Canadians - Current Exchange Rate?

Recommended Posts

Just to report back

I booked my December 2015 Escape cruise through a cruise ship centre back in Jan 2015 (11 months in advance). I did not note the f/x rate I paid at the time. Then in August in contacted the TA and asked at what rate I could buy cruise credit. Was told I could buy at par. Sounded too good to be true but I bought $3000. I was able to cash out at casino cage during my cruise. I paid the 3% fee using my non refundable credit. Worked out to be my best deal ever considering I just converted some money yesterday at a cost 1.4220 with RBC.

One day I drew more then $1,000 so the casino had to call for approval, other then that no questions were every asked.

Never done this before so I'm a bit nervous, but considering buying 1000$ of OBC at 1,11$ rate to have some money to do island excursion and cashing everything on the second day of the cruise.

As I read here, many have done it with no problems, let's hope it's gonna be the same for me!!!!;)

Can anyone confirm the rate for purchasing OBC with NCL? We have some with RCCL bought at 10% but they have now jacked up the rate to 40%.

I replied to your posting on the RCI board, but thought I would also re-post here. I bought obc on Tuesday at 1.11 but it does seem to vary depending on the what the prevailing rate was when your cruise was booked, based on what some others have reported. You would have to log into your booking with NCL to see what they are offering it to you for.

Hope that helps!

Ok, so I bought 1200$ US of OBC this morning for 1333,32$ CAN, let's see in the next few days if I will have a call telling me that 1000$ US is the maximum we can buy!!!!!!!;)

Hi Frenchsnowhite!

Please do report back and let us know if they did cap you at $1000 usd max obc. If they allow you more, I will buy more. I don't see the point in tying up my money today for almost a year only to have it returned to me pre-cruise. We will be sailing in December with our two sons so anticipate having to spend more onboard than when we cruise just hubby and I.

Thanks!

Jill

Thanks for responding. Other people here seem to be saying that the rate differs for the OBC depending on when you booked the cruise. If that is true, it is very different from how RCCL did it where you got it at 10 cents on the dollar regardless of when you booked.

When did you originally book your cruise? My niece is thinking of booking one this weekend setting sail a month from now and I was wondering what rate she would get if she purchased OBC through NCL.

I had also heard that NCL offers rates in Canadian funds if you call them directly. Can someone confirm if this is true. RCCL does this and offers a better exchange rate than the credit card companies or the US travel agents would offer. Just trying to find out the best deal for my niece.

I had also heard that NCL offers rates in Canadian funds if you call them directly. Can someone confirm if this is true. They do and the figures above are only available to people who have paid their deposit and final payment in CAD.

From all I have read on several threads, the exchange rate for pre-purchased OBC depends upon the rate at which you booked the cruise, however, the exchange rate for the cruise seems to differ depending upon which cruise you are taking. I have read on CC one person has 3 cruises booked, seemed to have booked all 3 around the same time but for different dates and itineraries, and each of the 3 has a different rate. This could have been due to the TA having blocks of cabins held at those rates, not sure.

Yes, if you call them directly they will invoice you in CDN and everything you purchase for thar cruise will be at that rate. I was given a 1.25 rate last week when I upgraded.

You can get the cruise in CDN funds by phoning NCL or contacting any Canadian Travel Agent. (maybe Canadian TA web sites too?)

In my experience calling direct to NCL, they only gave me CDN price because I asked for it, although at the time I think the NCL agent did not realize I was in Canada

When I called NCL, the agent did not know the exchange rate, just the price in US and the price in CDN, so make sure you have a calculator handy so you can work it out for yourself.;)

Newbie, Boarding Getaway next Sunday, I wanted to purchase OBC, can that be done online or I have to call NCL if I wanted to purchase about $1000 USD? Has anyone bought lately? How much was the exchange?

Login to "MyNCL"

Pick your cruise

"Gifts & More"

"Onboard Credits"

and go from there.

The rate will be the same as you paid in CAD on your booking. If you paid for your booking in USD it will be in USD NOT CAD>

Thank you. That means that 1USD is 1.33CDN for mine then. Am I buying an on board credit certificate then? They are at 100$ OB credit certificates. Thank you

Just print out a copy of your receipt which will show how may $100 certificates you bought. When I log in after purchasing some OBC, it shows that $100 OBC was purchased, but doesn't tell me how many.

I agree and I would also suggest that you get a copy of your Amenity Invoice. Call NCL and ask for it.

If you look under : Vacation summary

You'll see OBC: look at Quantity it should show you how much you bought!

On mine it's says 12, exactly what I bought this week!;)

Mine also shows the quantity on the page, but when you try to print in, the number of certificates gets removed.

This is weird.... I printed my order summary when I bought the OBC and it's show 12 .

Under vacation summary that is printed, it's show 600$ under my name and 600$ under my husband's name for a total of 1200$...

This thread has been crazily informative but I have another question ....

NCL has provided me with $300 in non-refundable obc. If I buy an additional $1000 and I don't cash out in the casino (or they remove the option) ....if I spend in various locales, what gets deducted first:

the refundable obc or the nonrefundable obc?
