I was wondering what everyone's opinion was towards a high ticket item like a Movado watch? On my up coming cruise I was think of getting DH a watch. Any idea of the price tags on board? Is it worth the savings? Is there a good selection? Thanks for your input[emoji267]

From our experience the ships have a pretty good selection of Movado and the prices in our opinion are very good compared to land! My DH bought himself one on a previous cruise and has never had problems with it! It's duty free and cheaper than land I would say go for it! [emoji2]

Personally....for a High Ticket item I prefer to shop locally...if there is a problem I won't have to deal with the hassle of trying to get it taken care of...

IMHO, it depends.

 

And very worth spending a little to get some interent access- as you can check land prices.

 

We took a chance on a Hamilton watch, and it paid off-the ship price was slightly less than what I could have gotten at the time. So add a good price to the memory of getting the watch on a ship= win.

 

Selection- no idea how to judge that. If they have 2 watches, one of which is the perfect one for you- great. If they have 100, and you don't like any- terrible. They have *some*.

 

 

All in all, it's a good idea to do some research before going- get an idea of the watch you want and the price you are willing to pay.

 

(to me, $50 over retail is worth the celebration of the trip- but that's just me)

I would check your prices before purchasing on the ship. For the Fossil brand, I could get them for less on Amazon.

I agree check your prices before you go. Do your research. If it was only a minor savings i would just buy it when your home, incase you need any repairs of warranty work done. But if its a big savings i would go for it

Getting anything of value on the ship, or in a port is always a risk and many times, you don't really save much. Remember, the ship only sells those items for their profit, not yours.

DW was looking at a watch for me at one of the shops on our last Celebrity cruise. Clerk said watch's MSRP was like $1,200 but ship price was like $350. I find such pricing ridiculous and told DW iI would be happier with an $15 Casio from Walmart.

Before my last cruise I went and priced various watches so I would know if I was getting a good deal or not. I priced them with our NC sales tax included. I purchased two watches one was an Invicta purchased on the ship which I got a very good price during their sale and I purchased a Michael Kors watch in Cozumel which I got a better price for the same watch which they had in the Michael Kors store on the ship! :cool:

Couldn't have summed it up better. Do your research. Obviously the ship selection will be limited. Maybe a good deal and maybe not.

 

Regarding "Invictas" - they are an odd brand often overpriced "retail". Be careful of purchasing them anywhere. Just my opinion.

I bought a TAG Carrera Automatic Chronograph on the Navigator at a very good price, and it was tax free! I had the internet package so I checked a few online sites and emailed a friend who called two local store and the ship had the best deal.

 

I ended up having to pay duty on it when I came back into port, but it was only $15 or so (couldn't believe it was that cheap!) and I was able cut to the front of the customs line since I had to be escorted to a customs officer.

 

The watch came with the stamped international warranty card and I double checked the serial number on the watch with the serial number on the warranty card just in case.

 

It was fun buying the watch on the ship because it adds to the story of the timepiece.

My husband has bought several watches over the years on board . They often have updated styles not available yet.

He did have a problem with one of his ( Tagg) he saved the original box and receipt and mailed in for repair with no problem.

Best example he bought a Tissot had problems I think the stem broke. I don't remember Again in original box he sent it back for repairs. The watch was 2 years old, ended up sending him a brand new updated model without us even asking.

We usually cruise every other year and when I think back he always seem to buy a watch.

Last year was my treat. He bought me a beautiful tag. Yes it was alittle saving but again it was a brand new style we had not seen yet.

Again if you find it cheaper on the island they will usually price match. And if it's expensive like mine was they even gave us a bottle of champagne to boot.

You specifically mentioned watches, but I consider Cameras high ticket. I've found ship board prices to be as high or sometimes higher. I did buy a camera in port and got a good deal once, but that was researched ahead of time. I imagine people may buy more cameras on impulse if their old one finally does give up. That said, I did buy a watch once, but it was far from high ticket item as I paid about $100 bucks for it. My band broke on my digital watch and I decided I wanted an analog watch before I lost the ability to tell time that way. :D

I also want to say. They usually have a watch sale one evening. No you won't find the higher end watches there. You need to go in the shop on the ship to find that and yes they will usually price match

And I'll add make sure they actually scan the watch! They told me the Tag I wanted was 20% off and I said, "no thanks." Because I thought it was too high. Went in the next night--after a few glasses of wine :eek:--to look at the watch again and I said to a different salesperson, "I love that watch, but at 20% off it's just too high." She said, "I think we are running a better sale than 20% off." She scanned it and it was somewhere around 38% off! I was worried it was a mistake so I said, "I'll take it!" I'm sure the wine had nothing to do with it! :D

Wow thanks everyone. I could buy it at home I'm sure but thought it would be fun and memorable to purchase it on board. DH doesn't buy himself much in the way of jewelry it's kinda a birthday and anniversary combo gift thanks for your inputs and thiughts[emoji267]

We too bought two Panasonic underwater cameras. Great price and included a lot of extras. We were very happy about our purchases and the cameras worked out great!

Same thing happened to us on Serenade last year. Unfortunately, we didn't buy but should have....because....just before Christmas my DH's Tag needed a new battery. Left it with our jeweler to replace the battery (which also required a pressure test since it's a dive watch). When I picked it up, the battery had been replaced but I was told it failed the pressure test. Yes, they could send for repair but not sure it could be and didn't know the cost. So, I asked to see a comparable Tag (thinking good Christmas present). The comparable watch she showed me was $4,200. Ummm, flashback to that watch on the cruise. So, now his current watch isn't keeping time. We will be on the Serenade in 4 weeks...guess where one of our stops will be?!?!?! Just hope we can find a good deal and then go back for a better deal, lol.:D
