Next time I'll use my Canon T4i again along with a 11-16 mm f2.8 for time lapse, 50 mm f1.8 for low light MDR situations, maybe a 24-105 mm f4 for daylight lido deck situations and perhaps I'll pack either my 85 mm 1.8 or my 135 mm f2.8 for evening lido situations. I love it but my DW...not so much.

I have my trusty Nikon D40 DSLR that goes with me on any vacation. It has a very nice hand-feel for me - a little smaller than most DSLRs. Most of the time, I just take my 18-200mm lens - it's a great all-purpose travel lens. I do have several others that I'll bring if I think I'll need them (like my really long lens for a safari). I put it in my cross-body bag and go. Now, I don't bother to bring it with me when I'm around the ship - never seen anything worth taking a shot with that camera… I do have my iPad Mini with me all the time, so if something pops up, I'll use it to take a shot. I have been known to use it in restaurants to shoot some "food porn" for my friends!

If I had the extra discretionary money, I'd like to spring for one of the new 4/3 cameras - I've seen some extraordinary photos out of them!!

  • 4 weeks later...

Any good compact cameras that have good zoom and take clear pictures that would be good for our cruise? I've looked up some of them mentioned on here they all seem a bit heavier to carry around. We currently have the Canon SD1100 IS. The size is good as I can put it in a purse or a pouch around my waste, but over the years, it's gotten such a delay in actually taking the picture and they are not coming out very clear anymore. We do have a our really good camera but its too big to bring with us.

I have a Nikon D5200 and my wife purchased it specifically for me to take on our Trans-Atlantic back in 2013. I really like it a lot, I got to use it during the solar eclipse that week, we were at sea that day, and got a few good pictures!

Thanks for the responses.

So do you all carry the camera around with you for the most part? Or only take it with you when 'touring the ship' or exploring the ship? I would be worried about taking it when say, going to the pool and then leaving it on the beach chair.

We usually take mine around the ship, to dinner or on a excursion we've never been too, otherwise we will use our phones for any other last minute quick shots!

And I agree with the earlier post DO NOT leave it lying without someone close by, but I'm really shocked the guy lost his camera in the laundry room. I have left stuff there before and came back to still find it sitting there. I guess someone needed a camera pretty bad.

Have fun shooting!

Something like the Canon 50HS is great but a bit large for your purse the SX700HS is possibly purseable with a 30X zoom.

I use a Canon G16 and a GoPro. The GoPro is great for snorkeling, zip lining, hot air balloons (Cappadocia) and so much more. Now I won't take a trip without it.

I use similar but a G1X instead of the G16 and a 5Diii as my SLR a near unbeatable trio.

You should check out the black rapid You have no weight at all on the neck. I highly recommend it.

I really like my Black Rapid strap. No weight around the neck and my camera feels more secure by my hip.

I wish they'd had black rapids back in the days I carted around a TLR for pro work maybe wouldn't have so much neck pain today.

My wife is the "shutterbug" in our family. I bought her a point and shoot a few years ago and then I bought her a Nikon SLR bundle that came with two lens.

Since then, she bought a Tamron 18-270 lens that she uses most of the time as her "walk about" lens. She never travels without them. I can see the progress she has made when I compare her older pictures and the new ones she took last year on our Island Princess cruise. Her big challenge on that cruise was the Folkloric Dancers in Cartegena, Columbia.

Now she is looking forward to our Alaska cruise next year. She says Alaska is a photographer's paradise. :D

You can get "Black Rapid" style straps on ebay for less than $5 shipped.

You would probably have to wait 4 weeks but it may be worth a try before dropping $40+ for a strap.
