Review: Easy to purchase online, easily verified at lobby bar.

I felt like I had to get my money's worth so I hustled to get there. I changed it up to Patron and didn't wait on the pool waiter choosing to instead get my own drinks and tip the bartender for each one another $1 in "additional gratuity". The lack of bartenders was just ridiculous in the Havana Bar and the pool bars with expection of serenity bar which was never packed really but not open very long. The casino bar was sometimes just one bartender and could get packed. The Casino waiters weren't great ..some were good, one was terrible. The Sports bar was NEVER packed and the bartender was ready and waiting. We never made it to the ALchemy bar or Red Frog Pub. The coffee/shake place was awesome service and awesome drinks.

I won't be buying this again just due to the hustling needed to "get my money worth". I would instead bring my own allowed wine, take the free bottle first night at Cucina del capitano, pay for drinks and likely order one bottle from bon voyage for the room. I'm glad I tried this but ultimately its just not that great and the onboard drink prices aren't that steep.

Thanks for posting this. I am still torn as to what to do about Cheers. Your day 1 sounds about how I drink almost exactly. I don't know if it's a value or not. I do enjoy drinks at the Alchemy bar, which are a bit higher. I'll keep thinking. I have until August. This post was very helpful. To me anyway.

Thanks for this report! I have Cheers on my cruise on Sunshine next week, so this is a very timely post for this. Where did you find the $20 per glass champagne?

Champagne was only at Steakhouse ...there is a bar inside to the left where I think you could drink without buying the Steakhouse meal but I'm not sure.

To be honest I drank more than I normally would for that many consecutive days and that ran into trouble.

Another note: eating far too much at the steakhouse and mixing large glasses of champagne in means for me at least terrible stomach pains and all the money spent went down the toilet ...by way of my face about an hour later.

On our previous cruise we bought two bottles from Bon Voyage and made drinks in cups we walked around with and were perfectly happy with that. We will do that again next time around ... and just buy a drink here or there. If you choose a good room location its faster than the bartender at the pool anyways !!

I figure if we had done that we'd have spent around $175 on bon voyage including soda and water ...and then maybe another $100 on drinks elsewhere. So would have spent about half as much and would have had a better "buzz" when we really wanted it and felt no pressure to drink when we didn't.

Thanks for sharing...both the original post and the last one:eek: ITMI on that one?:D)

It's good to see comparisons for cheers versus paygo. But as you seem to imply, perhaps purchasing Cheers "encourages" one to step out of the normal cruise drinking pattern, just to sense getting money's worth, even if some gets flushed out to sea. I've always thought Cheers made economical sense if both cabin mates do drink, have a past tendency to run larger bar tabs and there are at least 3 sea days.

 What a waste! I do know what you mean about too much food at the SH. Glad you got to enjoy for a little while.

Exactly ... if both drink and really drink consistently and heavily. This whole "if you drink 5 or 6 a day its worth it" isn't true unless you are drinking 5 or 6 high end drinks and that's every single day. Personally I wanted a little push to get out of the cabin more and its fun for me to try different drinks and things. That being said I did it, and don't need to again unless I go with a big group of friends who all drink and know we'll be hitting the bars at night instead of the casino (drink service in casino is slow).

The "pay-as-you" drink prices are not too bad, depending on what you get. The specialty cocktails on the various menus often contain two or more pours, so they become a really good deal. When we ordered a single pour drink, we were usually asked if we wanted an additional shot for only $3. I also think the 16oz SA Rebel IPA (6.5%) is a pretty good deal (and a good beer).

I know I want to do the first time cruiser thing - I'm getting a couple souvenir cups with drinks for sure. Other than that it will be mostly a couple beers a day (if that much) and I'm still considering buying a bottle from the fun shops and bringing mixers. I'll probably take advantage of the bottle of wine per person although neither of us drinks much wine. Champagne for mimosas sounds nice though.

If you buy bottles onboard, is it the same options as what you can get in advance through the funshops?

as far as I can tell, online fun shops bottles are 80 to 100 and more dollars but you can drink them during the cruise (ostensibly in your room but who's gonna be checking what I got in my sippy cup?)

Bottles you buy from the duty free shop are cheap (duty free) but you don't get them until debarkation day.

I do not know if you can order drinking bottles while on-board (maybe through room service?)

Pretty sure you cannot buy bottles to consume during the cruise during the cruise :) Meaning you must buy through bon voyage for full bottles (excluding bottles of wine) that you will consume during your cruise. The bottles you buy from fun shops on board are stored until end of cruise and those prices are soooooo much cheaper.

Of course we saw several people in nassau hitting the liquor store so I assume they smuggled on but I've never done that and can't really speak to it.

You can definitely buy bottles through room service to consume onboard. And I'm thinking about going that route versus Cheers. It's quite a bit more than the same bottle you buy duty free that you get on the morning of debarkation. I was just wondering if it's the same bottle and mixer packages as offered online.

that's what I thought I read - but if you buy during the cruise are they subject to the tip surcharge? I was under the impression if I order online before my cruise there's no surcharge but if I order while on cruise they charge the gratuity - which makes an incentive to order before I go. If I get charged either way I will probably wait and see how thirsty I get lol. I can easily live on beer but the wife might want a tequila sunrise or something. And naturally, if I gotta make her one anyway, I'm making me 2 too. I mean 1 2. I mean 12. I'm makring twleve terqiila surbnishezises.

OP, great post. It looks like day 4 was your tequila recovery day. Glad you got back on pace day 6. It was easy for us to reach our $50 a day. We had a Bloody Mary every morning, top shelf, about $10. We would have 2-3 beers on the deck in the afternoon. We would also have a martini or two before dinner or with dinner. The martinis were Belvedere at $9.95 for an excellent pour. We would drink a very nice Beefcake Cabernet with dinner, which was also $9.95. Easy peasy

Not related to Cheers, but as an FYI - on my recent cruise there was a deal to buy 3 bottles of wine to have with dinner for $60. Mine was a 4 night cruise so on a longer cruise the deal may be different. We didn't find out about the deal until out second dinner buying our second bottle of wine, so didn't take advantage of it :(.

Yes had to recover ...the tequila day was all before noon prior to a catamaran and snorkel excursion in Nassau .... little mistake on my part, queasy for that ride but once in the water it was all good. I pretty much can't stomach that level of drinking multiple days like I used to be able to do.

And just a "heads up", mimosas don't have to be orange juice and champagne. Every ship we have been on has guava juice at the buffet, breakfast time. I have a large tervis type cup that I fill with it. I bring champagne to mix with it. Sometimes things just taste better on vacation than at home. I have bought the guava juice at home and have never liked it. But, LOVE it on the cruise. It is also good mixed with rum. And probably any other liquor. :) Enjoy your cruise!
