebrity. But I still come back to Carnival. Great Price, ship, food and Service. Unfortunately, I love to cruise winter out of NYC, so I guess I will book with the others until she returns to NYC.

Hurry back Carnival I will be waiting for your year round cruises (I hope you return)

  • 2 months later...

Any update on if Carnival will ever come back to NYC and sail all year? 2015, 2016? I waited along time for them to come, only to be removed. I read here for all the reasons why they are no longer sailing all year out of NYC. But just thought there might be a slim chance they will return. I really don't want to sail the other cruise lines.

Thank you, I know they will be sailing thru October, my question was if there was any update on them sailing again winter months or is it truly a done deal and over now and all future sailings out of NYC.

It's amazing the price difference between winter and summer.

Over the winter, you could get an inside on an 8-day for $300 pp. That same itinerary and cabin is $800-$900 during the summer.

And that is the reason they no longer do winter sailings.I am sure until they can get better prices for winter they will not sail from NYC.Now if they had better itineraries and a new ship they might get higher prices for winter too.

Thats called supply and demand.

For now its a done deal. While I know there are those who enjoy sailing out of New York in winter months, the demand is just not there. I always questioned ti logic of putting a ship there. Not sure I would go for free and endure 4 days of cold(er) weather.

I saw someone say they are sailing the Splendor out of Norfolk. I don't think Norfolk is going to get any more passengers than New York City.

I really don't think it is a permanet situation. Remember they stopped sailing from Norfolk for awhile as well. Now they are once again sailing from Norfolk.

My personal belief is:

  • by moving the Splendor around to different ports they may be testing the "waters" to see where the greater bookings/interests lie
  • they are still having to update their ships to the new standards
  • Splendor is one of the first ships to have the Dr. Seuss on board and it was done on a sailing out of NYC
  • Splendor was one of the first ships last year to get upgraded menus and other 2.1 upgrades.

My feelings are that the Splendor was moved from NY because they didn't have the scrubbers installed and it makes sense to not sail from NY in the winter as they were practically giving the cruises away and now there will be increased competition in NY.

Then how does NCL and RC sail all year with not cheap cruises?

Royal attracts different passengers. If you are coming from Pennsylvania or New Jersey it is relatively easy to drive to the Bayonne port and park there for the length of a cruise. Manhattan is a different situation. Royal also has newer ships with more exciting features. I have been on Royal, NCL and Carnival in the winter. Talking to other passengers, I met quite a few on Royal that would not sail out of Manhattan in the winter and have an identifiable preference for the Royal ships and itineraries.

As for NCL, prices for the same trip on Carnival are usually lower, but not always by any significant amount. Sometimes $10 per day.

I was on the Splendor in December and was hoping to repeat the trip in December 2014. I was happy with the ports, the ship, the fellow passengers, and very happy with the price. It is hard to imagine Carnival making money on passengers paying $40 per day.

I still feel if Carnival sent in a Newer Ship with similar whistles, it would get booked with higher prices. I have sailed Carnival in the winter, I love it. I also take the train in from CT, on Metro North, it's like $30 round trip from New Haven. NCL is higher in price, but then you get the Breakaway, this cannot compete with the Splendor.

Just really sad about this as this was the big news at one time, so many thrilled. I think the prices dropped everywhere as it was a time when so much was happening with Carnival and they needed to get their customer back and the only way is by $$$.

I hope they decide to come back with a new ship and at least try it. They never lose money with me, maybe for the price of the trip but not while we are on the ship.

Thanks for listening to me whine a bit.

I don't believe that, Manhattan is an easier drive than Bayonne, plus in Manhattan you have access to bus and train lines from all over the northeast, some within an easy walking distance if need be.

Bayonne, on the other hand, is only accessible by car and is out of the way.

Manhattan is definitely not an easier drive than Bayonne. No way no how. Overall though, I would agree that Manhattan is the more convenient of the two departure ports. So much public transportation available, which is not the case for Bayonne.

I live in NYC and have a car, so it's honestly 6/10 half dozen or the other for me. I'm sailing Breakaway later in the year and I'll hail a cab to the pier. I'm going to sail Quantum next year and I'll drive and park in Bayonne. The complication with Bayonne is for those who don't have a car, it's not as simple then. There's always the option of hiring a towncar or limo or something.

RCCL has a larger percentage of non US passengers than Carnival does. Some of the RCCL sailings have as little as 200-300 US and Canadians on board with the rest coming from other parts of the world. With the exchange rate in their favor, what is expensive for us, is dirt cheap for them. While some of the RCCL ships are newer, a lot of the items on board -- bumper cars, flow rider, etc. are pushing their cabin prices higher -- great if you use these things, if you don't you are still paying for them.

Bayonne is not the easier place to get to. Cell phones only work at the very beginning of the entry into the terminal. No separation between arrivals and departures since everything is on one level. Only one berth in Bayonne and you must take a shuttle bus to the ship. No very easy for anyone with a handicap.

Out of Manhattan, you can come in earlier and stay at a nearby hotel or leave a few days after you return. Bayonne does not offer the level of shopping, hotels, sightseeing, etc. that is available in Manhattan. Car services to Bayonne can run as high as $300 depending where you are coming from. Much more options of getting to Manhattan -- even walking from the bus or train station to the pier -- can't do that in Bayonne!.

To reiterate, talking to other passengers I was told that those other passengers, in their own words, expressed a preference for driving to and parking at the Bayonne port. I live in Manhattan and greatly prefer to use that port -- I could conceivably walk there, but the last time I came and went using the bus and subway which didn't cost me any money as I have an unlimited Metrocard.

Talking to other passengers I was told that those other passengers, in their own words, like RCL and do not like Carnival. I am not expressing my opinion here. I am not a huge fan of the bells and whistles on Royal and would not pay extra for these things for my taste. We made limited use of the ice rink. I don't particularly care for cruise ship production shows. There -- that part is my opinion.

Bottom line. The company that runs each line know when and where they will make money and they make decisions based on financial performance. Sometimes they are testing new things. On the trip last December I met many people who were paying very low rates and also were not big spenders when it came to the bar, casino and specialty restaurants. People like me. Perhaps the cruise line is looking for customers who spend a bit more during the cruise as well.

Having just spent an hour+ of what was supposed to be a 2 hour and 22 minute drive trying to get from Manhattan to NJ via the GWB, I'm not sure the words "easier driving" should be associated in any way with Manhattan!

You should have taken the Lincoln Tunnel, it's right next to the pier in NYC! When we left after our cruise in November, it took us less than 5 minutes to go from the pier to New Jersey on a Sunday morning.
