Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

This has zero to do with SOLAS, this is all about money. Non smokers are the overwhelming majority of the market and those that pay premium prices for balconies, suites and mini suites have made it clear that they will pay or show loyalty to lines with similar rules. Cruise lines will ban all inside smoking in the next five years. Celebrity already has and the rest will follow. The companies owe shareholders a return and with so many non smokers and so few smokers they are playing the numbers.

Not going to get into if it's right, wrong or indifferent. I'm a non-smoker. But, I do remember a time when restaurants, bars, offices allowed smoking. I do not want to go back to those times.

However, it does bother me when little by little, personal choices are taken away. I know I have some habits that are probably not good for me. But, I choose get to choose them. That trumps everything else....

Until then, I expect that this is sort of a test, for all the cruise lines. I had read that 20% of cruisers smoke. That's a pretty significant number. If they affect revenues, there may be some tweaking....

When those "personal choices" that are being "taken away", adversely affect the health of others which is what second-hand smoke does to people in the general vicinity of smokers, there is a good reason for banning such "choices"

You may believe that 20% is a significant number, until you compare that figure to what it was only a few years ago. That percentage continues to decline and if you think 20% is a significant number how would you classify the 80% who do not smoke?

Surprised if you don't receive an email about the policy.

I always count down the days no matter when it is. :)

I have two NCL cruises booked and never received an email. then again, maybe they are only sending them to people who have balconies booked (I have an OV and an Inside)?

And who was the last person to get removed from a ship for violating the rules (unless a safety issue)?

Passengers do get removed for violating rules. It happens. I have been on close to 50 cruises and have seen passengers removed. One removed for fighting, another for verbally abusing a crew member. And others, I don't know the what rule they violated but they didn't leave voluntarily.

Would someone get removed if caught smoking in a cabin or balcony? I would guess they would get the fine, or a warning the first time caught. But if they persist.... don't doubt that they would be removed.

I believe most smokers will follow the rules on smoking. There will only be a few who can't help themselves.

Prone for more fires in cabins? I've never heard of any cruise ship catching on fire because there was a fire in a cabin, or even on a balcony. Where did you get this information from?

Completely false. The smoke certainly doesn't disappear fast, and it has a tendency to fill your cabin if your door is open. I don't care one way or another, but let's at least be honest.

Then let's be completely honest. Leaving your balcony door open longer than it takes to step inside or outside is violating a different rule. ;)

My wife and I are both non smokers, but I have a friend who is a smoker, and he said he will now use smokeless tobacco(snuff) while onboard. Personally I think that stuff is nasty, but as long as its not against the rules he can go for it.

Not being nasty.

I guess I'm just wondering when someone will post "following the rules" as an option.

Some posters sound like teenage school kids trying to get away with smoking in the bathroom. Be an adult... suck it up.

When it comes to how one spends their hard earned cash, there is no need to "suck it up". The poster said nothing about breaking the rules, only whether they wished to spend their hard earned cash on a product which no longer meets their needs. when YOU decide to pay for their cruise, then you can tell them to "suck it up".

BTW, in my opinion, you were definitely being nasty.

I read the long and sharply divided thread when RC went no smoking on their balconies.

I read the long and sharply divided thread when Carnival went no smoking on their balconies.

Now I'm reading this long and sharply divided thread as NCL has gone no smoking on their balconies.

I expect to read a long and sharply divided thread when HAL goes no smoking on their balconies.

I am wondering where the smokers will threaten to go when this happens.:D

Costa. :p

European line such as MSC (Yacht club is amazing) and Costa (suite level awesome) - both are very affordable - their drinks packages extremely good value - and both offer smokers a comfortable alternative

Both cruise Caribbean ex Miami - neither is popular here on CC.

More however may start opening their minds (and wallet) to European cruising.

There are always options.

MSC does not allow smoking on their balconies. Costa does.

With over 600 posts (not counting the oens that have been purged) and 30 pages of discussion I can only imagine the uproar we will see when the cruise lines go 100% no smoking. At some point down the road it will come to pass. The fact it was tried before and did not last is not even slightly relevant, the past is the past and times change. Sooner or later all crusi eliens will be 100% smoke free and when it does happen this palce will (pardon the pun) light up!

Not for me. Currently, 75% of my vacation dollars go to land vacations and the rest goes to cruising. If a cruise line decides to go 100% non-smoking, I will switch to a line that still allows it. If all cruise lines go non-smoking, I will simply switch to 100% land vacations. No fuss, no muss. I have no problem with the removal of smoking on the balcony as long as some place it provided for me to smoke.

They cannot go into casino just to smoke- they must play in order to smoke in the casino.

True, but one can play minimum bet on a penny machine and only pull the lever maybe once a minute, possibly even longer between pulls. Spend less than $10 an hour and have the possibility of winning something as well.

