Good to know. I still have the bug spray from our South Pacific portion of our vacation with me so I will be sure to take it ashore with us.

Turn the can upside down when you're spraying it, or your South Pacific insect repellent won't work in the northern hemisphere. ;)

Hi Roger,

It is great to see that you're having a great time! We are doing the 18 June sailing on NA and in cabin 4166. If at all possible without being an inconvenience if you can get photos of the room and balcony that'd be great. Totally understand if not possible as I may be a little late.

Loving your posts and pictures and appreciate all you do!!

I cannot get 4166 because it is now occupied but I do have VB4064 which should be identical. No specific balcony pictures but you can get a glimpse of it.

Give me a few weeks to convert pictures from RAW format to JPGs and post them.

Hi, will be goin the middle of June, so would there be anything to see, such as salmon, eagles & etc? Thanks.

Virginia

We saw many bald eagles today and you will be happy to know that our guide in Juneau said the river and inlet will be chock full of salmon from early to mid June and that will keep the Eagles there for months too.

I understand that the Nieuw Amsterdam has a retractable roof. What happens on the Alaska cruise? Is the roof closed so people can enjoy the pool or is the pool not used for Alaska cruises?

Thank you for all the information you have shared.

The roof is generally closed during inclement weather, in the evening, or through the day when it conditions warrant. On my last voyage to Alaska on the Zuiderdam, it was only open when we were in port. If the weather is gorgeous however, I'm sure they would have it open.

Welcome to CC.

The indoor pool is open every day and the roof has been open three times since we have been onboard with lots of passengers taking advantage of it. One day was an outdoor salmon bake last week.

Hey Crew News, haven't heard from you today!! Everything aok?

Virginia

I am still aboard but there is another thread doing a daily report. One of my recent post stated that I would be answering questions and just giving opinions so that the other thread can report their point of view. When I return from eating my two lobster tails tonight, I will do a catch-up post for those following this thread.

With the exception of a few minor items, my website is current with everything updated for this cruise and some new added items.

Evidently Brigantine Restaurant will be replacing Anthony's is a new building. Brigantine is good but I will miss seeing Anthony's there- have been going there since I was a kid.

There are many in the area who wish Anthony's would stay in some capacity. Since the Brig is planning to include their Mexican restaurant Miguel's in the same project, it would be GREAT if the Brig would opt to have Anthony's keep their fishette café service instead. Another Mexican restaurant is not needed and Anthony's could remain as the local tradition that it has become.

Fingers crossed !

Just an update for our second week on the Nieuw Amsterdam follows.

My second week in Juneau was another whale watching excursion that flirted with rain and spotted only a few whales. Magical whale tail pictures were not to had but some very active sea lions playing king of the hill on a buoy were a treat. I stepped off the excursion bus in downtown Juneau to make my annual soap purchase from the cabin of Glacier Silt Soap. When I asked about the owner, who I missed the last two years, I learned that he passed away last October. His wife is determined to keep the small business going with some help from Utah University students during the summer. I had a long conversation with his wife about how much I had missed her husband’s smile an willing conversation.

The day ended with a Tamarind dinner with the Dobiemom/legalslave delegation.

Skagway was a Photography Tour that replaced my grounded Glacier Walk. The three-hour tour made a few stops on the road into the Yukon. A short walk through the snow and rocks just past the border to photograph the guides favorite tree was a true test of our endurance. The constant 30 mph winds and temperatures in the teens chilled all of the nine tour members to the bone. Returning to ship, I had the chance to do more ship interior photographs as well as a photo tour of the Promenade Deck. Dinner at the Pinnacle Grill was compliments of my Explor4 promotion from the previous week,

Glacier Bay today was sunny with blue skies but only a few calving events to photograph. Upon leaving Glacier Bay, the Casino opened and I made a strong effort to make a profit before cashing out. Tomorrow is a new day and will try my luck again.

Dinner in the MDR shocked my waiters, Hernan and Rezo, who thought that I had abandoned them after sitting at my table only four times in 15 days. I finished my two lobster tail meal in less than one hour which is directly attributed to my two efficient waiters. Each of my waiters received one of my 2016 Nieuw Amsterdam calendars.

Hey Crew News, are baked potatoes generally available at dinner in the MDR or are the a special request (time to cook them). I looked at the menus on your site but don't recall seeing them listed. Thought I read on a thread somewhere that they were available. Thanks.

There are no channels on the TV but rather just menus like a computer. The forward and rear cams are under that menu along with NSNBC, CNBC, Fox, ESPN 1 & 2, and special programming. There is also a movie menu as well.

I have a bookmark at home for all of the dockings for the above ports but you might get a faster answer on the Alaska Forum, I will look for you after I return from Le Cirque Night in a few hours.
