Cruisin 4 Ever Posted August 5, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2014 My FIL wants to come on a trip with us. However, he has some pre-existing health problems. He is stable on a day to day basis but does have a pacemaker, takes blood thinners and some other heart medication. He's afraid he can't get travel insurance. Is there any such thing as a "high risk" travel insurance?
Ducman Posted August 5, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 5, 2014 Whenever I have purchased insurance, As long as it is purchased within 15 days of the first payment of the trip, they include the pre-existing condition waiver. I usually purchase from a third party insurer.
AdGuyMG Posted August 5, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 5, 2014 If his health issues are controlled by simple commonly used medications like you describe, he can get trip insurance and the 60 day pre-existing clause would not apply. Although generally you have 14 days to purchase, I strongly recommend you purchase it at the time of booking.
Cruisin 4 Ever Posted August 6, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted August 6, 2014 So if we book a trip now for say 6 months from now, and on the trip he had an issue with his heart the medical treatment would be covered? We're not worried about getting reimbursed if he had to cancel but medical care in the event of a serious medical issue.
hartsnvt Posted August 6, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 6, 2014 I used insuremytrip.com They have many types of coverage and you can choose the limits by researching all of the companies they have. But definitely buy it the day you book your cruise so you will qualify for the pre-existing conditions.
Freckles_51 Posted August 6, 2014 #6 Share Posted August 6, 2014 Not sure if your FiL is in Canada but if so then you may find some useful info in this thread http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1390788
SadieN Posted August 6, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 6, 2014 Travel Insurance is age dependent. If you're over 80 (?) it might be hard to get. If so, go thru the cruise line. Make sure the policy includes emergency evac (ie helicopter from ship).
BigEasyCC Posted August 6, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 6, 2014 My FIL was 85 2 years ago when he joined our cruise. He bought cruise insurance through our TA. No problems. He has similar health issues to those mentioned. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Forums mobile app
BigEasyCC Posted August 6, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 6, 2014 My DH wanted me to add to my earlier post. We did not ask Pops how much his travel insurance cost. It is according to age.
klfrodo Posted August 6, 2014 #10 Share Posted August 6, 2014 I think it's very important to note that the OP is from Canada. Insurance laws and restrictions are VERY different in Canada than they are in the States.
