What happens to Silhouette during January 2015 (I believe) dry dock?

Jan 4th for one week.

Primary ( and pressing ) need: attending to whatever ails the starboard azipod .

While there, she'll undergo a thourough ''under the hull '' maintenance and routine similar tasks.

I literally just clicked submit on my reservation for the 11th. Is it a good idea to book a sailing as the ship comes out of heavy maintenance? Should I cancel and rebook on another ship, I am within my 24 hours. By about 23hrs 50 minutes... haha

We just booked the same cruise. We are going to roll with it and hope for the best. Hopefully we can meet a few folks from on here and compare notes through the cruise... :)

If just to fix azipod no problem, if major shipyard visit, I would want to wait a couple of trips to make sure all "bugs" are ironed out. This comes from 25 years working on large ships.

Sudden Cancellation

Celebrity Cruises has canceled its January 4, 2015 Eastern Caribbean sailing of Celebrity Silhouette so the vessel can go into dry dock for maintenance, Cruise Critic members report. Passengers were given a full refund of their cruise fare, or offered a chance to rebook on Celebrity Reflection and other Silhouette sailings, along with $200 or $400 onboard credit, depending on cabin category. In addition, Celebrity is paying $200 to reimburse for flights ($300 for international air).

I have no idea what an azipod is or why it needs to be replaced so early. Isn't she a young ship?

When we booked Silhouette while on Reflection we were told it's a sister ship. Is that true?

I don't' sail until November ....but I read elsewhere here about engine troubles too.

Greetings

The azipods are the units on the stern of the ships that house the props and their workings. The entire pod may not be an issue, it could simply have a bearing that is failing. The ship has to be dry-docked to complete this task.

Good Sailing

Tom

No nothing wrong with the engines :) that's a case of someone not knowing what an azipod is and saying the wrong thing

Doesn't matter how old the ship is, anything can develop at fault at any age. If the internals of the azipod get dirty or a foreign body gets in them they can develop a fault (as seen on a programme about them :)) pretty much same as anything mechanical.

thanks for the info.

we had not done any research on Silhouette, but picked it solely because we wanted to sail out of Fort Lauderdale.

The CVP we worked with recommend Silhouette as a ship that was the sister ship of reflection. She did admit to it being older than reflection but just as nice. Said CVP made so many errors on our booking that together with recent posts here made question her recommendation to book Silhouette.

Folks, please stop worrying about being booked on the Silhouette. We sailed on her transatlantic last month, 15 wonderful days. She is a stunningly beautiful ship, the staff and crew were great, and the food was wonderful. The issue with the azipod now is affecting her top speed; they will fix that in the dry dock. Do a little search and I think you'll find that these issues with the azipods are common to this propulsion system (and not just on Celebrity ships).

Have a great cruise! We'd sail again on the Silhouette without hesitation.

  • 3 weeks later...

Four in my family sailed on the Silhouette Dec. 14-21, Western Caribbean Cruise and had a wonderful time. Our age range was from 51 to 86 and we had A2 cabins in Aqua Class.

The Silhouette is a beautiful ship and the friendliness of the staff was the best I've encountered on a cruise. Our sail was very smooth. The ship could maneuver seemingly without any problems, but was sailing a little bit slower than normal which cut into the shore excursion time slightly. There were a lot of activities on board including the Art Studio, the Canyon Ranch Spa, dancing lessons, cooking demos, bingo, the casino, talks about how the ship runs, movies, Sangria and tapas on the lawn with music, etc... Hey, this wasn't a cruise to Rome or Venice; our group didn't miss having less shore excursion time.

My recommendation (for a woman or man) is that you sign-up for a reflexology massage as soon as you get on board and then get yourself a Chi-Chi somewhere that you can view the beautiful ocean water. It will help you reduce the usual 2-3 day transition from a stressful job to a relaxing vacation.

We had the Classic (alcohol) beverage package. Almost everything we wanted was covered...bottled water, cokes, Bloody Mary's, cappuccino with a shot of Baileys....EXCEPT for a selection of Chardonnays. The standard house Chardonnay was Benziger (acceptable), but none others fit into the Classic Beverage restrictions. You can, of course, buy a bottle at a discount.

If you're a real oenophile and consume a lot of wine, I recommend that you get the Premium beverage package.

The problem with the ships speed will no doubt be fixed but there was nothing else wrong at all with this cruise that I could see. I would not hesitate to book on the Silhouette again, the sooner the better!
