Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

My email from NCL said that you could smoke in the casino "IF" you are gambling. This should stop people from going their solely to smoke if they are nearby where they can't.

So actually, the casino should be no worse smoke-wise than it is now. In fact, it should be less smokey! And you can always find a spot to contribute that is not next to a smoker...at least I've always been able to.

I smoked for many years (I quit about 15 years ago) and I think I'm a little more understanding of smokers than some. Still, I try to avoid smoky areas just because they do stink! and not so much for the health hazard.

I don't smoke, so I don't need the GV. I can take over ten cruises in my snug little inside room for less that the price of the GV.

My calculator shows that I get 70 days on the ship instead of 7.

Exactly. This is what the smart money does.

That is quite possible he's been following the threads and my emails to NCL but no it wasn't an auto response, it was a quick to the point answer and the wording was such that it couldn't have been auto.

Sorry but I just can't believe that the CEO of a large company was at the ready to answer your email in what? 2 minutes?

So assuming it was not auto response then it was just one of his many assistants that are authorized to respond on his name

Yes assistants aka back in the day as secretaries sign their bosses name all the time

The email address you used was certainly not his private email address although I know it appears as though it is but ok just for argument sake if that is the only email address he uses it probably receives hundreds of emails an hour..... All read and handled very competently by a large staff of assistants.... If 1 in 50 emails get directly to him it is alot.

I read the long and sharply divided thread when RC went no smoking on their balconies.

I read the long and sharply divided thread when Carnival went no smoking on their balconies.

Now I'm reading this long and sharply divided thread as NCL has gone no smoking on their balconies.

I expect to read a long and sharply divided thread when HAL goes no smoking on their balconies.

I am wondering where the smokers will threaten to go when this happens.:D

Wow they are so backwards when it comes to ships leaving the USA with their smoking policies. I cannot believe that it is still acceptable over there to smoke inside a casino knowing the dangers of smoking not just to players but also to staff. Over here it is banned in all enclosed spaces and strictly enforced on the grounds of the health and safety of the employees.

Cruise lines departing from the UK including NCL and RCI do not allow smoking in any inside spaces INCLUDING the casinos. Why is there this strange stance in the US that people "need" to smoke whilst gambling ?

Not for me, don't smoke and drink very little. It is a misnomer that most gamblers smoke and drink.

European line such as MSC (Yacht club is amazing) and Costa (suite level awesome) - both are very affordable - their drinks packages extremely good value - and both offer smokers a comfortable alternative

Both cruise Caribbean ex Miami - neither is popular here on CC.

More however may start opening their minds (and wallet) to European cruising.

There are always options.

I thought you said you have been reading. The alternative most mentioned are AI's.

Absolutely no desire to cruise European itineraries. The world does not revolve around Europe. Great place to visit but that is all.

Maybe you're in the minority. I read that the Carnival Paradise, which was designed & built to be entirely non-smoking, gave up on that plan when they found that the non-smokers didn't drink or gamble nearly as much as smokers.

I go to Las Vegas all the time and what I've seen is that non-smokers are in the majority. Also, wasn't the Paradise built in '95 or '96, lot less smokers now than back then.

I booked with NCL ONLY because they offered the BOGO cruise offer back in May. I'm just hoping that I didn't make a mistake by not booking again with MSC as we LOVED our MSC Divina cruise back in April.

According to CC's Cruise Line Smoking Policies page

Costa Cruises

Where You Can Smoke: Smoking is permitted on the open decks, and in designated smoking areas in most public rooms.

Where You Can't: All restaurants and show lounges are nonsmoking. Smoking in cabins an on balconies is also prohibited.

MSC Cruises

Where You Can Smoke: Smoking is only allowed indoors in the cigar rooms, the casinos and one dedicated lounge, and outdoors on one side of the sun deck. Smoking restrictions are even tighter on Divina, were passengers may only smoke in the Cigar Lounge and on the port side of designated outside decks.

