Golden has Princess@Sea

Excuse my ignorance here, but is the above now accessible from cabin TVs, as in a hotel, or only from personal electronic devices or the internet center? I am hoping they have added wireless keyboards to the cabins so we can use the TVs as terminals. I strongly dislike having to drag fragile and expensive electronics along when I travel, and the internet center is often busy.
No wireless keyboards in the cabins. Princess is providing the connectivity through your devices. I bring my iPhone and iPad with me on cruises. We had Princess@Sea on the Regal and look forward to having Messenger. I like the way Princess is implementing technology.

No, free text messaging (Princess@sea Messenger) debuts in November on the Regal. The other ships will get it throughout 2015. All ships should have it by the end of 2015.

Currently, several ships including the Golden have Princess@sea, which allows access to your onboard account and the Patter from your tablet or smartphone, but not from the TV. All ships will get Princess@sea in the coming months and prior to getting Princess@sea Messenger.

On the Crown, I noticed that while the Princess press release regarding Princess@sea stated you could browse the restaurant menus with their app, that feature was not available on the Crown this month. It had the Patter and your onboard account, but no menus.

Now I understand. Thank you for explaining this to me. I can't wait to try it :)

Viewing my account easily sounds great. Having a bunch of people immersed in their phones, etc. while onboard doesn't sound good to me at all. I can easily live without the messenger service.

Royal, Regal, Golden, and Crown have it. I am not sure which other ships have it.

Currently onboard Caribbean Princess and Princess@Sea has been enabled for a little over a month. The messenger and menu portals have not been rolled out, yet. They just redesigned the entire index page during the first half of our cruise and it is now even more usable.

I just do not want to hear phone beeps all day long (especially in the dining rooms and the entertainment venues and if taking a nap on a lounge by the pool) nor do I want to see little bright screens during shows in the Princess theater or other venues where it is dark.

Same here. The courteous will set their phones to vibrate only in public areas, and shut them off entirely in dark venues.

I just returned from a voyage on the Golden Princess. Last week, they started Princess@Sea. There are now a total of 6 ships with this capabilities. One a month until everyone is online.

For FREE, you can:

View your stateroom account

Pull up a listing of the events around the ship (not a virtual Patter)

Access Princess.com

Direct link to the internet if you have a package plan. You still need to log out and type in "logout.com" to end your session

And still there were mobs of people in line at the customer service counter (even with the account kiosks available at either end).

This was a most interesting 3 day weekday voyage. Over a thousand blue cards and 100 Elite, a little noisier than I remember (maybe I am just a year older). Many more rude and pushy people than I recall. Definitely people were there to party or play in the casino. Weather was great. Chocolate journey happened. And I still have my opinions when it comes to Park West's Art Auction. They have been rebranded "Princess Fine Arts"....not!

Do you need to download an App onto your IPhone to receive Princess@Sea, and if so can you download it from anywhere or does it have to be while on the ship?

Thanks.

John

No, you do not need an app for Princess@sea.

When Princess@sea Messenger becomes available (free texting) an app will be available from the Apple and Android stores for the Messenger feature. Currently that app is not available but should be available any day now. You will be able to download it prior to sailing.

It's a shame we can't access our onboard accounts or make dining reservations on the cabin TVs yet. That's pretty archaic technology now.
You can access your folio on your smartphone or tablet on several ships now. It's being rolled out to all ships. As for the TVs, several ships have hundreds of movies on-demand -- for free. Unlike several other cruise lines which charge to watch movies. This is being rolled out to all Princess ships.

That is Princess@sea Messenger, which supposedly debuts on the Regal in November. It allows you to text message from your tablet or smartphone for free. No free phone calls. None of the ships have this yet that I know about.

The above is the information we received via email a few weeks ago regarding our upcoming cruise on the Regal. We board 1 week from today, and I will make sure to report back to let people know how Princess@Sea and Princess@Sea Messenger work. :)

We will be travelling with friends, so the Messenger App could come in handy. As to messaging etiquet, this seems to be a problem everywhere, and not only with texting (though that is the most ubiquitous). For instance, there have been many, many conversations here on CC over the years about the use of walkie talkies aboard ship. It will be interesting to see whether Princess includes any "suggestions" or "guidelines" in the Patter (or elsewhere) regarding courtesy to other passengers in using the Messenger App, especially at dining and entertainment venues. I'm hoping against hope that people on the cruise are more mindful of not disturbing others' tranquility aboard ship than most people seem to be on land these days.

Boy, that really made me sound like a crotchety old fogey, didn't it? I feel like I need to yell, "now get off my lawn" after that. ;)

Do you know if there are still kiosks to access your folio from on these ships? I prefer to cruise without electronic devices. I carry only an older "non-smart" phone when travelling to be less of a theft target, and not have to worry about inadvertant $$$ data plan charges.

LOL! Yes, please report back on both the functionality and the etiquette of the texting since you will be amongst the first to experience it. Thanks.

Yes, kiosks are still available. There are quite a few others like you who prefer to cruise without electronic devices. One of the great things about cruising is everyone is not talking on their phones all the time. Texting could be handy for meeting up with family and friends, but hopefully will be used sparingly. It is also much quieter than phone calls.