I never thought I would quit smoking. For nearly 30 years - I smoked, laterally I was on nearly 50 a day - I convinced myself as they were low doze nicotine they were "safe". (0.1mg Nic + 1mg tar) . My daughter prayed I would stop. I cry now with shame when I think of her as a little girl covering her nose and mouth with her sleeve to shield herself.

In my day - I was handed a cigarette when I turned 18. It was like a growing up ritual - Smoking was everywhere. In planes trains buses - I remember my first office being a cloud of black smoke.

I never thought I would quit.

Two years ago - I was on a cruise - Costa (Im Gold Pearl with Costa) - and this ship was sooooooo smokey - the air con wasnt drawing it - and I remember being in the lounge thinking "I cannot deal with this smoke".. On the way home - we transited through Schipol airport. In Schipol there is a "cage" - a glass smoking room. You can take drinks in there etc. I was in there - and I kept thinking about the people around me. I was looking at drunken men who had foul language - they were horrible - I then thought about the smoke that had been in their bodies - going into mine - It made me feel sick to the stomach. That was the big start for me.

I had never ever tried to quit before. The fear of quitting alone makes people think it cannot be done.

I had ecigs at home - but at the time hadnt used them. I also had nicotine patches.

I got up one morning - and watched this video. For anyone reading this - who knows - one of you might want to quit. IF you do - then prepare yourself first with whatever nicotine therapy you want to use - - then - choose a quiet moment and watch this little ten minute film. Its not hypnosis. It is a little psychology - from a Doctor - and for me - it did the trick - he was right - it took me ten minutes to quit a 30 year habit. I watched that video - and to this day - I have never smoked again.

I worked with my local pharmacist. I was on ecigs AND patches. I still enjoy my ecig - albeit now I use zero nicotine menthol shisha -

Dont be afraid to quit - the fear I think makes you think you cannot do it. YOU CAN!!!

The money I saved from quitting I am investing back into my health. I initially put on weight. I now have a personal trainer twice per week and I am trying to not only lose weight but week by week, month by month - I am improving my lung function - I can only pray I can repair some of the damage I have done.

I do think its crazy to put people who use ecigs back into smoking areas. Why not designate VAPING areas then? Vapers dont want to be amongst smoke again - vapour is not smoke. For those who are newly quit - its very hard to be back in the corner again - and combined with alcohol and vacation - temptation to start again would be so easy. I cannot see why, if cruiselines want to alienate ecigs - that they cannot then make designated vaping -

Anyway - I know thousands read these forums without posting - and if one person quits from watching this wee video - my post will have been worth it - SO - if that is YOU - dont watch it yet - Save it for later. Prepare your nicotine therapy cupboard - and then - prepare to quit in the next ten minutes - There is no selling - no hypnosis - just a very very clever man. For me - who was on at least two packs a day, I watched this - howled my eyes out - and never ever smoked again. I had two cigarettes wrapped that week in cling film - I carried those with me "just in case" - to this day I still have them - as a reminder to me. And I never - smoked again.

Its THAT simple!:) Good luck!

Thank you - its an awesome feeling -

People say quitting smoking makes you miserable - I found it one of the happiest times of my life. I would wake up every morning - and think "WOW = I dont smoke!"

I still think its amazing!!:D

I SO get it!!! It has been almost 23 years since I quit... but still, to this day, I say "Thank You God, for helping me quit" when I see a smoker. My annual cruise is a reminder of the life I will enjoy for a longer time, and the funds I will enjoy more of. :)

Just thinking about this. Will the sale of cigs on board be affected? I've seen people buy a lot whenever I visit the liquor stores on board.

They will absolutely still sell cigarettes there is still smoking areas designated. You think they will give up making $$$$????

I completely concur. I was only stating there is no rule stating how fast anyone (including a smoker who may languish at a machine to extend their smoking time there) has to play a machine that they are sitting at.

But, how do you feel about a couple who are playing a machine together? Would they be allowed to smoke at the same time or take turns??

The way your first post read, this indicates leaving the door open for an extended period of time. I have never seen a cabin fill with anything airborne in the 2-3 seconds it takes to go through a door but leaving it open for an extended time (as many balcony dwellers do) would allow a cabin to possibly fill with residual smoke.

The stench certainly does fill a cabin that quickly. Who said anything about only one person going through the door?

When I was on the breakaway I saw many times couples playing together (just one actually playing the machine) I'm not saying they were smoking it's just it was kinda weird how many times I saw this going on. I go to Atlantic city a few times a month and don't normally see that there but on the breakaway many many times don't know why that was.

Personally if I see a person sitting at a machine playing 1 penny at a time just to smoke (and it's a machine I want) it will piss me off but what can you do???? There is no way to tell them they can't do that because actuality they do have money in the machine. I see this getting people into arguments but time will tell won't it.
