Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Maybe you're in the minority. I read that the Carnival Paradise, which was designed & built to be entirely non-smoking, gave up on that plan when they found that the non-smokers didn't drink or gamble nearly as much as smokers.

You have no proof that they gave up on it because of drinking and gambling. I think they gave up on it because it only did one itinerary and it's was only one ship. Really you can't have one ship with different policies than the rest of the fleet. Have to have consistency.

With incredibly short port times, you can only get a taste of the culture. Much like the old days of cruising Hawaii, got to get the passengers back out to get the casino open.

Sorry, I have traveled Europe and Asia extensively and cruising is not the way to see it. Cruising is for relaxing/touristing and not for traveling.

that is why one should always do pre and post cruise days

Europe cruising is incredible

I have stayed in both so we can agree to disagree, I believe it is true, we were able to talk to our GV neighbors on the DOS on the Gem. The point is for $20,000 you can smoke. I had no neighbors or even nearby balcony in my DOS so why No smoking? The whole thing is moot. Big money talks. I love my NCL trips but just booked a Presidential Suite at an amazing AI for half the money. I wish everyone safe sails and wonderful cruises.

I didn't say that the GV sun deck and DOS balconies aren't adjacent. I said the GV sun deck and the Haven sun deck are not adjacent.

Actually you are wrong

I am a Costa long term cruiser - and although I do not smoke - I know their policy - I am just off a cruise this month

One CAN still smoke on balconies on Costa - this is a new policy only recently introduced:

Is it possible to smoke onboard?

Smoking cigarettes, cigars and pipes is not permitted on board, except in the “Cigar Lounge” area. Electronic cigarettes may only be used cabins and in the “Cigar Lounge” area. In public areas outdoors smoking is only allowed in specially designated areas that have ashtrays. We would like to remind you that smoking is not permitted in cabins, but only outside on private balconies. To avoid the risk of fire, cigarettes must be extinguished and left in the ashtrays provided and never thrown overboard when they are still lit. We would also like to remind you that on board the ships Costa Mediterranea, Costa Classica, Costa Atlantica and Costa Victoria there are no indoor smoking areas.

I was not suggesting cruising in Europe

I was suggesting European style cruising FROM the USA

MSC still allow smoking indoors in some lounges.

Both Costa and MSC get mostly poor reviews but in any case their smoking policies will eventually be the same as the other cruise lines. And while they may lag behind in changes, they have been restricting smoking areas onboard.

I am a lifelong non smoker who works out everyday and eats healthy. I am perplexed by the continuous outrage over smoking. There seems to be a serious disconnect. I am continuously inconvenienced by habits of the general public and for the most part non of them are smoker related. I recently cruised and have numerous complaints with fellow travelers non of which are smoker related. After my most recent cruise, NCL July 11-18, 2014, I will not be cruising with the general public anytime soon. The anti-smoking backlash is just amazing to me. So, keeping stuffing your faces at the buffet (with sub-par food) everyday and knocking back your unlimited soda and enjoy your "healthy" vacation.

I read about it in several articles when it happened. This is from Wikipedia, (I know, not always trustworthy), but it has a source cited:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival_Paradise

Non-smoking rules were strictly enforced. No smoking materials of any kind were permitted aboard. If anything was seen or found, the passenger was fined $250 and put off at the next port (transportation home to be provided at passenger's own expense). Due to poor revenue, Carnival decided to discontinue the smoke-free ship in December 2003 because non-smokers tend to not drink or gamble as much as those accustomed to smoke.

And we know history never repeats itself.

you can't possibly be suggesting that cruises will actually become more smoker friendly are you?

smoking is only going to become more regulated in public areas/cruises/parks/hotels/AI's etc

you name it and the smoking restrictions will only increase and to think otherwise is just stubborn.

even me, a middle of the road moderate, can honestly say things that I was dead set against 10 years ago, I can just go with the flow on nowadays

Doesn't mean I condone it, it just means I understand things change and not all will like those changes

I'm sorry, but if you are as health conscious as you claim you are, you would understand where the non-smokers are coming from. You talk about people stuffing their faces at the buffet or drinking tons of soda; how does that affect you? Answer: it doesn't. Now if those same people are beside you smoking away, how does that affect you? Answer: a great deal. Secondhand smoke is not a fallacy or a hoax; the dangers are very real. My state won't even let parents smoke in the car with young children. Why do you suppose that is?

That is ancient history

The times have changed

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

I agree that times have changed. I do think it is time to make the casinos non smoking. Works on Celebrity. I booked four Celebrity cruises this year. Four weeks with Verandas. My last NCL cruise last December I did an outside because of their previous policy. Now I can book a balcony if I book an NCL cruise.

