Boytjie Posted May 23, 2016 #51 Share Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) Absolutely agree with you. It is not even correct Dutch, NieuwE Statendam would be right spelling wise, but that would mean New Statendam.Nieuw Amsterdam of course is different ( and correct) , it being the full and complete name of town in the province of Drenthe and of course the former name of NYC. Isn't it 'Nieuw-Amsterdam' in Drenthe? Nieuwe Statendam does not quite roll off the tongue as easily as Nieuw Statendam does. SC_GAY_Cruiser Posted May 23, 2016 #52 Share Posted May 23, 2016 Wouldn't an "under the sea" design be bad form for a cruise ship? Just think about that for a moment I'm still waiting for the Lusitania 2 and the Poseidon Adventure 3 to be the film under the stars.........

Sir PMP Posted May 23, 2016 #54 Share Posted May 23, 2016 Let's not forget those gorgeous glass panels that separated the two sides of the forward staircase. They depicted the heavens at the top of the ship, and worked their way down through the atmosphere, all the way to the depths of the sea at the lower decks. That was a design the likes of which we will never see again. :( Didn't the Ritz Carlton have a nautical wall?

Topsham Posted May 23, 2016 #56 Share Posted May 23, 2016 (edited) s.s. ROTTERDAM Ritz Carlton with the mural of the Agean Sea. Note all of the small fish sit in brass and glass into the railings. Club Room... with one of the four tapestries. Glass panel in the stairwell at the upper decks. The lower decks are sea and fish and the higher levels are the sky and birds. Oceaan Bar, At the far end.. 'sea creatures'. the long bar represents a whale... note the curved shape. The light fixture above... a whales eye. Not the deckhead... scalloped shapes... represent fish scales. The ROTTERDAM is more fishy than you can think! The whole ship is a piece of art... not just bits and pieces. Just as legitimate as Eurodam and Oosterdam as ship names. :)
RuthC Posted May 24, 2016 #64 Share Posted May 24, 2016 Was the Ritz Carlton a ship?! The Ritz Carlton was a nightclub on Rotterdam V. There was a bandstand, copper dance floor, lots of plush seating, a grand staircase leading up to a second level, which overlooked the lower level. It was beautifully decorated, down to the most minute detail. Just a lovely place to dance the night away, or hold a private party.

RuthC Posted May 24, 2016 #66 Share Posted May 24, 2016 Why not have her be the next Statendam and ditch the Nieuw? Is it marketing? I have to wonder if it is a deliberate attempt to note a change in HAL's direction. Even a slight change in name is a statement that things are no longer the same. You know that if they hadn't added the Nieuw, people would be calling it the "new Statendam" for several years anyway. However, I would have preferred something like Grand Statendam rather than Nieuw. Edited May 24, 2016 by jtl513

Topsham Posted May 24, 2016 #71 Share Posted May 24, 2016 Why does it need any prefix for the ship's name? Like CARNIVAL XXXXXXX ... or CELEBRITY XXXXXX or COSTA XXXXXXX or NORWEGIAN XXXXXXX. The HAL names are quite fine the way they are. Leave them along. The first time your toilet breaks you won't be too happy anything "NIEUW'! NIEUW AMSTERDAM is just fine. There is a reason for that name. STATENDAM is a perfect name.... one of the best in the fleet!
Vic The Parrot Posted May 25, 2016 #72 Share Posted May 25, 2016 If I were to sail on that ship, I would just call her STATENDAM. And if a crew member or officer tried to correct me, I will still refuse to use that silly prefix. So if they have a problem with that, they can go complain to Ashford. Himself Posted May 25, 2016 #73 Share Posted May 25, 2016 With the Nieuw Statendam joining the fleet, down the road we could have a new BUILD called STATENDAM VI. Currently we have the AMSTERDAM and the NIEUW AMTERDAM
