Smoking on balconies

The casinos I don't care so much about, as I feel I don't pay "extra" for that space as I do my balcony.

Yes, agreed, your balcony space is yours... Until such time as Royal just gives a warning on first offense and only charges $250 for second offense, it will continue.

Make it hurt the first time, $1000 and second off the ship, no refunds.

  • 1 year later...

I am just checking on this subject way before we sail. I am a smoker, so I need to see how this is addressed. I have several months to try to quit *crosses fingers and toes that I can"! I would not want to ever be a bother to my neighbors on a cruise. Goal is to quit, plan b option is to just go where smoking is allowed on the ship. I don't think I would be one to turn someone in for smelling it, but then again, if I can't then neither should they...lol..(jk). I'm cool with the rules.

Thanks for being so respectful! And let me assure you, we non-smokers don't just make a big fuss, to us, it really is absolutely disgusting. I know smokers never understand this, because they also smell it differently. My sister and I had this ongoing struggle/discussion with our mother...

Anyway, maybe having fewer option to smake will make quitting easier for you - I wish you all the best of luck with that! You will NEVER regret it!!

I think possibly the reason people say they would report someone smoking on a balcony is because it would be a direct violation of the cruise line's stated policy that is in place not just for the comfort and health of others nearby, but for fire safety reasons as well.

As a non smoker, I too appreciate your position regarding others regarding your smoking.

For those of you that frequently book balconies, how often have you run across smoking neighbors? Is it pretty uncommon? It would be such a bummer to pay for a balcony and have to put up with smoke.

I've had it happen a couple of times. Not often.

Not often. If I smell smoke I turn them in

YES. This. It's a safety issue above and beyond the fact that it's disgusting and disrespectful to make others breath in your poison. Disclaimer: They never said what caused the fire when I was onboard the Grandeur incident, but I can't help but wonder. Regardless of what started it - the fire was incredibly damaging and could have been much much worse. I wouldn't hesitate to turn someone in - repeatedly - or escalate the issue if the staff couldn't get them to stop.

I sincerely hope you can quit for yourself. Good Luck:D:D

We had a smoker next to us last cruise. She was extremely polite. She asked if it would bother us if she smoke. When I said yeah, she was ok. I did tell her if we are not on the balcony I had no problem.

Now I never even thought of the fire hazard. I wouldn't turn anyone in, just not that way. I think next time I will politely remind of the safety issue. In all our cruises this was the only smoker we encountered.

Casinos we don't do. However on our last cruise our seating for MDR was right near the casino entrance. We asked to be moved & they obliged putting us on the upper MDR.

Jeez folks...this is really a non-issue. The wind blows it away, so YOU aren't breathing it. Live and let live. I can't imagine spending my vacation time trying to "catch" someone doing something they aren't supposed to. Waste of MY time!~

I disagree 100% that it's a non-issue. We had a balcony cabin with a chain-smoking neighbor who never seemed to go anywhere and was on the balcony any time we were on ours. Sure, the wind might blow the smoke away (or right at us), and when docked, there is not always wind so there's plenty of smoke, but when the wind blows, so do the ashes..... and some cigarette butts, and some of the food that blew off the plates he would put on the balcony floor.

I have nothing to add, but want to up my post count.

Actually since Royal went smoke free on the balconies, I've had no problems. Once on Allure we were enjoying the famous deck 12 aft before it became a suite. A guy would come back there and smoke frequently and throw them overboard. On the second day I pointed out the camera that was watching him. didn't see him again.

On Adventure last spring, I did smell a cigar once, but couldn't tell where it was coming from. Later at dinner, our table mate admitted to being the culprit.

Under the old rules, I didn't have a lot of problems. I use my balcony a lot. If someone nearby was smoking, I would come back in a few minutes. I never had one of those groups that used their balcony as a smoking lounge for hours at a time.

I agree, safety is first and foremost. Throwing butts into the sea is disgusting to me as well. Not to mention, say you are on the 11th deck on the balcony and you try to throw a ciggy overboard, what keeps that from blowing right back into the ship somewhere? I can see why they made the rules as it is a safety issue on many levels (no pun int.)

We didn't do balconies when it was allowed. We do now specifically because it isn't allowed.

I'll turn someone in without batting an eyelash. Smoke. BOOM! Call it in.

So far we've been fortunate not to have someone smoke on their balcony near us. At least we've never smelt the stench. And believe me we would notice it. No way in hell would I ask the inconsiderate offender not to smoke or advise them why they shouldn't be smoking on their balcony. The cruise line already did that. Like you we'd rat them out in a New York minute.

I wouldn’t interact with the offenders either. I would report the offenders to guest relations.

I haven't smelled smoke on any balcony I've been on. It probably wouldn't bother me if I did unless it was coming in door. Which we are not supposed to leave open anyway but I like to listen to the ocean.

I also enjoy an occasional cigar from time to time. I had half a cigar left on my last night and asked my room steward if I could finish it on the balcony. She just said "I didn't see anything" so I enjoyed it out on the balcony for the first and last time. I'll smoke in designated areas if I have an urge for a stogie. Although, stogies are not allowed in the casino and other places.

I think the Royal Crown lounge has a cigar and whiskey area around 10pm on some ships. Not sure which.

I am a rule follower! But I'm also a smoker (I know how gross right?) I've never had an issue on NCL finding an authorized place to smoke, but on RCCL, there are so few options. If you're on deck 8 having a drink, you have to go all the way up to deck 15 or all the way down to the casino. I think if they had more authorized smoking spots, people would be less tempted to smoke on their balconies. But I guess we should be incovinenced because we're such horrible people for smoking. :halo:

Unfortunately you’re incorrect, the smoke stays against the ship and gets pulled into any nearby cabins with an open veranda door. We had a chain cigarette and pot smoker next to us and got chased back into our cabin throughout the cruise. I chose not to complain but I won’t hesitate next time, it’s inconsiderate and rude to offend other passengers like this.

As one who smokes, I try to respect others while smoking. The rules were put in place by RC and should be followed. Smokers and Vapers need to realize that non-users can and will smell it in the air. People get balcony cabins for a reason...to enjoy it. I don't blame you one bit for calling that in.

I even know what it feels like to smell someone elses smoke in the air if I have quit for a few days, and it is awful. I remember I had a mother-in-law who used to come over to our house first thing a.m., and would light up a cigarette. The smell of that cigarette in the fresh air was pure stench. I sooo need to quit. Started Chantix two days ago.

I'm rooting for you. I know my brother has been a smoker for 2 decades and he just can't shake them.

I work with 3 former *super long-time* smokers. All had smoked for more than 30 years and 2 of them used Chantix. All 3 of them have been free since around 2010 or 11 and haven't gone back.

Agree. Good luck with your choice. I smoked for 26 years and quit cold turkey 27 years ago. I haven't wanted a cigarette since. I never smoked in our house, air plane, restaurant, the work place (when that was ok) or in my vehicles. Always outside. I guess I was ahead of the game so to speak.;)
