DD = Darling/Dear Daughter

HAL = Holland America cruise line (owned by Carnival Corp)

John - John Heald, senior cruise director/spokesperson for Carnival (he's hilarious...check out his FB page and Blogs)

What are all the acronyms for? DH, DD, HAL? I

guess being new to cruising has it's own lingo?

Who is exact is John and why does he have so much pull in the cruise world?

it is like dazed & confused:

Dear Husband (DH), Dear Daughter (DD), etc.

Some knucklehead made those up years ago and they stuck. LOL

HAL = Holland America Line - A brand owned by Carnnival

John Heald is the Senior Cruise Director / Brand Ambassador for Carnival and is quite popular on Facebook where he posts all kinds of things. (including items that originate here on Cruise Critic) He is a huge interface between cruisers and corporate. (or as he calls them: the beards)

Hey Carl (NightOne),

This might be crazy ---but when I lived in Memphis in the late 80's and early 90's, I had a friend named Holly. We used to hang out with a guy named Carl. Wouldn't that make for a smaller world?

Same here, I don't know all these abbreviations either but I did learn soon enough that John Heald is much like the mythical Keyser Söze.

TA is travel agent but what is PVP? :o

Is this specific lingo to Carnival?

How do I know whether my person is a PVP or a TA?

A PVP is a Personal Vacation Planner and they work for Carnival. They're kind of a travel agent only for one cruise line, if that makes any sense. They're kind of handy to have, will take care of all kinds of booking/pricing/accommodation issues for you.

I think it could also be DotD, if we get super technical about it :D

And that's the beauty of acronyms. They mean different things to different people.

While you probably were referencing the Drink of the Day, my reply to the Sir who worked in the Defense industry was regarding the Department of Defense. The DoD.

FOD, even spelled out I don't know what that means.

FOD = Friends of Dorothy

It's a social gathering onboard for what used to be called the gay or alternative lifestyle cruisers.

(I don't know the current terminology for these folks, so please don't crush me if I'm saying it incorrectly.) :)
