Canadians - Current Exchange Rate?

Recommended Posts

Can the gift cards be bought in Canadian funds? When I called and asked they told me no. If I was given erroneous information that would in fact be great.

If your NCL account is in CAD (if you booked the cruise in CAD then it will be) just buy OBC through NCL account in denominations of $100USD. Go to the casino and cash it out for a 3% charge.

Thanks for that. The poster earlier said that specifically about gift cards and that is what I was interested in. More specifically if you book and pay in Canadian can you then purchase the gift cards with the OBC or can you purchase the gift cards prior to the cruise and be charged in Canadian funds? Gift cards which then can be given to someone else as a 'gift'?

Well if you go to this link it says Gift Cards can only be purchased in USD and ONLY Shipped to USA addresses.

https://www.formstack.com/forms/ncl-giftcard

""You can order and ship up to 5 different cards using this form. Gift cards can only be purchased with US dollars and shipped in the United States to your address or the recipient's address. ""

So I guess since your Canadian you can't get gift cards.

But in your NCL account you can buy OBC in $50/75/100USD amounts for any person in your room in advance online. Charged in CAD currency (IF YOU ORIGINALLY BOOKED YOUR CRUISE IN CAD) at whatever CAD rate your NCL account is fixed at. Then you could go to the casino, cash it out for a 3% charge and give the money to whoever. If your on the same cruise as them.

So if your rate is fixed at 1.11 it would cost you $1111CAD for $1000 USD OBC. Go to casino withdrawal for 3% fee end up with $970 USD

I guess your options are to do that if on same cruise and if not give them cash and tell them to buy their own obc?

jb456,

Yes I was aware of that and it was what I was told by the representative when I called to inquire. I will assume that the information or question in the post I originally quoted is either incorrect or impossible. Thanks again for your input.

Whenever I am given an answer I don't like, I always call again and politely repeat my question to a second rep. Chances are good that the second person will be more accommodating or simply more experienced.

Just curious if any Canucks have booked directly with NCL lately for 2016 cruises and what their exchange rate is? With the dollar being horrific, I'm just curious as to what NCL is now offering.

This week, I had the misfortune of NCL mistakenly cancelling my reservation. When my TA phoned to correct this, all they did was rebook. I now have a exchange rate of 1.19 instead of my original 1.11.

I booked a few months ago for a sept 2016 cruise. It was 1.19 i think.

the exchange rate they give you also depends upon the type of room you book.

I booked a studio, so according to the rep I spoke to, you can probably get a better rate than that for a better room category.

I don't doubt that a rep told you that but I can't see how that would even be possible to do. It would take some pretty interesting computer programming to set that up. What would happen if you were booking multiple rooms? How would that affect subsequent purchases. Would booking a higher class cabin get you a better rate for purchasing an UBP or a SDP? Would those higher cabins also receive a more favorable rate when paying their gratuities? Not only does it seem grossly unfair of a potential practice but also a logistical nightmare. No wonder folks around Cruise Critic say you can't trust what a rep tells you.

I would fight that, considering the mistake was their fault. If they do not have the flexibility to adjust the rate, at least they could give you freebies to compensate for THEIR error.

UPDATE

Just off the boat. Bought a couple grand OBC in advance online. Went to casino cashier asked for $970 . They would first call downstairs to confirm OBC and then give the cash. You sign a paper showing the amount of cash and 3% fee total $999.10. Did this each day once casino opened.

Dont believe they allow you to do multiple transactions one after another for that high of an amount. We just did one transaction each night.

I agree with this. The fellow who I booked with last week, quoted me this rate, and I thought nothing of it, till I read this thread here today, and see others got a different rate than I, even booking a week ago like I did, that is why I called again this morning to question, and that is what today's rep said.

I wont question the echange rate/quote I was given last week anymore, because I am quite happy with that price, and to be given a break on the exchange rate at all is a plus for me. I have been cruising with Carnival, and they dont give me that break.

But true; you can call and ask a question several times and get a different answer every time.

Just do a mock booking on aircanada vacation's site and you can get a rough estimate.

There was a March 2016 rate of 1.06

Was considering the 10-day Gem out of NYC for December. Great rates, and exchange but everything else was expensive :(. We're going to Cuba instead.

A local TA is again offering the same package they had last year for the Norwegian Breakaway from New York. It includes return chartered bus and pre-cruise hotel from Montreal. Last year a balcony was under $1200 CDN . This year the exact same package is $1700 !:(

Hi Sharon.

Hi Rich!

Hope all is well! Wow, big increase. We'll spend a week at a pretty good AI in Cuba, for around 3K, for 3 people. Airfare, drinks, of course, included :). We spent a week in Cozumel this summer, as opposed to taking a cruise. Saved about $800. For the 4 of us.

It's getting to be that cruising isn't the value it once was (for us). Between our weak dollar and airfare, I'm being pretty choosy. We have the Vista Repo books for next year, but beyond that, it's just too pricey once everything is factored in.

Cayo Coco :). Looks great!

We went to Cayo Coco last February rather than a cruise. There were eight of us so the saving was HUGE! With the dollar still tanking we will probably be going back to Cuba again later this year.

Great beaches and scuba in Cayo Coco. Have a great time. And remember to bring some Bubba Mugs.:D