I don't think though that the times have changed to the point that all smoking should be banned like it was on the Paradise. There still should be an outside smoking area.

Just because it is in Wikipedia does not make it true. I take many cruises on Celebrity which bans smoking in the casino and the casino is always pretty active. And that was over ten years ago.

I did think their policy was too draconian back then. And I think it would be too draconian for now. They were tossing people for just having cigs, not only for being caught smoking. And I think there should be an outdoor smoking area.

YES HAHAHA LOL!!:D

Actually Costa have only just brought in this policy very recently. Until 2013 - it was still the 1990s stuff - ie - half the beam of the ship - inside and outside. It was on a Costa cruise in 2012 that I decided to quit smoking - it was unbelievable - even for me a smoker at the time - I just couldnt breathe. I came home - and quit :)
The new policy seems to be accepted okay. People can still smoke on their balconies, - indoors OMG there is one lounge which is very well sealed off, and air conditioned. The cleaner guy goes in wearing a gas mask  honestly - wish I had taken a picture now. I just cant see Costa changing their policy again for another few years - too many Europeans (young too) still smoke. On outer decks though - they have made it designated smoking areas - on the Serena (sister ship to Concordia) they had one bar way up top deck with ash trays at tables, aside from that - ashtrays were wall mounted and designated smoking areas were standing only. The good factor was for eciggers - they ARE allowed INSIDE cabins as well as balconies.
Costa does not get good reviews on CC - BUT - CC accounts for a TINY minority of people who cruise Costa - its actually very good - suite level is awesome and very affordable.
I was just pointing out that for some who love to cruise, but wont with the new smoking laws - there are a couple of alternatives - you just gotta get your head around "Eurostyle" cruisng albeit from the USA
One thing - you cannot beat them for their drinks packages -
Its just soooooooooooooo cheap!!!
Think the Luminosa sails from Miami - she is a stunning ship!!
Meanwhile - I think I need to remind myself I no longer smoke lol!!

The cruise lines are becoming the "Health Police" for those who do not smoke and for those who do. Good, bad, or indifferent.

I wonder if they will STOP selling tobacco products from the gift shop. NOT, that would cut into their profits! Shame, shame cruise lines, you can't have it both ways.

My 2 cents.

If you smoke, so be it, if you do not smoke, so be it.

I do not smoke, and I have found most smokers are courteous to non-smokers. I have had smokers on the balconies on each side of me, many times. I cold not smell it, and it never bothers me.

Some people just like to complain.

So would it be fair to suppose that your contention is that because you personally have not had your use of your balcony spoiled by fellow cruisers smoking on their balconies, on either side of you, no one else has? That anyone else who expresses an opinion other than your own is simply a 'complainer'? Edited by Macadian

Keep the faith baby! Oh that is sooo 1960's. lol

We all know that smoking dissipation is the future.

As far as I can tell it is almost cast in stone

Of course some will never admit it.

And I too have predicted many things that have come to pass and have been told I was out if my mind here on cc and in the " human world" as well. Lol

No one ever really has the guts to tell me that I was right all along of course but they know I know that they know I know! Lol.

Logic and common sense go a long way in life but sadly not everyone possesses this gift. Lol

This thread is fasinating.... peoples preceptions and opinions...

Two stories - one perhaps interesting - one an observation

Story: Was invited to the captains table and later several of us joined the captain in one of the bars for drinks and continued socializing - mostly my husband as I get quite quiet around people I don't know :o. 1/3 way through drinks hubby pulls out his cigarettes as we were sitting in a smoking area. The captain exclaims "Oh thank Heavens" and pulls his cigarettes out and they continued their discussions around being Captains in different but similar industries (airplane vs ship).

Observation: Been going to the same neighborhood pub for 21 yrs now along with many of our close friends. We live in a state that still allows smoking in any establishment as long as noone under 18 is allowed. Indeed, many of our friends smoked in their 30s (I have never smoked), now we are all in our 50s/60s - most have quit smoking - sadly my DH is not one of them :( - But over half of the young people now coming into the pub do smoke - not just because smoking is allowed - but because they started in high school. While the perception is that many folks have quit and for my friends it's absolutely true - I see a significant number of kids in their 20s smoking - and they don't think twice if where they are at requires them to go outside or whether they can stay inside - neither requirement seems overly onerous since it's their normal as it's always been that way since they started... only us older people remember when people smoked in their workplace etc etc... just my observation - so yes - hotels, ships, casinos are reducing places one can smoke - I am just not sure the perception that smoking is going the way of the dodo bird anytime soon... I also observed this on our recent trip to the Med - smoking was common place at all of the outdoor seating we visited - seemly without all the hub bub seen here in the states and at least for our group - not a problem.
