t shirts and jeans. You WILL see this, along with a wide range of attire. Sorry but your "show" hopefully is not separate? (just linked because going direct from one to the other? no one dresses up for "shows")

We just returned on Celebrity. A bit of everything on formal nights, but not many suits/ties or gowns. Sports coat w/open collar was more than sufficient for the men, and pants with a dressy top was good for women. There were a few more dressed, and some less.

That was pretty much my experience as well. Definitely NO t-shirts, but some wore jeans on the first and last nights.

Our experience is that these night are always more casual - especially first night. 2nd night on most itineraries is usually after a sea day so becomes a Captains Welcome formal night - with formal taking on lots of meanings. Many dress up because of the availability of photographers.

Unless you plan on spending time in the evenings on an outside deck, the ship will be a comfortable temperature. I always carry a sweater or shawl because as any cruise, the ships seem cooler in some public rooms for me..day or night.

Hi can someone please advise as to what to take for the evening for an August Alaskan cruise, summer wear or winter? How cold does it get in the evening?

thank you

If you're male, long sleeve shirts will be fine. If you're female, a shawl or light sweater will help. It really isn't cold inside the ship.

I understand Alaska is less formal than other cruises, but what do most women wear in the MDR and the shows. Regular nights and formal nights (if they still call it that). We are on Royal Caribbean at the end of August.

Sailed Radiance July 1

Attire was all over the map.

Not only were jeans accepted EVERY night (that's what we wore - including the 2 formals), a fellow seated near me (full on adult) one night was wearing shorts at dinner.

Enjoy the freedom.

Oh, as far as shows go, there's no such thing as a code at all.

I was on NCL Pearl May 5-15 Alaska. Being that NCL is "freestyle" there wasn't really any FORMAL nights. Generally everyone wore pretty much what was comfortable - men had on a variety of Polo-type shirts, button-down shirts, etc - most wore jeans or shorts of some sort (me being in the shorts group). Only one evening at dinner was I told "no shorts please" and it was at the French (Le Bistro) restaurant - I simply went and changed only my shorts to jeans... Ladies wore...what ladies wear... There was one fellow in particular who, throughout the cruise, wore a suit of some sort and one evening I saw him wearing a black tuxedo. He was the only one. The first time I saw him I thought he was one of the upper ranking crew members of some sort until I got to talking to him at the bar. He was traveling alone and a bit eccentric. He stood out, definitely. I wouldn't worry too much about what to wear though your cruise line might handle things differently.

(reply to EM, post #8) I agree. It's a lot easier to pack a little cocktail dress than slacks and tops. And on formal nights, I think it's just not nice to wear jeans. But for me it's the same at home. When you're at a nice restaurant and people are wearing jeans and golf shirts, I just wonder why they wear the same thing out that they'd wear to the grocery store. But that's how I was raised.

Anyway, did you observe that people dressed down more on the Alaska cruises?

And are the clothes still "summer" even though it's not hot? I mean my husband could bring nice linen slacks, not wool. Go with the weather or the season?

Thanks!

  • 4 weeks later...

My observation was that even though some evening outfits might be lightweight (not strictly winter attire), there were not the Caribbean/Hawaiian shirts or dresses that are worn on other cruises. I am more likely to wear dresses with sleeves. DH wears a sportcoat, and a tux on gala nights. Many, but not all, passengers did the same.

I was on Oasis of the Seas in the Caribbean in November 2015 and the HAL Volendam in Alaska in May 2016, so once on your cruise line and also recently in your destination. On non formal/elegant/chic nights, I wore slacks and a silky blouse. Some nights I may have worn a shell and cardigan instead. On the "formal" nights I wore black slacks and a black lace blouse. Both times I had packed a cocktail dress but felt I looked better in the slacks and blouse.

Enjoy your trip!

My husband I both think it is cool on the ship in the evenings. We have only been on Caribbean cruises so I was thinking we may as well do long sleeves and not have to add sweaters or light jackets. I guess if we get warm, we can always take a walk outside to cool off! lol

I was just wondering since the weather may be cool and damp in Alaska in September if the inside of the ship is kept a little warmer than on Caribbean cruises?

I always find on European winter cruises the ship is really warm. Summer tropical cruise the ship is too cold and I have to wear a cardigan indoors. At least though you can go outdoors to warm up. I'm assuming, on an Alaskan cruise it would be warm indoors to keep us warm, at least I hope so as we won't be able to go outside to get warm.

Some cruise lines request that passengers respect the evening's dress code in all public areas of the ship (excluding pool) during the evening....therefore, show, etc. It might not be enforced beyond MDR, but the expectation is there.

Personally, I can't imagine going back to my cabin to change yet again, when I still have show/dancing/casino/music ahead of me.
