Just off the Quantum

Sailed the Quantum of the Seas from 3/13 to 3/21. To summarize, the cruise was very good not to say there were a few minor glitches. To list the few problems we had: The RCCL App that I added to my phone said you could check the status of luggage. When I checked it said no luggage found. Needless to say this was wrong, thankfully. The selection of TV stations was horrible. No American news station only a foreign CNN. No free movies except TCM . If you wanted a movie it would cost $12. No regular programing, mostly channels selling RCCL. This was the worst TV selection that I have found on 22 cruises. No note paper in the cabin. Problem with breakfast service in the American Icon Grill, other meals were fine there. All in all the problems were really minor. Other cruise lines provide a deck plan in the cabin, RCCL does not. Finally found one at Guest Services after asking.

Now for the good: The ship is beautiful and well laid out, after a day of orientation I could find my way around pretty well. Dynamic Dining although criticized by some was well handled and provided for a varied dining experience, I for one liked it. The food was about as good if not better than I have had on other cruise lines, such as Celebrity, Princess and Holland American. The steak house Chops, had food as good as a NY Steak House and the Grande was a good choice for a complementary restaurant. The other free and specialty restaurants also had very good food and service. The crew was always very cheerful and did their jobs with enthusiasm. I had the best cabin attendant I have ever had. Her name is Rowena Silang and she was just a pleasure, kept our cabin spotless, responded to all my requests quickly and did this always with a smile and a cheerful comment. The entertainment was excellent. Mamma Mia was truly a Broadway quality production and ran over 2 hours . The singer was very good as was Starwater and Sonic Odyssey. Of course there was a fairly large casino with pleasant dealers.

Our cabin was midship on the bump out near the elevators. It was very well appointed with an adequate bathroom and large rounded shower with a glass door and rainhead showerhead. The balcony was extra large, being an S1 cabin, and had 2 reclining chairs with foot stools and a very small table. Internet was much faster than previous cruises and was reasonably priced.

There were many unique options available North Star a boom with a gondola that flies over the ship, on deck movies, Sea Plex, a large area for bumper cars, roller skating and basketball. You could also climb a rock wall or simulate skydiving with RipCord.

The Captain and his Officers were very visible about the ship and the Captain gave two presentations about ship navigation and general ship operation. Very well done.

All in all I was very happy with the Quantum and would most likely consider sailing her or her sister ship the Anthem again.

Thank you for your review!

It sounds like you had a cabin similar to mine on my upcoming cruise. Did you have good internet speed inside your cabin or on your balcony?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, can't answer you as I used the ships computer which were Apple's.

For anyone who's been on QOS, were there other activities scheduled in SeaPlex besides skating and bumper cars? How was the Dance Hall? Any other notable live entertainment?

They also had Circus school where they trained people on the trapeze.

We were on Deck 9 on the same cruise, Internet worked everywhere and fast! The Two70 very impressive! The decor is very chic and modern. The officers, including the Captain were very visible. The Bionic Bar was something not to be missed!

No movies? That sucks :(

Lots of other things to do obviously, but sometimes after a long day it's nice to relax and watch a movie in your room!

To watch movies we stay home and not pay $$$ .

Was on the same cruise, sounds like we were neighbors (Rowena left when we docked at Port Canaveral, the new attendant was horrible).

Also in seaplex was the typical basketball, volleyball, soccer fare and dance parties. Second floor had foosball, air hockey, ping pong and Xbox. Spent a lot of time in the Music Hall (karaoke, bingo, pool tables, dancing).

We came back with Norovirus unfortunately.

We were on Quantum in January and we agree that the TV channels are poor. I read somewhere that Royal is playing with a service that could carry a large number of channels -- for a fee.

Has anyone heard of this?

Thanks

On the 2/20 sail they did the Quest in the sea plex.

And the music hall had a lot of stuff going on in the day. Bingo, art auction, seminars. Music at night.

Bumper Cars, Skating, Circus School, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer - was there anything going on for those passengers of an older and less mobile age.

Doesn't sound as of there was much.

Royal Caribbean are going for the younger generation, which I think they might come to regret in the future.

Why? They need to start attracting a younger audience as the older ones become less mobile and start "dying off" (sadly a fact of life). There are plenty of younger professionals with or without children who have lots of disposable income to spend on a cruise.

There are plenty of other ships within the fleet offering a more traditional experience for those that want it. The quantum class won't be for everyone but will be perfect for a lot of people.

Not to offend you but the Quantum class is focused on the "younger" (don't usually think of 40 as young) generation of cruisers. IMO that's why there were so many negative reviews of her, She is a new animal for Royal and some people don't like that. Its not for the calm cruiser but for the family that wants daytime activities to keep them busy and active. Less crafts and talks more skydiving and surfing.

Q is for people who don't mind reservations and new restaurants and waiters' every night. For some people tablemates and waiters matter if they do Q is not for you.

Its all about supply and demand as long as they can fill these floating amusement parks they will build them. For me and my family its great for my parents not to much.

Unless there are 2 Rowenas. We were in 13234, SGS on the hump. On embarkation day she said she was supposed to not work our sailing but her backup never came so she would be sailing with us and getting off at Port Canaveral. The new man who came on was awful.

We caught something too. Sore Throats and Coughing and nose Running.

Wish they would do a better job in the Windjammer cleaning tables. Tables always felt sticky. To many of the crew either standing around or following each other not knowing what their job is.

Jimbo:)

Thanks for relating this. I would have suspected a little better on a newer ship with newer technology. You did mention this in the minor category and I appreciate the spirit in which you mentioned it. I normally don't watch TV on a cruise, but it happens. I was on Allure when Osama was killed. On Majesty one might I was tired and resting in the cabin while my wife went to a dance party. I thought what was really a poor job by RC was the programming selling their product was so outdated. I watched a show about a family taking a 7 day Mexican Rivera cruise out of LA on Mariner. Really made me want to take a cruise that hasn't been offered in 5 years! ;) I was kind of hoping on my Freedom cruise if I get too much sun I might see some new material about Quantum or Harmony.

I see under the Quantum boards someone has just posted there is Noro currently on the ship. From the amount of vomiting and stomach cramps I knew that is what we had.

Either there were 2 Rowena's or she worked very hard and fast as we were on Deck 9.
