The perfume issue is not specific to HAL' date=' surely? You will find that on any ship, I believe.[/quote']

It's not. It happens on land. It happens in planes, on trains, and even on buses. That's why we choose to live in an orbital laboratory high up in the ionosphere.

Unfortunately, too late but I did break out my WW2 gas mask.

Maybe those ladies that smother themselves with perfume do it for a reason, it may be better than the alternative. The perfume may be uncomfortable but it won't kill you like passive smoking can. If I was a smoker I would book all my cruises with HAL.

Many people with allergies to perfume can die from an anaphylactic shock from being exposed to the perfume.

What is "many"? I don't doubt you, I just haven't heard of one, and yet we hear so much about the adverse effects of first and second-hand smoking.

This topic has been discussed quite often on this forum. A quick search will find plenty. Here is one thread if you are interested: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1996106&highlight=perfume+allergy&page=4

Are you suggesting that the wearing of perfume, colognes, and certain types of deodorant be banned for ships or from all public areas? Hair sprays as well?

Just like smoking in most enlightened jurisdictions.

For those that take these boards more seriously than the national debt, let me say that my comment that I wouldn't sail on HAL until they changed their perfume policy was tongue and cheek. It was intended to mock many of the anti-smoker respondents whose comments include threats to stop sailing HA or who have actually done so although, interestingly enough, they are still active on the HAL boards. I can listen to both sides of a discussion but I am really turned off by the use of threats whether dealing with smoking, wine policy or downsizing of the Adagio Quartet or whatever. And when folks, whom I don't know personally, tell me they stopped sailing a cruise line, I put those comments in the category of "who cares." It certainly doesn't lend to the discourse of the particular subject under discussion.

I was looking for some factual information not another thread on the topic.

Statistics Canada reported in the 2010 Canadian Community Health Survey that the number of people suffering from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities increased 31% from 2005 to 2010 from 598,585 to 800,500.

OK, I thought there was so info on how many die from it. I can die from diabetes, too, but I don't plan on it because I know what to avoid.;)

I missed the tongue and cheek part also, but agree with everything you stated so eloquently. I also don't care if others threaten or stop sailing on HAL until certain policies change. Who cares, there will be others to fills the cabins.

Exactly and they will more than likely be smokers which will make the other cruise lines even more attractive to people without addictions. I for one will be passing the word that if you want to smoke then cruise HAL.

At the end of the day....it is only a vacation. People need to lighten up.

You know the OP ask a simple question that has been answer many times over, but yet this thread has drag on for some 3 pages, enough with the snarky remarks, spend your money where you want, go on whatever cruiselines you choose, for whatever reason. All these smoking threads are not going to change anything, except to bring out the worse in people.

The smokers will be very happy that you passed the word! As a Carnival Corp stockholder, I want to thank you!!

By the way, I'm not a cigarette smoker. My addiction is cruising. The only time I'm a "whiner," is when they tell me I have to leave the ship!)

What these threads do is make all cruisers aware of what they can expect before they make an informed decision on which cruise to book.

I would not like to see a heavy smoker outlay a large sum of money to book a maybe once in a lifetime cruise only to be told when they board that they are unable to smoke during their cruise. For exactly the same reason I would not like to see a non smoker book a maybe once in a lifetime cruise only to find a cigar chain smoker on the balcony next door like we had.

Everyone is entitled to get the best out of their cruise, with information like on this thread people can make an informed choice on which cruise line best suits them.

Well, you are doing your part! Twenty six of your 93 posts have been about smoking? You are certainly passing the word around. I see it started when a "300 pound gentleman" smoked cigars 24/7 on the balcony next door to you last year.

I wouldn't like someone smoking 24/7 next to us either, but I'm not obsessed with the subject. In fact, in my 1,700+ posts, probably only 10 are smoking related. It's not my job to inform future cruisers, it can be read on HAL's website.

I hope you have a wonderful smokeless cruise on the Celebrity Millennium. You've made a wise choice switching to Celebrity because of HALs smoking policy and informing everyone not to book a certain cabin on the Rotterdam.

You still have time to join us on the Zuiderdam! Do we have to wait until next May to see you again? Did I ever send you the pictures of you and your sister on our balcony?

Hi Sue!

No, I won't be cruising this May, maybe next May. If you start in San Diego, maybe I can come down and see you then. Can't remember if you sent me pics, but I know I have seen pics of me and sis.

(Sorry for the off-topic. Back to your regular programming.)

I am quite flattered that you would take the time to read all my posts, I hope you gained something from them. If there is anything you need help with don't be afraid to ask, I am more than willing to explain it for you.

Off topic - sorry! - but as a newbie around here, how do you find all of someone else's posts? Not that I can imagine reading so many for any reason, but I am just curious.

Cruise Critic has lots of wonderful little navigational tools. Here's how to use the one that lets you find a person's posts:

When you see their name making a post, click on it. That will take you to a personal information screen with some tabs. Click on the one that says "statistics". Under that heading will be a choice to "Find all posts by ...". Click on that, and you will find an ordering of posts by that person.

If you click on the title of each, you get the entire thread; if you click on the first words of their post, you get only that post.

This is one quick way to find a recent post you want to go back to when you can remember who made it, but can't remember where it was.

Backtracking from all those clicks will get you back to where you started.

Have fun!

Well, it is Saturday morning, and with nothing else to occupy my time I just read all five pages of this thread.

For us, on board smoking is pretty much a non issue. With nearly 400 cruise days of experience, (mostly S and R class ships) the amount of time we were inconvienced by tobacco smoke would have to be calculated in minutes and seconds. The times when we really were uncomfortable were mostly when near the casino on the Vista class ships. We very quickly learned to avoid the area, no big deal.

The idea that HAL has become the smoker's choice is probably nonsense. The typical HAL passenger is a little older, and only a very small percentage of us use tobacco. That probably has something to do with how we lived long enough to get older.:D

The exposure to tobacco smoke would never keep me from walking down the street, and it won't keep us from cruising either.

Bon Voyage!

I have read all your posts, and I see you give a lot of advice for someone with just a few HAL cruises. Fortunately, I've learned nothing that I didn't already know, so you don't have to "explain" anything.

I'm sure the folks on the Celebrity forum will enjoy your wise counsel. Again, smooth sailing on your new cruise line. I know smoking is allowed on HAL, but will continue to sail with her 2-3 times a year.

So long and BON VOYAGE!!
