No smoking on balconys?

Recommended Posts

I believe that the announcement about the policy change was made before any bookings had reached the penalty stage (final payment date), so anyone unhappy with this new rule was free to cancel the cruise without suffering any financial loss. Hardly qualifies as a "bait and switch".

Not exactly. Airfare is many times non refundable and deposits on hotels may fall in the non refundable category.

I just brought my smokeless ashtray with me when I was on the Oasis. It was no big deal and I had zero complaints. Plus the fella next to me was smoking cigars at night.

Wild guess, but I bet it would be a much different tune if you were smoking on the boardwalk side(s)! Hence why you would probably never catch me on Allure or Oasis!

Hi

Where do you purchase a smokeless ashtray. I live in Canada but visit the USA as our family are Americans.

Thank you

Gwen

How do you exhale into this thing?

I guess if people see you smoking your ecig, that's what the issue is. Take 1 step away from the rail on your balcony and problem solved. We smoked ours in our cabin, left it in there a couple times and had zero problems from the room steward. Still don't understand the problem people have with them, they are odorless 100% safe water vapor. To each their own I guess.

Tests are still being done, at this point there is no proof that they are 100% safe! I don't want to be around them and I'm sure there are many like me.

And that right there is the entire point of the hundreds of pages of debate on this subject. Smokers will always think that their "right" to smoke is more important than any other person's right to breathe, sit, enjoy a balcony, whatever.

Agreed. Nor has it proven to be dangerous. Further studies are needed, until there's a large enough data set then it's all so much vapor. The one thing that's clear so far is that while e-cig vapor *may* contain some harmful substances it certainly doesn't contain carbon monoxide or the thousands of other compounds contained in cigarette smoke. Anyone who claims e-cigs are totally harmless is engaging in conjecture, as are those who claim opposite.

The other thing that is relatively clear at this point is that e-cigs are less harmful than regular cigarettes, both to the smoker and to anyone who *may* be exposed to second hand vapor (which has a lifespan of a couple of seconds compared to smoke).

Regular cigarettes were not originally deemed harmful either, lesson learned the hard way for many!

Another important difference is that all e-cig vapor put into the environment was already passed through a set of lungs and presumably anything harmful has already been absorbed by the user.

This is in contrast to regular cigs, in which "side smoke" is constantly generated while cig is lit. This smoke is actually far more dangerous than exhaled smoke for the above reasons.

And as for those who are incredulous that people would subject themselves to the harm of nicotine, to me it's no different from the harm we expose ourselves to in eating, drinking, etc. It's a choice. On person may choose to overeat and be overweight, but to them it's worth the risk of premature death because of the pleasure they derive from eating. So for others the vice is nicotine. For some it's both!

BTW one of the bigger shock I got in med school was when we got to nicotine in pharmacology. Like so many I had no idea what was the appeal, then we learned that "nicotine enhances alertness, short-term memory, reaction time, and problem solving skills." I had never used nicotine up to that point but you can bet I tried it while studying (chew) and let me tell you it's true. You can concentrate and learn and generally focus better with nicotine on board.

There's a reason, like there is for most vices, that people enjoy it.

So let's avoid the holier-than-thou. Unless you have a BMI of less than 25, exercise vigorously for 45 minutes most days of the week, and sleep at least 7 hours a day, you too are making choices that are detrimental to your health, as is your right as an adult.

Over weight people don't, based on their size, put by-standers at health risks as smokers do!

Hear, hear. An oasis of sense in a desert of ridiculousness. Why do people seem to think they know better & need to argue with a Dr?

What do they call the person that graduated LAST from med school?...............................doctor!

As an asthmatic, I applaud the various cruise lines who have adopted o non smoking policy for staterooms, balconies and most public rooms on the ships.

We sail mostly on Princess for the past fifteen years and the recent smoking policy changes have added to our enjoyment on the cruises.

Princess allows smoking in some areas of the outside decks and most nights in the casino. I think other cruise lines also make some areas available to smokers.

I am thankful that my DH gave up smoking twelve years ago.

It has made him feel healthier and I am no longer exposed to his second had smoke.

I do remember the days of travels with him where he had to find places to smoke.

It was frustrating at times, but I think no smoking policies was a factor in his decision to stop smoking.

As for the e cigarettes, I have heard that the vapors emit nicotine and chemicals into the air.

The e cigarettes are not allowed on airplane flights. That regulation must be because of emission of chemicals in the air.

Precisely. I don't care that smokers choose to put themselves at risk for lung cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, brain cancer, pancreatic cancer, etc., as well as heart disease. Have at it. Yes, people who eat or drink too much and don't exercise also have health risks to be sure BUT - and it's a very big but - they do not force their addictions on those around them as do smokers. Second hand smoke is just as bad as first hand. If there were a way for smokers to keep all of their smoke, including the residual odor, completely within their own bodies, I would have absolutely no issue with it at all. Thinking a plastic bubble perhaps?
