Canadian cruisers!!

Recommended Posts

Thank you all once again for this very helpful thread. The one HUGE thing that I find VERY frustrating with RCCL is the consistency of their agents on the phone. I called today to add an additional 500.00 to the amounts I had already purchased and lo and behold she cannot perform anything over 499.00 without a faxed copy. I had read this previously on this thread so I was aware of this information. However she can clearly also see that I have added amounts higher than 500.00 two prior times on my account with no prior issue.

Consistency in customer service is key...and they sure are demonstrating that they are not consistent.

Thank you to everyone who has posted especially the originator of this post.

We got off our BTB on Sat and both weeks we went to guest services the last night and we were refunded the unused amount in US cash.

That's good news - another confirmation.

Did you by chance try to take out some cash mid-cruise?

No we didn't as we had already purchased the premium drink package so it was used for our gratuities and a few purchases in the shops.

Did guest services charge you a 5% service fee or did you get all the money back.

If you go to the Casino and get a cash advance they charge you 5%.

How far in advance should I purchase OBC (especially at these rates?)

Would you buy OBC now for a cruise in Nov? Or do you think I should wait?

Looking for anyone's opinion / thoughts.

It's not possible to predict what will happen to exchange rates.

Given that the CAD is around 1.30 right now, I think it may take a long time to get down to $1.10 hence I would buy the OBC now.

We purchase 10 x $300 which will cover us for cruises from now until sometime in 2018. If the CAD improves before then we will simply cancel our OBCs and the funds in CAD dollars will return to our credit card.

In the interim RCL could adjust the exchange rate higher and the opportunity would be gone.

I don't ever purchase OBC but at the rate RCI is charging now, we purchased some for our cruise next February. We are planning on purchasing a beverage package once on board and as of the rates today at a CND bank, we will save $80 each on a beverage package by purchasing the OBC now. I wouldn't take the chance that these rates will be available closer to sailing (or next week for that matter).

I just went on to my booking and saw that the beverage packages which are listed in CAD have gone up about $10 each. I wonder if the US price went up and that is why the Canadian price is up? Or is the Canadian price up because of our dollar?

Does anyone know?

Wondering this too. We don't cruise until April 2016 so it seems early.

I felt the same way as I don't cruise until next Feb, but I figured I would be mad at myself if I missed the opportunity, so i bought $500.

Good to know that your cruise is far away but yet bought OBC now. That is a pretty good deal :)

You said you purchase 10 X $300 for future cruises. Do you have 10 future cruises booked or are you able to buy the obc with no booked cruise to attach it to? And then when you book, apply it to that cruise? Sounds like a good idea.

I agree with the posters buying for future cruises, we bought $300 (and pre-paid tips) for our October TA.

By the way, we're leaving for Florida in a few hours and sailing the Allure tomorrow with our pre-paid tips and $1300 obc. Thanks for the tip to whoever started this thread, put a lot of extra spending money in a lot of peoples pockets.

I think royal have upped their drink prices across the board---$10 plus tip for cocktails? We wont be drinking much at those prices, even with the 1.10 exchange rate.

Rise in prices are due to the Cdn dollar. You are better off buying the obc at 10% and purchasing the beverage package onboard

That's what I was thinking which is why I hadn't bought any packages. I did find a site with the US beverage package prices and they have not gone up so the CAD price increase has to be due to exchange rate. I would not be surprised to see their exchange rate on everything go up very soon.

Anyone who hasn't purchased OBC at 10% should do it, no matter how far ahead their cruise is.

Ok, question - I bought $350 obc for CDN $385. My receipt says nothing about 350 dollars. All it says is that I paid 385 dollars. How do we know that at the time of the cruise they won't reprice at the current exchange rate? I have no proof that I purchased US $350. That is to say, how do we know they won't say that CDN$385 is now worth US$300 for example?

Also, do we know for sure that this obc is cashable at the end of the cruise if any is left over? It is not "use it or lose it"?
