Info on caribbean isands

Can anybody help me with Zika info regarding stops in Domenican Republic, Aruba, Curacao and Turks and Cacios. Anybody just back from the islands! Considering taking elderly parents on a cruise to these islands and wondering if you saw any mosquitos during the day on these particular islands. Thanks so much for any info you can provide!

More important than if anyone recently visiting these ports saw any mosquitoes would be that there is documented transmission of zika local to these areas so that you can make an informed decision whether or not to travel there, and, if you choose to do so, to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites while there.

Personally I would not worry about it if your parents are in generally good health. Make sure you take bug spray. If they have a compromised immune system, then go but stay on the ship. JMHO

Birth defects are not the only symptoms of Zika, if they even are. Of course, other symptoms are usually uncommon and many people will never know they had Zika. Though some can have similar symptoms of the flu. Not something I would want to catch if I can avoid it.

I've never been bitten by or even seen a mosquito while in the Caribbean. It may be because us travelers tend to remain by the breezy shore and not go inland where mosquitos may be present.

 

As a precaution, we took a plastic spray container of Deepwoods Off with us on our last cruise but never took it out of the beach bag.

You are generally there during daytime hours...mosquitos are active at dusk and dawn...unless you are planning some sort of jungle trek...you should be fine. If you're worried, use a DEET product..that's very effective against mosquitos.

Elderly people are on any cruise. If you wait for an all clear sign, you'll never go.

Zika is the new "it" disease in the Caribbean. A few years ago it was Chikungunya, before that H1N1, etc. Mosquito-born diseases are present all over the Caribbean basin at all times during the year. Like others have said: take precautions, be aware and have fun. Use DEET-based repellent and reapply after you go in the water or if you sweat too much. Beaches and daylight are not friends with mosquitoes.

I believe the word you wanted was 'complication', not symptom. The symptoms of Zika are flu like ones. Birth defects, Guillain-Barre syndrome and others are the rare complications of the disease.

You are correct, my point was that the issue isn't just birth defects. People with compromised immune systems should also take protective measures as well as just about anyone else. I wouldn't base my decision on which islands to go to on Zika, just take precautions regardless of the ones you choose.

We have non-travel related cases here in the U.S. now. I want to say Miami, but maybe a different town/county. Just use a bug spray with DEET as a precaution and keep them away from excursion in the jungle areas of the Caribbean. I'm elderly and I'm going on a cruise in December and another one in June...both to Caribbean islands. My daughter's Mother-in-law is going also. We don't intend to let Zika get in the way of going on another cruise. I'm sure your parents would feel the same way.