Where You Can't: Each MSC ship is now 90 percent smoke-free. Smoking is prohibited in dining rooms, theaters and cabins (including cabin balconies).

The list of "smoking friendly " lines continues to shorten

Sorry I started to fall asleep . I should have posted , I wonder where the smokers will actually go.

As far as European cruises, your comment makes me scratch my head. No the world does not revolve around Europe. So ?

With incredibly short port times, you can only get a taste of the culture. Much like the old days of cruising Hawaii, got to get the passengers back out to get the casino open.

Sorry, I have traveled Europe and Asia extensively and cruising is not the way to see it. Cruising is for relaxing/touristing and not for traveling.

Actually you are wrong

I am a Costa long term cruiser - and although I do not smoke - I know their policy - I am just off a cruise this month

One CAN still smoke on balconies on Costa - this is a new policy only recently introduced:

Is it possible to smoke onboard?

Smoking cigarettes, cigars and pipes is not permitted on board, except in the “Cigar Lounge” area. Electronic cigarettes may only be used cabins and in the “Cigar Lounge” area. In public areas outdoors smoking is only allowed in specially designated areas that have ashtrays. We would like to remind you that smoking is not permitted in cabins, but only outside on private balconies. To avoid the risk of fire, cigarettes must be extinguished and left in the ashtrays provided and never thrown overboard when they are still lit. We would also like to remind you that on board the ships Costa Mediterranea, Costa Classica, Costa Atlantica and Costa Victoria there are no indoor smoking areas.

I was not suggesting cruising in Europe

I was suggesting European style cruising FROM the USA

MSC still allow smoking indoors in some lounges.

We received an email yesterday from NCL stating that passengers staying in the GV are able to smoke in their own courtyard since it is a large confined space by itself......this is not so for any other haven balcony's just the GV.

I'm amazed of how strong of a hold a cigarette has on people, I stopped smoking about 18 years ago and never realized what an addiction this is until reading all of the post, very sad, some will even cancel a cruise over a cigarette? is not like you cant smoke is just that you have to smoke in a separate space of the ship. How many cigarettes does one smoke? and if you have kids what kind of example are you setting when you breaking the rules?

Myself and my husband are thankful to NCL for making this change:)

Looking at articles on some websites it seems smoking in balconies affects the health of staff and other guests but smoking in casinos right by other passengers and casino staff is ok? So the non smoking casino players and staffs health has less value for some reason?

If this change makes the casino any worse ... I am not sure I can survive the abuse!

If you open your balcony door and the smoke comes in your cabin you can not avoid the health issues linked to smoke.

You can choose to avoid the casino smoke because of the health issues by staying out of the casino (although I personally would have a very hard time doing that:D)

I actually have experienced many times people coming in the casino and sitting at a corner machine close to me not even facing the machine and smoking 2 or 3 cigarettes, as much as it bothered me I realized that they didn't really have many places to go to smoke.

Perhaps they ask members of the crew that smoke to work in the casino, just a thought.

Yes, W. Caribbean out of Miami. Amazing ship. Many say the best nightly entertainment shows at sea... BAR NONE!!! The BEST drink packages available (coupon books are available so all your import beers are $3.50 and mixed tropical drinks are about $5.75... This is including tax and tip!!!).

You get way more value than you pay for. Our inside stateroom was $349, balconies ran about $479. Many outdoor smoking areas available.

I will be running back to MSC after I experience my first NCL cruise in 70 days.

Sadly, this past week, NCL has let me down.

I WANT MY MSC!!!!

Sounds good - I dont smoke anymore but my my heart is still pro-smoking lol!! As I say MSC and Costa are options for those who are able to try a "EUROPEAN STYLE" cruise from the USA -

Costa's drinks package is similar - ts 23 euro per day for all inclusive - its awesome!! Kind of a shock to our system paying for our 14 nghts AI on NCL - still - worth it though ;)
